Quinta Brunson’s new hit series Abbott Elementary has quickly become one of the biggest comedies on network TV, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that it’s officially been picked up for a second season. ABC announced the news with a memo from Abbott Elementary’s hilariously awful principal Ava Coleman (played by Janelle James).

The memo reads, “The camera crew I hired to showcase all that I’ve made happen at our beautiful school thinks I’m a star. I mean, are we surprised? No, we’re not 🙂 With that said, it is with great pleasure that I share they’ll be returning for the 2022-2023 school year! That’s right—Abbott Elementary Season Two is coming to a screen near you.”

On the show, Ava couldn’t be less helpful to everyone who works at the school if she tried, but in her announcement she actually asks viewers to make donations to real teachers and schools—but, of course, the statement is written in a way that’s very true to Ava.

“Despite my being a natural in front of the camera, these things don’t come for free, and my staff is having trouble seeing all of my unleashed potential! Something about needing supplies? Anywho, I could use your help getting them (Janine) off my back. If you’re interested in supporting them and our community of young mind shapers, please visit DonorsChoose.org,” it says.

She welcomes “spa credits and gift cards over $100 on the heels of this thrilling announcement.” Never change, girl.

As ABC shared in its renewal announcement, Abbott Elementary is the network’s top new comedy in two years in the viewership demographic of adults ages 18-49. And it’s this season’s top new comedy, tied with CBS’ Ghosts, within that same demographic.

There are only two episodes remaining of the first season. The next episode airs on Tuesday, March 22 at 9 p.m. ET.

This is a good show despite the documentary format being so worn out that it actually makes me angry at this point

I’m not disliking the format use here, but I do think some media taking on this format need a stronger in-universe reason for why they’re the subject of documentary. And there’s others like that Disney+ High School Musical show that acts like a mockumentary, but there aren’t actually cameras or crew following them at all.

this show is so damn good.

I love this show. It is a little like The Office but in a good way. Randall Einhorn and Jen Celotta have directed episodes and they both worked on The Office. Janelle James is a hoot. Quinta did an interview on Fresh Air a few weeks ago. It’s worth a listen. She’s just adorable. She got a bunch of money from ABC for marketing the show, and she donated it to schools so the teachers could get supplies. Her mother was a teacher.
This is one of those shows that is funny, and sweet, and it just makes you feel happy.

Did you hear Quinta on Seth Rogen’s podcast? She has a sweet story about accidentally meeting Paul Rudd well before she got in the business.

I think it’s actually closer in tone/characters to Trial & Error which more people should watch if, ya know, it was streaming on fucking anything anywhere. Seriously why the fuck isn’t that show on Peacock by now, it drives me nuts.

I loved that show and it sucks that it’s like nowhere to stream; made it hard to recommend it to friends.Like, NBC has all of that short-lived 90s show Jack of All Trades on their website for free, but Trial & Error is nowhere without paying for it.

That’s good to hear. I checked it out on a whim and found it very entertaining.

I’m kind of surprised it took this long. It felt like a lock for multiple seasons out of the gate.

  • grant8418-av says:

So well deserved. I hope they go for many more seasons after S2.
