Perhaps it shouldn’t be much of a surprise, especially after the smash success of Top Gun: Maverick, but 2023 is shaping up to be a franchise-heavy year for film. Evil Dead rises again after a 10-year hiatus, John Wick keeps fighting his way to a seat at the High Table, and Magic Mike is back for one last dance. And that’s not even getting into potential franchise-starters like Dungeons And Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But, if mega-budget movies based on existing IP aren’t your thing, there’s still Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s mega-budget capital-F Film based on a book. And hey, at least there’s no way he’ll be able to muffle the sound of an atomic bomb, right? … Right? Here’s our list of movies to look out for in 2023.

M3GAN - official trailer

Release Date: January 6 (in theaters)Starring: Violet McGraw, Allison Williams, Ronny ChiengDirector: Gerard JohnstoneOn paper, we like everything about this movie: Blumhouse, James Wan (producing), and a killer trailer. In , Williams plays Gemma, a roboticist who devises a hyper-real doll meant to love, support, and protect anyone it’s paired to. Gemma ends up caring for her young niece Cady (McGraw) and pairs M3GAN to her. What could possibly go wrong? The trailer promises chills, thrills, and touches of dark comedy. Try not to laugh when a bully flicks M3GAN’s nose, only for her to come to life and helpfully suggest, “You should probably run.” [Ian Spelling]

expect new installments until one finally kills the golden gooseThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released decades before Scream and has never had a sequel popular enough to get its own sequel. But they still made a (by all accounts lousy) sequel to the original last year.

I found it strange that Kittridge hadn’t been in any Mission: Impossible sequel up until now.

You should probably specify which Agatha Christie story A Haunting in Venice is based off of: Hallowe’en Party. Per wikipedia, it doesn’t take place in Venice but I guess they wanted to keep up the trend of exotic location names.

    • ruefulcountenance-av says:

I assumed they had made it a running joke that no IMF boss came back for the sequel, much in the way that for a while no two films had the same director.

    • lexw-av says:

I think Scream is more killable than Texas, because it’s more tied to the specific characters/actors in it. They’re already taking a risk losing Neve Campbell.

  • nilus-av says:

No one is actually excited about this Barbie movie right?

    • activetrollcano-av says:

There are a lot of sickos out there.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

It’s one of my most anticipated films.

      • nilus-av says:

Honest question, why?Nothing in Gerwig or Baumbach’s filmography point to being the right choices for this movie. It’s an official licensed movie which means that Mattel isn’t going to let them do anything remotely subversive. In what seems very representative of the Barbie brand you have to go 8 people down the cast list before you see a POC.  They are gonna want this to play internationally(even the homophobic counties) so any LGTBQ+ representation will be quick and easily cuttable for those markets.

        • charliemeadows69420-av says:

It’s a huge problem for a movie about a children’s toy if they don’t make it subversive.

        • amessagetorudy-av says:

I’m getting a live-action Scooby Doo vibe. A few minor two-level jokes (Ken’s lack of genitals?) but ultimately something you’d watch on a Saturday afternoon at home on HBO Max.

        • misstwosense-av says:

Please justify all the superhero movies you watched in 2022. Or how many James Bond movies you’ve sat through? Or Lego movies? I fucking like Barbie and Margot Robbie, ok? Damn. It’s not that complicated.

          • knappsterbot-av says:

Lmao it makes perfect sense if you’re not suffering from internet-induced brainrot, Gerwig is incredible and the main characters are likely the most fun possible casting. It’s like if the Lego Movie were more geared towards adults but still had the same talent behind it.

          • nilus-av says:

Please justify all the superhero movies you watched in 2022. I was drunk Or how many James Bond movies you’ve sat through? I was definitely drunkOr Lego movies? I was high

        • lexw-av says:

None of that seems particularly cogent criticism.Gerwig is the main reason people are interested, because she’s obviously not likely to make something generic and forgettable. All the criticism re: PoC/LGBTQ+ stuff applies to most studio movies, so I’m not really seeing that as particularly horrifying. You can be clever without being subversive. Sure it’s better to have both, but when’s the last time any mainstream movie was “subversive”? The 1990s sometime? That’s how I remember it. Shit if you’re clever enough, you can be subversive without the wrong people realizing.

        • activetrollcano-av says:

“even the homophobic counties”Yeah, why are they showing this in America?! With all those domestic terrorists going around and mass shooting the gay clubs… film producers should really restrict access and only show it in countries without any homophobia.

        • evanwaters-av says:

Little Women was just that damn good. I trust Gerwig implicitly.

        • mikereyes1985-av says:

Barf @ this whole comment XD

    • captain-splendid-av says:

If it was directed by some no-name studio hack, sure. But Gerwig’s involvement means it’s at least worth a look.

    • xpdnc-av says:

Excited? No. Interested to see what can be done with it? Yes. None of the people involved with this, in front of or behind the camera, need to do the movie, so I’m at interested to see what it is.

Probably more so than The Flash. Ezra Miller is a sociopath by any pronoun.

    • seattleted-av says:

Theater over New Years absolutely loved the trailer. To each their own fun.

    • pete-worst-av says:

I figure Greta Gerwig is only making it so that she and Noah Baumbach can get their next pretentious shitfest greenlit. Good god, ‘White Noise’ was terrible..

      • TotoGrenvitch-av says:

It was alright, but I get not liking that kinda nebbish movie that feels like a set-piece thing. I hate Chris Nolan films for similar reasons.

    • sohalt-av says:

I love the trailer. The little girls listlessly playing with baby dolls awestruck by the emergence of giant Barbie in a 2001 parody suggests to me that Gerwig gets it. The little girl with the glasses who tosses her baby doll looks a bit like me at that age. The movie has Ryan Gosling as Ken. I might have to go see it several times to see it with all the women who already told me that they want to see this with me.

      • nilus-av says:

I thought the trailer looked exactly like what a room full of studio execs and a trailer house could put together in an hour. I get it’s a teaser but they are showing very little of the actual movie. And I feel like 2001 parodies were already over done before the 70s were over. I realize I’m not the target demographic for this but I’m surprised there is a market at all.  I’m sure in July when it makes billions and it is amazing I’ll be eating my words but until then I’m skeptical

        • sohalt-av says:

Ha, I think trailers that show a lot of the actual movie are the worst! The fact that this trailer really doesn’t give away any plot whatsoever is what I like most about it. Clearly we have very different taste…. I also thought the 2001 parody was really inspired here, because it’s not just a parody for the sake of parody – it really does fit thematically. Barbie was that leap in the evolution of toys. The glamour! The Drama! the Inspiration for violence! No other doll did it before her!

        • TotoGrenvitch-av says:

You’re surprised there’s a demographic for a movie about like…one of the most popular toys to ever exist? That like almost every girl has had (and boys too), there’s elaborate fashion collections and lore for, that spans multiple generations. That’s the dazzling part to you…like the movies and video games were popular too…how though

    • frodo-batman-vader-av says:

      (Raises Hand)

    • TotoGrenvitch-av says:

Look there’s a serious deficit in like girl’s franchises getting adaptations, and usually when they are they’re so off the mark of what the appeal those series ever had for the girls in question who loved the series (Jem and Winx pop into my head off the cuff)This one gets the look and tongue and cheek humor the franchise has had with itself, sometimes it’s okay to just have a goofy old time. I’m looking forward to the neon bright costuming and plasticity. I’m also excited for the Beast Wars movie, because dumb childhood affection.

  • abouthesouffle-av says:

Anyone else remember when the AV Club also used to cover (in Scorsese-voice) cinema? Nothing wrong with a good blockbuster, but this list could have been made by any generic clickbait site…

  • jboogs-av says:

LOL Another Willy Wonka movie?? Why can’t we just let the one stand on it’s own. It’s not like there are people clamoring for a Willy Wonka expanded universe.

    • coatituesday-av says:

It’s not like there are people clamoring for a Willy Wonka expanded universe.

Not exactly clamoring, but I see a need for an Amistad-like courtroom drama that addresses the “employment” of the  Oompa Loompas.

Great Glass Elevator and its sensitive, nuanced depiction of Chinese people.

    • tsv1139-av says:

It’s tied into the Dune series. Paul, after taking the water of life, hallucinates an empire of Chocolate. The Emperor Shadam the IV of House Corino creates five golden tickets to select the next CEO of Wonka Chocolate (steward of Arakkis). The ruling families of the Landsraad each buy enough chocolate (a thinly veiled metaphor for spice) to simply buy their ticket to the contest, while one lowly orphan is gifted entry by mere chance. One by one the contestants are killed or besieged by their own vices of seeking power, riches, gluttony, or fame leaving the sole contestant the seemingly chosen orphan child who sees a true path forward for the business. As winner, Emperor Shadam the IV accuses the child of cheating and Paul fights Mike TV to the death, marries the Emperor’s daughter and ushers in the era of the golden ticket… I mean path.. A Golden path that will ensure the survival of Wonka Chocolate. The Oompa Loompas all wear still suits and do the sand walk when they are singing.

I’m so confused why Aquaman is still happening.

    • charliemeadows69420-av says:

It made a billion dollars idiot.

    • lexw-av says:

I can explain: 1.148 billion USD That’s why. It’s the most profitable DC movie ever made.I presume Gunn isn’t going to be rushing to reassembly the Justice League, and Jason Momoa is already recast as Lobo (which is practically a fan-cast it’s so on-the-nose), so I imagine DC are thinking “Let’s make a giant heap of money, and they we can let people forget”.I’m skeptical that the rumoured tie-in stuff will actually happen though, because it might be counter-productive at this point. Also, if Gunn is really in charge, I think he needs to stop them releasing the Flash movie, because not only is it starring a troubled person best described as an “outlaw” or “renegade”, but it seems to tie extremely heavily into a now-dead DCU, and a good Flash movie would be a great start to a new DCU.

    • mrfurious72-av says:

That would actually be interesting, and Disney has shown that they’re very opposed to doing anything interesting with their live-action remakes.

    • DonaldPatrickMynack-av says:

It’s just completely unneccesary…but that’s Disney for you.

    • TotoGrenvitch-av says:

Knock at the Cabin is a REALLY terrible name. Why not just give it the same name as the book it is based on?

    • jpfilmmaker-av says:

Too close to Cabin in the Woods, I expect.  But Tremblay (the author) isn’t thrilled with the name change either.

  • misstwosense-av says:

This is fucking DIRE. I have to imagine the actual gems will be found in less likely places, like streaming, because holy shit. This is just a depressingly awful lineup. Even for superhero bullshit it seems unusually bad. Like they’re scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel. This list is probably the most depressing one I’ve ever seen at a year’s start.(Imma see the Barbie movie though, y’all haters can suck it.)

    • DrLamb-av says:

Same thought. There is barely anything that even elicits any morbid curiosity.

    • pete-worst-av says:

      Lighten up, Francis..

    • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

I think it’s more popular on the internet to say that Barbie movie looks good rather than it looks like shite. I’m counting on Margot to make it fun, even though no one saw Amsterdam and I hated Babylon; she was great in the latter, and I’ll bet the reason the former didn’t work wasn’t her efforts.

    • markagrudzinski-av says:

Dire was exactly what I was going to say. I’m sick of superhero stuff, re-boots, and sequel after sequel after sequel. Oppenheimer appears to be the only movie made for adults.

    • TotoGrenvitch-av says:

Yeah, Megan was good. I’m probably gonna watch Barbie and Indiana Jones (I’m adventure movie starved, sue me!) but the rest aren’t great looking aside from Renfield.

  • knappsterbot-av says:

Old was good and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

    • ginsuvictim-av says:

I enjoyed Old, found it to be a lot of fun, but the performances were terrible.

    • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

Old was not good because M Night has apparently no idea how human characters talk to each other. The dialogue was excruciating. Also, someone needs to tell him to stop appearing in his own movies.

    • erakfishfishfish-av says:

I just saw Old for the first time the other day and that movie was fucking wild. It consistently vacillates between good Shyamalan and inept Shyamalan, but goddamn, I was thoroughly entertained either way.Given his recent output, I think Shyamalan is at his best when he leans into B-movie territory.

    • BeyonceIsTheLastUnicorn-av says:

      I agree.

I also liked The Happening though. And The Village.

(After Earth so was bad tho.)

  • brainbug-av says:

Luckily these lists has nothing to do with which movies actually turn out good or interesting. And this list in particularonly seem to have bothered to find out about blockbuster releases from major american studios anyway. There is not a single foreign language and almost no independent films on this list. None of the highest considered or interesting filmmakers in world cinema is represented (it’s hard to imagine none of them has a project in the pipe). But that is par for the course for these kind of lists, which is why they always seem far more depressing than the actual movie year turns out

  • rerecognitions-av says:

I mean, really, really bad list.

  • noturtles-av says:

No Infinity Pool? That’s certainly _my_ most anticipated movie of the first few months of 2023.

  • dibbl-av says:

No The Killer, Infinity Pool, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, Asteroid City, Beau is Afraid, The Bikeriders, Zone of Interest, Civil War, Ethan Coen’s solo debut, etc.? This is a piss poor list with way too much of a focus on fluff.

  • bozo4you-av says:

Well I’m not missing anything I see.
And can watch them on Netflix ect. When they hitonline. No big deal.

  • schwanstufer-av says:

Terrible list. Where is Ridley Scott’s Napoleon? Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers? Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon? Fincher’s The Killer? And I mean, Dungeons & Dragons? The only thing that will underperform worse is that sure-to-suck Haunted Mansion remake.
