11 movies to check out on Netflix in August 2023
Liam Neeson in Non-Stop, Emilia Clarke in Terminator: Genisys, and the long-awaited sequel to 1994's The River Wild highlight Netflix's August offerings

Now that you’ve adjusted to Netflix’s new pricing plans and added your out-of-household members, it’s time to check out what the streamer will be adding to its library during the last full month of summer. River Wild, a direct-to-video stand-alone sequel to 1994's The River Wild, promises whitewater-rafting thrills. If you enjoyed Emilia Clarke on Secret Invasion, check her out as the iconic Sarah Connor in the underappreciated Terminator: Genisys. Other new additions this August include Liam Neeson in the high-altitude thriller Non-Stop, a new Adam Sandler comedy titled You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, the Bruce Willis action-thriller Trauma Center, and the intense documentary Tiger 24. Rawr!

every one of these movies sounds horrible.
At least the title makes no suggestion that these movies are “the best” on Netflix, or even “good”.
Paddington is wonderful.
There are good movies on this list, but there’s some real stinkers as well.
And then there’s also the self-Asyluming of River Wild which… exists.
It’s not like…it’s not like The River Wild was a great movie that was done poorly and deserved a do over, nor was it so grand and fantastic that a it would be a worthy boost – in the modern, fucked-up psychology of rebootitis we’re afflicted with – to whoever redid it.It’s such an odd choice.
Terminator Genisys is on the stinker list for sure

I cannot believe you’re suggesting we watch a geezer teezer.
The problem with Genisys is that it was way too complicated for the movie it was, and not nearly smart enough to be the movie it wanted to be.
And in the long tradition of Terminator sequels managed to blow the big twist in the trailer
Wait did they blow a big twist in other Terminator trailers? Genisys is the only one I remember doing it.
Famously the whole idea that Arnold was the good guy in T2 was blown by marketing before the movie came out. Cameron has said as much and if you watch T2 it’s clearly designed to not reveal he’s there to protect John until the shootout in the service hall of the mall. The fact that between Terminator and T2, Arnold had become the number one action star in the world didn’t help either. Outside of Batman and Robin I don’t think he’s played a villain since Terminator.
Doesn’t he play a sort of asshole version of his charcter (Quaid) in Total Recall? I remember that off-putting scene on Mars when he runs into his old female compatriot.
The even bigger problem was that it was a very bad film that was very miscast.
I love seeing Emilia Clarke be awesome though. Even if the movie was bad.

this description of River Wild make me sad that A Perfect Getaway is not currently streaming anywhere
Now THAT’S a great movie and it deserved to be a bigger hit.
This version of River Wild is just so awful. I couldn’t stand it after about 20 minutes shut it off. Good god what a stinker

I think most of us can agree that any list that includes Terminator: Genysis… Genysys? Gennyssis? oh gives a fuck… is not a list that we should spend time with. So what is this then? An io9 editor checking off one of the twelve pieces of “content” they’re paid to deliver each week? A paid ad for Netflix? What?It’s a pity that Emilia Clarke has basically become Hollywood shorthand for “the script was so bad that no other actresses would take it”. Loved her in Game of Thrones, it’s a pity that her presence now just immediately flags a movie as something to avoid.

I just listened to Taran Killam wax lyrical about how great the original The River Wild is on Scott Hasn’t Seen. I’m positive he didn’t even mention being in this remake/sequel! Which is probably not a good sign.
