If you’ve been crossing your arms and tapping your foot like a cool dude with ‘90s ‘tude for the past few months as you impatiently wait for more Sonic The Hedgehog content, we’ve got some good news: Variety says that Paramount and Sega have officially confirmed that a sequel to the surprisingly tolerable animated film from earlier this year is in the works, with director Jeff Fowler back on board and Pat Casey and Josh Miller writing the script. Interestingly, Variety says that things are so early that “decisions have not been made yet regarding casting,” so we don’t know if Ben Schwartz will be voicing Sonic again or if Jim Carrey will come back to play Eggman/Dr. Robotnik (the latter one seems like the bigger question mark, because he’s freakin’ Jim Carrey, but he’s gotten some positive feedback from his comedy colleagues at least). James Marsden was also in the first movie, playing Sonic’s human friend who probably had a name, but nobody’s going to the sequel to see James Marsden.

With casting still up in the air, that means we also don’t know anything about a certain two-tailed fox named Miles Prower and whether he’ll be in the movie. Tails popped up in the first movie’s credits, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a core part of the sequel. That being said, if they make a movie called Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and don’t put Tails in it, there will be riots.

I only heard about the Tails part at the end of the movie but after all that how can he not be in the next movie?

See, I’m just worried if they do more sequels we get to the weird characters like Charmy the Bee or Cream the Rabbit.

Just 90 minutes of Big the Cat.

I wish they’d bring in the original crew from the comics – Sally Acorn, Bunny Rabbot, et al. I grew up on those, and in my (admittedly biased) opinion the Sonic Adventure and later characters never measured up. (Well, except for Shadow, but Amy is just annoying.)

I like the Freedom Fighters too, but apparently they’re extremely unpopular with a large part of the games’ fandom, so I wouldn’t expect them to show up.

Just to clarify, Sally and the others originated in the SatAM cartoon, not the comic book, and Amy originated in Sonic CD. I very, very much doubt we’ll ever see any of the SatAM crew in a modern non-comic project. Not after the Ken Penders disaster.

Penders has no legal right to the SatAM characters; they were developed for the show.

You think Sega of Japan cares about that distinction?

It may take a dozen sequels but I can’t wait for Nack the Weasel to make his cinematic debut.

I’m hoping for weird characters like Charmy the Bee or Cream the Rabbit.Especially Big the Cat, as Citric mentioned. I want to see a major studio fund 90 minutes of Big the Cat fishing.

Or that weird sexified bat character that looks like she was designed to just skip the stage of pervy fans having to draw their own versions of the characters on DeviantArt before they could jerk off.

By “the works” you mean “the circular file”, right? I hope?

You say no one’s coming to the sequel for James Marsden, but honestly he was the only thing about the first one that I was remotely interested in (though not enough to actually see it). Dude’s a solid, charismatic actor.

And he had some of the best lines and reactions in the film. He and Carrey bouncing off each other was a lot of fun.

    • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

I liked his character a lot. Dude had a solid, emotional arc!

    • djburnoutb-av says:

Agreed! AV throwing needless shade. He was also pretty good in Hop playing straight man to batshit-crazy Russel Brand. That movie was also surprisingly tolerable.

Hopefully they’ll be inspired by the Sonic 2 video game and include a cheat code that lets you skip to the end.

    • weedlord420-av says:

Sonic turns Super and speeds through the movie in like 5 minutes, then the projectionist yells out to the theatre “Sorry, sorry! I was just messing around and must have accidentally put in a code. My bad.”

  • spacesheriff-av says:

nothing but bad news all week

  • weedlord420-av says:

A non-terrible video game movie and a non-terrible (non-fanmade)  Sonic product are both highly unlikely occurrences, and both together is nothing short of amazing. What I’m saying here is dammit Sega, accept your lightning in a bottle and move on, things can only go down from here.

    • firedragon400-av says:

I mean, Sega has very little influence on the actual production of the movie. It’s all Paramount.

  • batista_thumbs_up-av says:

Please do not ever disparage Donut Lord again.Excited for the sequel. The opening night crowd I saw this with lost their goddamn minds when Tails showed up.

I liked this movie a lot. It was just a solidly put together kids movie. The characters were sweet. Schwartz was a wonderful Sonic. It was also the last movie I saw in theaters before the quarantine. I remember the kids being so hyped at the end when Tails showed up. So, you know what? I trust ‘em. Definitely seemed like they know where they want to go.

Easy way to earn some good will for the sequel, cast Middleditch as Tails.
