Move over, Succession, you’ve had your time in the spotlight. It’s The Morning Show’s time to shine, at least at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards for television. The Apple TV+ series leads the pack with six nominations, including Best Actress in a Drama for leads Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and supporting nominations for Billy Crudup, Nicole Beharie, and Karen Pittman.

The Roy family over at HBO, meanwhile, got a respectable five, including nods for Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, and Matthew MacFadyen. Elsewhere, A Small Light, Abbott Elementary, Beef, Lessons In Chemistry, Loki, Reservation Dogs, and The Bear were recognized with four nominations each.

The 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler, will air on The CW on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 7 PM E.T. Nominees in the film category will be announced next week. You can see the full list of TV nominees below.

Good luck with that now that The Morning Show is known entirely as the show that convinced Juliana Margoles she has the authority to speak for the lesbian community.

    • necgray-av says:

Which is especially galling given that her temper tantrums forced the Good Wife writers to work around keeping her and Archie Panjabi, playing a bisexual woman, apart. Nevermind representation then, oh no! Girl was taking too much attention and audience affection from the Lead Actress.(I really like that show and the Kalinda character so it always annoys me when you can actually *notice* the season/storyline that resulted from Margulies feeling threatened.)

    • trevceratops-av says:

I think it’s mostly known as “that middling show with Jennifer Aniston”? I have no idea what the heck you’re talking about with Margulies, nor do I particularly care.

  • icehippo73-av says:

Are you kidding me?The Morning Show is a silly, occasionally amusing, badly over the top soap opera. It deserved pretty much nothing. Well, maybe something for Billy Crudup, since he should win all the awards all of the time.

    • skoc211-av says:

I’ve never watched and I don’t think I’ve ever heard from anyone out in the real world that they watch it, yet each awards season that rolls along it always gets a bunch of nominations. Is it just because it has an air of Prestige™ to it since it has big names attached and it looks like Apple has thrown a lot of money at it?

      • thundercatsridesagain-av says:

A combination of all of those things. The big names get attention, and Apple likely puts a significant amount of money into a “For Your Consideration” campaign.

      • taco-emoji-av says:

My suspicion is that it’s just a huge astroturf campaign by Apple. These awards are only occasionally merit-based.

    • thundercatsridesagain-av says:

At first I was indignant, but then I looked at the categories and realized that The Morning Show is going to win precisely zero of the awards they were nominated for (maybe one on the outside). That calmed me down. Best actress will go to Sarah Snook or Bella Ramsey, almost certainly. Best actor should be Matthew McFadyen. Anyone else would be a huge upset. Succession or The Last of Us are the odds on favorites in the drama category. The show’s best chance to pick up a single award will be in the supporting actress category, I think, which doesn’t have a runaway favorite this year imo.

  • icehippo73-av says:

And for f*ucks sake, The Bear isn’t a comedy. Please fix whatever stupid loophole keeps sending it to that category.

  • skoc211-av says:

Very happy to see nominations for Matt Bomer, Jonathan Bailey, and Fellow Travelers. They give fantastic performances and the series has been absolutely excellent!

  • uselessbeauty1987-av says:

Weird. I love The Morning Show, it’s always a hell of a lot of fun to watch but Succession is far and away a better piece of television and entertainment.
