The 2022 Grammys are under way in Las Vegas, and this year’s event features plenty of interesting races. Thanks to last year’s controversy over The Weeknd being completely shut out of the nominations, the Recording Academy rolled out a bunch of changes to the rules, making the whole thing more democratic (and transparent) than in previous years.

Adding to the night’s energy is that fact that many of the mainstream pop albums released over the past year were, you know, actually good. The A.V. Club’s music editor has broken down the nominees for many of the top races, including the biggest categories—Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist—with our predictions for who’s going to win. And, since we also have our own preferences, we’ve included who we think should win, likelihood be damned.

It should be noted, we have a proud tradition of being extremely bad at predicting the winners of these awards shows. So if you’re relying on us for your office betting pool, maybe take these selections with a grain of salt, is all we’re saying. Okay! Let’s make some damn guesses!

The best rock album category is so not-current that one of the nominees has been dead for almost 5 years.

Imagine being excited about the Grammys. Like it’s not your job to cover them you are just genuinely excited to sit down and watch the Grammys from start to finish. Absolute freak behavior.

Stop yucking other people’s yum. People can like what they like. It’s not hurting anyone else.

Quit “yucking my yum” by not allowing me to think that people that watch award shows by themselves are psychos. Sorry but it’s only acceptable to watch award shows at a party and even then if it is party for anything other than the Oscars or Tonys than that’s weird too. Like imagine going to an Emmy party or one for the People’s Choice Awards how weird is that?

The only person I know who gets super excited for the Grammys each year works as a publicist for a major label, so she’s at the ceremony cheering on the artists she represents when they win something.I don’t give a shit about the Grammys, but it is fun looking at her social media posts on awards night.

Anyone that doesn’t get punched while presenting an award is a Winner. Anyone that punches someone who is presenting is a Loser.

Of course, SOUR is “all-killer-no-filler”! It’s just stolen bits from the best pop-rock albums of the last 20 years.

  • bloggymcblogblog-av says:

Other than that one time Jethro Tull beat Metallica for best metal album, how many times do people remember who won a Grammy a day or two after they happened? Even the show itself downplays the actual awards for performances.

What’s so great about Olivia Rodrigo? In my humble opinion, her stuff is average, at best.

  • schmilco-av says:

How about they change the “rock” category to “classic rock” and change “alternative” to “rock”?

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

How about they change it to just “The Rock” category and Dwayne Johnson wins it every year?

    • wombat23-av says:

i was kind of wondering if alternative really existed anymore. It seemed like a 90’s thing for grunge and some mopey british guys and people who stayed up way too late on sudnay nights for 120 minutes. , but these days rock is pretty much alternative, so just fold them in.

Keep Dexys Midnight Runners name out your f*cking mouth!

My God, the Grammy nominated musicians are all children. Getting older sucks

  • naturalstatereb-av says:

Sylvan Esso might be the pick here, but you wouldn’t know it by the video posted.  Nothing about that says dance or electronic.  What an odd choice to feature.

How is another big awards show the very next week a good idea? At least give us a break of an extra couple of weeks, entertainment industry!

  • satanscheerleaders-av says:

The winner, obviously, will be whoever slaps the most nominees. All award shows will morph into pro wrestling, but the kind of wrestling you’d see on local public access. All participants will adopt and develop schtick and accompanying storylines. Folding chairs and tables will be the weapons of choice. The Iron Sheik, the actual Iron Sheik, will participate. All culture will become a clown show. Mr. T will win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

    • alexmclevy-av says:

The actual Iron Sheik participating would be the best move any awards show could possibly make.

Posting BTS’s picture for clickbait when they’re not even mentioned in the post?

  • jimbis-av says:

The winner as always should be, “who gives a crap?” Popular = easily digestible, lowest common denominator garbage has become the ultimate truism.

  • elemeno82002-av says:

Just here to say that BTS better win. They’ve somehow only been nominated in one category again, and the grammys know (hopefully) that they f*cked up last year by not giving them the award. A huge part of the viewing audience will be their fans tuning in to see them perform (and win).

    People still watch this?

    Jon Batiste.

“Driver’s License” is so bland. Don’t quite understand the love for it in this article.
