Expectant fans have waited months for any news on the continuance of Amazon’s series adaptation of A League Of Their Own. After the first season aired in the fall of last year, there’s been little news on if the show would receive a second season renewal—until now. After months of negotiations, Amazon has offered showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson a four-episode second, and final, season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the delay in the renewal announcement was the result of Amazon’s renegotiations with Sony Pictures Television over the show’s licensing fee, as well as working out new deals with the actors due to the truncated season, which will be half the size of the first.

The first season of the show, based on the original 1992 Geena Davis film, delved deeper into issues surrounding gender, sexuality, and race. Broad City’s Jacobson stars in A League Of Their Own alongside D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field, Nick Offerman, and Kate Berlant. Prior to her death in 2018, Jacobson says film director Penny Marshall gave her blessing for the updated series.

Graham, who’s also working on fellow Amazon series Daisy Jones & The Six, shares a pointed statement about the truncated season offer.

“The one thing I’ll say at this moment: #ALeagueOfTheirOwn is not a small or niche show,” Graham writes on Twitter. “The audience is domestic, but our understanding is that it’s very big. It has outperformed many other shows that have been renewed. Journalists, please stop reinforcing the narrative that POC/Queer shows are inherently niche or small if you don’t have data. That narrative is racist and homophobic and all the other stuff. Please cover these things with some thought and care.”

This is disappointing, although I’m glad we’re getting something, at least. I thought the first season was great.

This show was interesting but a bit of a mess. I hope that it gets to wrap up on its own terms though. Abbi Jacobson was quite good in it

The audience is domesticWondering if that is the big reason. Baseball isn’t that big worldwide outside of a few countries, and they’re not getting international eyes.

I’m surprised Friday Night Lights didn’t do well in the ratings even in America considering how popular football is here.

I think it was kept around because critics liked it, but streaming is different from network tv and I don’t fully understand the incentives for either.

Oh yeah, 12 episodes should be more than enough to cover all of these incredibly important and timely subjects.

D’Arcy Carden’s character on this was sort of unlikable, but she is radiant & hilarious. I hate to say I might be sort of looking forward to this ending & her next project where she might get something more interesting to do than make out & bicker with Abbi Jacobson (not that that is inherently uninteresting)

While I’d like more, I would LOVE to see all of the streamers do this going forward rather than just cancelling shows outright. Complete the story, PLEASE. A movie, a miniseries, SOMETHING.

I will be grumpy about GLOW for the rest of my days.

GLOW S3 had the terrible luck of coming out just as COVID hit. If it weren’t for that, it would’ve gotten that final season as it was an award winning, critical darling. It’s hard to say if a show like that would get that far in this current streaming landscape where critical reception isn’t as important as growth and one-upping the competition.

      Preach.

I enjoyed the show because the characters are interesting. The actual plotting of the show was a chore, though.

As a gay white man in New Zealand, this show that tells the story about lesbian relationships and  point of view of a black lesbian woman is one of my favourite shows from last year and one of the reasons I recommended Prime Video as a streaming service to keep and not pirate.  The scene with the Tina and Ike Turner song, Raise your Hands, is one of my alltime favourite scenes ever

It’s funny he’s like “stop pushing a narrative without data”, then does the same thing…

That sucks, I really enjoyed the first season. Now Amazon is going to start Netflixing their shows too! Crap!

This show is so unique in its unabashed portrayal of fleshed out, complicated queer and Black (and some queer, Black) characters unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I love the first season and was desperately awaiting renewal news, and this feels like a disappointing outcome for a show that DID do numbers – in ratings, on many ‘best of’ lists, and even awards from GLAAD and HRC. It deserves a complete second season, at minimum, to continue or complete these stories. Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham are fabulous and also deserve more time for this beautiful work.
