It seems as if Knives Out 2 will continue the short, but proud Knives Out tradition of having an absolutely stacked ensemble: Just this week, it was announced that Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, and Kathryn Hahn would appear opposite Daniel Craig in Rian Johnson’s sequel. In anticipation of more rock solid casting announcements, The A.V. Club is offering its own picks for potential Knives Out alums with this week’s AVQ&A:

Who would you like to see cast in Knives Out 2?

previous arrowArnold Schwarzenegger next arrow

Okay, imagine this: Benoit Blanc, ridiculous accent in tow, sets up a meeting with the head of a mysterious crime syndicate that’s somehow linked to his latest case. He walks into a smoke-filled, shadowy office, and observes the figure, large as a mountain, seated behind the big mahogany desk. The man leans into the light… and we see Arnold Schwarzenegger’s craggy face, steadily assessing our favorite donut-hole-loving dick. Schwarzenegger has shown in recent years, after a lifetime of hardcore mugging, and the idea of him playing a taciturn, reserved heavy opposite Daniel Craig’s Southern motormouth—fulfilling the film’s “Who’s the biggest star you haven’t thought about in a second?” quota in the process—is genuinely thrilling to me. Stanley Tucci overexposed? NEVER!

  • mythoughtsnotyourinferences-av says:

John Boyega would be the actual SW alum that RJ owes a starring heroic role too.

    • mozzdog-av says:

And John Boyega is about as likely to want to reteam with Johnson as Mark Hamill.

      • laurenceq-av says:

Do you honestly think Mark Hamill wouldn’t jump at the chance?

        • mozzdog-av says:

Umm, yes. Hamill was wincing in TLJ interviews and has been salty on social media for a long, long, long time. Why would you want someone you admire (if you indeed cared about Hamill) to work with someone whose work he “fundamentally” disagreed with? Shouldn’t we leave people their dignity?

          • laurenceq-av says:

You’re a fool if you really think that.  Step away from the youtube videos….

          • mozzdog-av says:

I am sorry if I wrote something that you could not cope with. I thought that might have been the case, but I am not going to be dishonest to pander to you.The fact that he’s STILL making veiled references to TLJ as recently as The Mandalorian finale indicates his pain regarding the film. His response to Trevorrow’s Tweets also indicate his resentment over VIII.People like Hamill have the right to their emotional responses and you are going to have to deal with that.

Cast Kelly Marie Tran in the Marta-style role in the sequel, watch angry middle-aged white people die en masse from stress-induced aneurisms.(Okay I just read to the end of the actual article & saw that Cameron said the same thing. Kudos!)

      • adammcgwire-av says:

I don’t think people would be mad about her being in a Knives Out sequel, much less die en masse from it. That’s a bizarre thing to say.

Fair point! Btw I watched Luce last week and you are spot on about Kelvin Harrison Jr. An incredible performance.

  • brontosaurian-av says:

Parker Posey, Regina Hall and Randall Park.

    • Fleur-de-lit-av says:

Came here to nominate Parker Posey.  Left satified.

    • captainbubb-av says:

I read “Regina Hall” as “Regina King” and would love to see Regina King as well, taking a little detour from more dramatic projects. I don’t think she’s done anything comedic lately but she did start out on 227 and did The Boondocks so she could probably pull it off. Regina Hall is way underrated though and I’d love to see her take on a meaty role in a big film like this.

      • brontosaurian-av says:

Regina King is great, but I’m sure she can do practically anything she wants these days. I would guess Regina Hall is not in this position.

    • det--devil--ails-av says:

Parker Posey and William Sanderson as an unlikely couple!

    • fortheloveoffudge-av says:

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.Shut. Up. And. Take. My. Money.Hell, having the three of them in a heist/dark comedy would be genius.

  • TheFilthyGoat-av says:

Since your mention of Shohreh Aghdashloo reminded of me of her bit part on Netflix’s production of The Punisher, I would like to recommend a second actress from the show. Amber Rose Revah. Based on nothing other than I liked her in that show.

  • igotsuped-av says:

Danny DeVito. Lean into making it a full comedic version of an Agatha Christie Novel. If not, I will settle for Walton Goggins.

  • kirivinokurjr-av says:

    Dafoe!

  • joseiandthenekomata-av says:

If she can make the time since she’s headlining a series, I’d love to see Tatiana Maslany join the movie.I would also be fine with Gemma Chan, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and D’Arcy Carden.

  • south-of-heaven-av says:

Robert Downey Jr. so desperately needs a role in an adult movie that would benefit from his razor-sharp wit & delivery, and this would be a perfect vehicle for him.(well, not needs, since he’s sleeping on a mountain of Marvel money, Smaug-style, but you know what I mean).

  • refinedbean-av says:

Cate Blanchett could probably use a win after whatever Borderlands turns into. Tilda Swinton would be fun as fuck too.
Also, could you just do a sequel with the entire remaining cast of Deadwood, plus I guess one or two young folk to round things out? Could we resurrect Powers Boothe too?
Oh and wild-card – Zac Efron. Kid needs more to do, he’s not a terrible actor.

    • erakfishfishfish-av says:

You know, the only thing I’ve ever seen Efron in is the Neighbors films, and he’s funny as hell in them.

    • fortheloveoffudge-av says:

Tilda Swinton is actually a really great comedic actress as well. A lot of mainsteam audiences got a glimpse of that with this…

    • wabznazm-av says:

I think it would be a great idea to put the remaining cast of Deadwood in a new show. It could be totally different – Cold War spying, sci-fi, army comedy… anything!

  • mywh-av says:

Pierce Brosnan. And Timothy Dalton. And George Lazenby. You can see where I’m going with this. Also it would totally work.

  • bs-leblanc-av says:

I would just like to say CONGRATULATIONS! Since AVC started the slideshows, this is the first one I’ve actually clicked through one-by-one instead going straight to List Slides. And it was well worth it, because I actually read every slide and watched most of the clips. Bravo!

  • kerning-av says:

Shohreh AghdashlooOMG YES she was perfect in The Expanse with great air of moral ambiguity to her acting.

    • wabznazm-av says:

Do you think so? I know she’s a good and respected actor, but I thought she was dreadful in The Expanse. Weird word-stresses, wooden delivery, and the swearing didn’t work at all. Maybe it’s just me.

  • imadifferentbird-av says:

Honestly, I just hope Ana de Armas comes back for it somehow. She was delightful in the first one, and works so well as Benoit Blanc’s Watson.

  • naaziaf327-av says:

Oh I’d absolutely love to see Shohreh Aghdashloo in a Knives Out sequel, she’d be genuinely incredible in that genre!

  • ospoesandbohs-av says:

It seems like fans this week successfully wished Kathryn Hahn’s casting into existence. So hey, I’m game. I agree, Kelly Marie Tran deserves a movie like this.

    • det--devil--ails-av says:

Should she be given a pointless tangential storyline that feels like it doesn’t even belong in the movie? “Let’s all assemble in the study, so I can ask everyone some questions… Except you, Kelly Marie… I want you to go into the woods on a comedic Disneyesque adventure to help a momma skunk find her missing baby.”

      • sarcastro7-av says:

I heard that line in Craig’s Benoit Blanc voice and it’s perfect.

Agree to disagree on the point of Canto Bight. Why can’t you do what I did about TROS? Just kinda forget it happened and focus on things that hold your passion.

  • det--devil--ails-av says:

    Meat Loaf or GTFO

  • bostonbeliever-av says:

The entire cast of The Good Place.

  • mrgein-av says:

nothing, the first one sucked. major let down.

  • sentientbeard-av says:

I’ve rewatched a couple of older Geena Davis movies recently, and I think she’d crush it. She’s effortlessly funny and fun to watch, she’d more than hold her own against a stacked cast, and she’d contribute some strong “hey, I remember them!” energy that Don Johnson brought in the original.

  • kinjabitch69-av says:

The only correct answer is Ellen Wong reprising her role as Knives Chau.

  • ozilla-av says:

    Charles Dance.

  • fronzel-neekburm-av says:

Bill Murray, but I want him to be given a completely different script than everyone else.

  • coatituesday-av says:

One of the things I loved about Knives Out (and I might be in the minority) is that aside from the stellar cast, all doing hilarious and great work, the mystery plot itself was pretty tight.  That is, I think it could have worked with any cast.  (I didn’t love the throwing-up-when-telling-a-lie bit, but it was funny and KIND of seemed right…)

  • imodok-av says:

Eddie Murphy. The breadth of his talent is underestimated. He’s great at all kinds of comedy from subtle to coarse, and is a wonderful dramatic actor too.

  • akanefive-av says:

I really appreciate the Big Night and KMT picks above.

I’m going to say Daniel Kaluuya because he should be in everything.

  • dp4m-av says:

I’m picturing him as an eccentric foreign oligarch known only as The Count, with a big mustache and nonsensical military regalia…. really? You’re missing the possibility of trying to get a rights-coup and just having him appear as John Wick. Especially if this movie is going to be in Greece, just have whatever hotel will more likely than not be involved be next to The Continental in that town…Also, some of the other commenters had great ideas — Eddie Murphy, RDJ, Gemma Chan, Parker Posey among them.  Some others I’d be interested in seeing:  Martin Sheen, Anthony Michael Hall, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dule Hill…

    • erakfishfishfish-av says:

I don’t know, I’d love to see Keanu bring in some of the batshit energy he had in Freaked as Ortiz the Dog Boy.

  • det--devil--ails-av says:

    An animated Foghorn Leghorn?

  • sarcastro7-av says:

Steve Martin, but he has to promise to actually try.

  • darkesttimelinezackmorris-av says:

I’d love to see Marc Maron’s reaction to Blanc’s accent.  Just confusion moving to delight moving to cynicism.

  • hankdolworth-av says:

Tom Hanks as a murder suspect would be delightful.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

    Bryan Cranston.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

let’s get connor o’malley in this motherfucker

  • dippingsauce-av says:

I’d love to see Elliot Gould in another private eye mystery.

  • yttruim-av says:

Mary Louise Parker, please and thank you

  • storklor-av says:

Probably way too stunt-casty, but imagine the glory of Judi Dench going full mystery villain.

  • rowan5215-av says:

Adam Driver and Robert Pattinson. do I even need to say why

  • akabrownbear-av says:

    Matthew Berry please.

  • wabznazm-av says:

    Ana de Armas

  • wabznazm-av says:

Matthew Rhys. Maybe even let him be Welsh.

  • catmanstruthers2-av says:

    Frank Stallone.

  • bgunderson-av says:

Who do you want to see in Knives Out 2?Why would I want to see Knives Out 2?

  • laurenceq-av says:

    KMT is a must.

  • memo2self-av says:

Honestly, this is a really silly question, as we have no idea what the characters are… however, what I’d hope for is the movie being stolen by an unappreciated and under-the-radar actor like Ana de Armas in the original movie.

  • gregthestopsign-av says:

    Godzilla.

  • rkpatrick-av says:

As long as the movie has at least one cast member who knows how morphine affects people, the movie should be OK.
