Fresh from his Emmy nomination for Severance, Adam Scott’s next job is seemingly going to be very different. As confirmed by Deadline, the Parks And Recreation actor has joined the cast of Madame Web, Sony’s next expansion in its universe of Marvel characters. Starring Dakota Johnson (Persuasion), the cast also includes Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus), Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), Isabela Merced (Dora The Explorer), Tahar Rahim (A Prophet), and Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife).

Apart from Johnson playing the title character, details on the project have been kept under wraps. Madame Web was originally depicted as an elderly blind woman, but the title has also been held by the more youthful Julia Carpenter, which is presumably what’s happening here with Johnson’s casting. There is speculation that Merced’s character is Anya Corazon, the hero known as Araña, and that the film will be a Spider-Women team-up.

Amongst Marvel fans, Scott has been a somewhat popular casting for a character who is definitely not going to show up in Madame Web unless some complicated things happen, rights-wise: Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. (Admittedly, this contingent has not been as vocal as the one hoping for another NBC sitcom actor.)

Madame Web is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Sony controls the film appearances of Spider-Man and adjacent characters; Peter Parker has been loaned out to Marvel Studios on a limited basis since 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Sony also has Kraven The Hunter in production now, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Christopher Abbott.

Madame Web is currently filming in Boston. A report from Boston.com indicates that at least some of the story will take place in New York City in the early 2000s, thanks to set decorations including ads for Palm Pilots and Beyoncé’s Dangerously In Love.

Besides Severance, Scott was last seen in Loot, another Apple TV+ series. More than a decade after its initial cancelation, he recently reprised his role in the acclaimed Starz comedy Party Down, though a release date has yet to be announced.

Dakota Johnson in a post-modern, erotic re-imagining of the beloved classic Charlotte’s Web.Also, can’t wait to hear Sydney Sweeney complain about how no one is taking her seriously in Madame Web.

Their version of Kraven is reportedly an endlessly kind and noble friend to all animals. Feel free to Google that to see if I’m lying.

    • milligna000-av says:

Eh. Kraven was always a fucking stupid character, lacked that full-on paranoid Ditko weirdness of all the best Spidey villains. It’s a concept that I certainly don’t mind different versions of, especially if he doesn’t wear that stupid outfit.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

That’s part of the problem with doing all these spidey-villain movies. They won’t let them be too evil, for fear the audience won’t relate to them. So everyone gets turned into an anti-hero or even just a hero and it’s boring as shit. Of course it doesn’t help that the movies are terrible. I’m waiting for them to realize that hiring writers is a waste of time and money. They aren’t helping, so far. I think I’d have enjoyed Venom 2 more if it was a series of random scenes and no one had any actual dialogue, just made sounds like “Blaaaarg” and “Nuuuurple!”

  • docprof-av says:

A few years ago I would’ve thought this meant it was going to be an awful movie. But he’s finally been starting to get cast in more non terrible things lately. But not necessarily movies. And this is from the same people that brought us Morbius.

Having a sighted actress play a blind character? Seems like that should be getting some attention…

  • mr-rubino-av says:

You’d think they would want to get what actually happens in these movies out as soon as possible instead of relying on the intense fandom of Spidey’s 18th to 31st most popular work acquaintances, but sure. This is a sequel to the Suspiria remake until proven otherwise, which I guess makes it a remake of Inferno. I’d be there opening night.

This endless dance of Sony having to spit out Spider-Man adjacent movies so the rights don’t default to Disney is the most bizarre Hollywood studio war in modern times. By agreement they can’t use Spider-Man so they are left with villians to make movies around. Venom, who has some name recognition, made them some money. Morbius was a massive bomb and Sony’s lineup is fucking Madame Web and Kraven? They too are both going to bomb. Sony hasn’t been able to make a hugely profitable Spider-Man film in decades now, but I can understand them not wanting to give up the most famous Marvel IP that they own, particularly now that the MCU has been hugely profitable for years. I really can’t see where this dance will end, aside from Disney saying, here’s lots of billions of dollars to get Spider-Man back.

    • yellowfoot-av says:

Do the actual MCU associated but Sony produced Spider-Man movies not actually count for them holding on to the rights? My impression was that these side continuity movies are more about executives convinced they can squeeze the same turnip twice.

      • ohnoray-av says:

which they ain’t wrong, Venom made lots of bank for them. Sure they’re looking for that success again, although Madame Webb seems a strange character to pick unless they really do something interesting. They have a good director attached so who knows.

      • bigal6ft6-av says:

I think it makes sense that doing an Aunt May movie or Morbius 2 would still count as holding onto the character rights, as all the characters are basically bundled together. Kingpin for example was owned by 20th Century Fox under the live-action Daredevil rights. (which flipped over to Marvel even before they bought fox). He also seems to be an animated Spider-Man character, hence him showing up in the animated Into the Spider-Verse. All those various X-Men movies were basically about holding onto that bundle.

    • laurenceq-av says:

The last three Spider-Man movies were made by Sony and were hugely profitable.

    • curiousorange-av says:

“Venom, who has some name recognition, made them some money…Sony hasn’t been able to make a hugely profitable Spider-Man film in decades ”. Ha, what kind of Disney-fanboy anti-Sony trolling is this? Spiderman and Venom have been incredibly successful for Sony in the last decade.

      • capeo-av says:

In the last decade the Spider-Man movies have been MCU movies. This is not hard to understand.

        • curiousorange-av says:

Ok, this is definitely a troll. Even a Disney fan-boy wouldn’t be idiotic enough to claim the Tom Holland Spiderman movies aren’t produced and distributed by Sony.

    • dremiliolizardo-av says:

Think of them as loss leaders. If they keep making terrible movies, they get to make money off Marvel when they use Sony owned Spiderman for anything, and Sony doesn’t have to do squat to get paid for that

  • drips-av says:

Maybe he’s playing his character from “My Blind Brother”?

  • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

What’s wrong with Spider-Woman? Is she not available?

  • akabrownbear-av says:

This makes me wonder – when is that Party Down revival coming out. Thought it wrapped filming a few months ago.

  • imnotsteveguttenburg-av says:

“Madame Web is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Sony controls the film appearances of Spider-Man and adjacent characters;”

Word is that Feige will be Coproducing this movie. So maybe Sony learned from their Morby mistakes and will be listening to Feige, Marvel, and Disney.

  • beefens-av says:

I look forward the Spider-man adjacent universe once again expanding and inevitably contracting when this movie is met with a deafening “meh”.

  • schmilco-av says:

    U Talkin’ Spider-Man 2 My Spider, Man?

  • beattybeattybeatty-av says:

I hope he wins an Oscar for this and follows through with his R U Talkin’ promise
