Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Friday, October 11, and Saturday, October 12. All times are Eastern.

Top picks

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.): We are flexible on many things. We are open-minded people, trusting, patient. We understand that a good story does not require a happy ending, that it sometimes demands the opposite. But hear this, Vince Gilligan, and hear it well: Jesse Pinkman goes to Alaska to become a carpenter, and that is just what happens. Right?

Much as we would like to guarantee you a nice, juicy review at the stroke of 3:01 a.m. EST, Netflix has not sent out screeners for this little under-the-radar TV event. We’ve got no idea what happens, although we are very glad to see Skinny Pete. (Hi, Skinny Pete! Hope you get a piano solo!) But we’ll be watching it just as quick as we can. Expect a review from Erik Adams to arrive later today—and this goes without saying, but if you can’t climb in the El Camino until this evening, or are holding out to see it in theaters this weekend, you might want to avoid that review, and social media in general, until after you’ve watched.

Regular coverage

The Great British Baking Show (Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.)
Charmed (The CW, Friday, 8 p.m.): 2nd-season premiere drop-in
Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday, 11:29 p.m.)

Wild card

RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K. (Logo, Friday, 8 p.m., U.S. series premiere): Hello hello hello!

Some of you will have already seen this—new episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K. arrive on WOW Presents Plus on Thursdays at 3 p.m., and the series premiered there last week—but if you’ve got cable, and your cable package includes Logo, and you don’t want to pay the $3.99 monthly fee for the WOW service, then tonight belongs to you! Opulence! You watch everything!

First premiere on Netflix I’m staying up for. Can’t wait.

No Donna Bowman for El Camino? That’s a shame. I’ve been re-reading some of her original Breaking Bad reviews over the past few days and was really hoping you guys could roll a barrel of cash up to her house to get her back for this. (As she’s continued to stay in that world for the Better Call Saul reviews I’m guessing it might just be a case of her having other stuff to do today and didn’t want to drop it to quickly watch and review a Netflix film ASAP – but her writing will still be missed)

El Camino was a lovely meditative epilogue to Breaking Bad. I enjoyed it very much.

I took a disco nap yesterday afternoon to stay up and watch El Camino, and holy shit, it paid off in every possible way. No spoilers here, but man, go watch it right now, bitch. You won’t be disappointed.Vince Gilligan is a fuckin’ madman.

I’m really bad about talking about something without inadvertently spoiling it, so scroll on by if you want to avoid SPOILERS FOR EL CAMINO:……..
It was a lot of fun, with some crackerjack suspense moments, but I found it curiously unsatisfying. Jesse goes through a bunch more shit, takes on a new scumbag villain, and at the end of it, ends up pretty much where we all hoped he’d end up when we last saw him driving off screaming into the night. It’s essentially an extra 2 episodes tacked on after the series finale, and I’m not sure that’s what I wanted in a 5-years-later sequel.

I basically agree. I mean, I liked it well enough, but… it seemed…unnecessary.  It’s a two hour long coda.

I think CBS needs to grab Badger’s Star Trek: TOS spec script for their Short Treks All-Access series.

  • knukulele-av says:

I want an MST-3K style show where Badger and Skinny Pete play video games, riff on science fiction TV, and do bong hits. I would watch the fuck out of that. And so would you.
