Abbott Elementary continues its hot streak by leading the 2022 Television Critics Association Awards nominations with five nods, for Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Program of the Year, and nods for stars Janelle James and Quinta Brunson.

Better Call Saul follows close behind with four nominations for its final season, including those for leads Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn. Buzzy hits Severance (from Apple TV+) and Yellowjackets (Showtime) also received four noms, with nods to respective stars Adam Scott and Melanie Lynskey.

Despite its recent struggles, Netflix made a strong showing with 13 nominations; Squid Game and Maid receiving multiple noms each. Still, the streamer couldn’t compete with the combined power of HBO and HBO Max, which together garnered 21 total nominations: Hacks, Barry, Succession, The White Lotus, and Station Eleven are just a few of the programs recognized from the Warner Bros. Discovery stable.

If I had to nominate one person from Only Murders in the Building it would be Selena Gomez. And if I had to nominate one person from Severance it might be Britt Lower or Tramell Tillman.Melanie Lynskey from Yellowjackets for sure (though Christina Ricci is also great).

    • erakfishfishfish-av says:

I 100% agree with Tramell Tillman. I don’t know where they found this guy, but he is so good on the show.

How Tramell Tillman nails the balance between goofy, friendly, menacing, and worried, I have no idea, nor do I know how they knew he would be able to do that, because it seems impossible. But he is just right in the role.

I really wish there was some way to recognize Sophie Nelisse for play Lynskey’s character’s younger version.  It’s just hard for me to separate the two.  It really is of a piece, two actors but really one character, one role.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

She is excellent too & their performances match nicely & in some ways I think that is even more to the credit of Sophie Nelisse, who probably is more patterning herself after Lynskey than the other way (she had to change her hair & wear contacts)

        • cinecraf-av says:

Nelisse is remarkable.  Really all the young actors on that show are.  That’s what was so exciting for me, to find this series, because I feel like I’m watching a whole new generation of future stars.  I think this series will be discussed in the future like The Outsiders or Dazed and Confused or Mad Men, for how deep the bench of actors are, and for all the careers that get launched with it.

Ella Purnell, who played Jackie, I particularly think seems to be a star in the making

I love that How to With John Wilson is listed under OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN NEWS AND INFORMATION

Despite its recent struggles, Netflix made a strong showing with 13 nominations;Had to shoehorn in a random Netflix dig somewhere.

Better Call Saul is so genuinely amazing I sometimes struggle to believe it’s as good as it is. It better clean up a bunch of awards for this last season.
