Hollywood, especially in these IP-obsessed days, has a funny habit of moving forward with ideas before any of the obviously necessary pieces are in place. It’s like you announce that you’re going to make a car, but you don’t really know how or if or when you’ll be able to get wheels. Hollywood’s latest car is a new Jason Bourne movie, and the wheels this time are Bourne series star Matt Damon—who seems crucial to the whole concept, but apparently is not.

This comes from Deadline, which says that All Quiet On The Western Front director Edward Berger is reportedly in talks with Universal to take over a new Bourne movie. The project is only in “early development,” but the idea is for Berger to both direct and “oversee development” of the movie. That means there are no writers or Matt Damons attached, but Deadline’s sources say that Damon “would be first approached to return in the iconic role once a script is finished.” In other words, they’re going to bring in Berger, they’re going to find writers, they’re going to write a script, and then they’re going to ask Matt Damon if he’s interested.

What if he turns it down? All of this work and planning goes in the trash? We know they can’t just cast someone else to play a Jason Bourne-type character, that would be absurd. Of course, the real explanation for this is probably that it puts more pressure on Damon to accept whatever Universal wants to do if the studio has already put in this work, but Damon’s recent career suggests that he at least has a pretty good handle on the kinds of things he wants to do. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy they could trick into making a Bourne movie if he didn’t want to do it.

Anyway, if this does end up happening, here’s a reminder that already let Paul Greengrass make a “Jason Bourne comes out of retirement for one last adventure” movie that was literally just called Jason Bourne. With that premise and “a new guy does the Jason Bourne thing” already used up, what else is there?

Here’s a list of replacement actors, along with potential titles:- Charlie Cox: Daredevil: Bourne Again- Ciarán Hinds: Bourne To Be Wild (you know, because he played Steppenwolf)- Emile Hirsch: Bournnie & Clyde

    Bouring. Fuck off, studio.

Well, there are all those loose ends to wrap up. The Bourne Legacy only had a few moments addressing how Pamela Landy’s exposure of the assassination program led to no one being punished except for her being threatened with jail which depressingly was the most realistic thing from all this.

Although Jason Bourne is a remake, it’s manage to introduce new type of action and filmography (kinda realistic, shaky cam and multiple cuts) that were interesting back then. Now it’s became annoying feature that detracts audience. Even if they can introduce action like The Raid, it still outdated since a lot of action movie did it better or introduce new type of choreography and cinematography (eg. John Wick).Plus ex-black ops that secretly fighting against the government bidding might attract alt right nuts.

I recently rewatched all 5 Bourne movies, the original 3 for the umpteenth time, the last 2 each for only the first time since I saw them in theaters. The original trilogy is still perfect, my all-time favorite action franchise. The other two were as bad as I remember, and I think there are two factors. Both abandon the European setting, which really creates the perfect backdrop (the Las Vegas setting is especially blah). And both move away from hand-to-hand combat for more gun play. They don’t feel like Bourne films, even with Damon.I would probably see a new one, but I wouldn’t have high hopes for it.

Also, Damon is 53 years old, and this isn’t exactly a role like Tony Stark where the actor’s only there to be charismatic while a CGI model does all the fighting. We want to see the guy playing Jason Bourne actually kicking ass, and it’s just doubtful he has that in him anymore.

at the same time i can’t think of any action movie series that isn’t led by a guy in at least his 50s these days.love how much denzel sits down in the equalizer movies.

Given the fact that there’s not enough duct tape and popsicle sticks to make it doable for Jeremy Renner (who was kind of a garbage Bourne actor anyway), handing the mantle back to Matt Damon seems pretty sensible.  Although Charlie Cox would be epic.

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Ummm I realize it’s a slow news day but this happened already with Jeremy Renner and they still called it Bourne… why are you in disbelief?

  • alferd-packer-av says:

They’ll need to give him some Bourne Notice.

  • gterry-av says:

Isn’t this how it is supposed to work? Like a studio asks Matt Damon if he wants to do another Bourne movie, I would hope his immediate response would be “let me see the script”. Why would anyone expect him to sign on otherwise?
