Abbott Elementary is returning for season 4

It’s time to freakin’ celebrate because—of course—we’re getting more Abbott Elementary. Although it’s not a shocker ABC is renewing its brilliant ongoing sitcom, we’re happy to report the TV show will be back for a fourth season, as announced at the 2024 Television Critics Association’s (TCA) winter press tour by cast member William Stanford Davis.

The news comes less than a week after Abbott returned for a hilarious, supersized season three premiere on February 7. That third season is shorter than usual, though: It consists of only 14 episodes, instead of the usual 22, because production was halted last summer during Hollywood’s long-overdue labor movement. Thankfully, we’ll make up for lost time and won’t have to wait too long, because season four will arrive in the fall.

Created by series star Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary set at a Philadelphia public elementary school. It follows the day-to-day lives of the teachers striving to improve the education system. The cast also includes Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, and Davis. In the third season, Josh Segarra, Kimia Behpoornia, and Benjamin Norris join the ensemble.

Since its debut, Abbott Elementary has been consistently funny, and consistently engaging audiences by quadrupling (!) in viewership ratings. According to ABC, the show marks the strongest season average for an original comedy since the 2019-2020 TV season. Abbott also ranks as their number one multiplatform series. It helps that episodes stream on Hulu the next day—ah, the perks of being under the same Disney umbrella.

Plus, Abbott has been nominated for 15 Primetime Emmys overall, with Brunson nabbing the Outstanding Comedy Actress win just last month. It’s safe to say the ongoing third season will also be a strong contender for the upcoming September 2024 Emmy ceremony. All this to say, once again, it’s not a surprise ABC handed out such an early renewal to Abbott Elementary. We sense a lengthy, happy future for the show’s run.
