Sexism is, in fact, everywhere, but Hollywood has its own special issues with misogyny. One such example is the entertainment industry’s historically terrible treatment of older women (see: Amy Schumer’s “Last Fuckable Day” sketch). This can be blamed for lots of injustice, including, in Alan Cumming’s opinion, the lack of a Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion sequel.

“I would love to do a sequel. I have to say, I think the fact that there hasn’t been is a really big example of the misogyny of Hollywood,” The Traitors host tells The A.V. Club’s own Drew Gillis in a new interview. “You know, I think that the things I’ve heard about why, sort of like, ‘Oh, you know, they’re getting on a bit, older women, blah blah blah.’ Terrible. It’s such a popular film. If it was two men in that, you know, two men successful film, we would’ve had six by now.”

Back in June, star Mira Sorvino teased that the Romy And Michele team was “closer than we’ve ever been” to getting a sequel to the cult classic off the ground. During an appearance on TODAY, she teased that “something might be in the works.” Not long after, her co-star Lisa Kudrow claimed writer Robin Schiff is “thinking about it and coming up with something” in an interview with Jess Cagle on his SiriusXM show.

As for Cumming, he says “nothing’s come up” on his end, though there’s been discussion of commemorating “whichever anniversary it would be now, 25 years or something?” Rumors of a sequel have been swirling around about that long, he adds, “But I’d be very in for it. You know, I have such fond memories of that film. And obviously it’s sort of this cultural iconic thing, and everybody of a certain generation, it’s really a special thing for them.”

I too am disappointed in the misogyny in Hollywood that is keeping a Romy and Michele sequel from us.(And I am also disappointed in myself for seeing the header image and my mind involuntarily immediately thinking this article was perhaps about a sequel for … White Chicks)

If their 10 year reunion was in 1997, they would have had their 35th reunion in 2022. By the time the new one comes out they will have more than doubled in age from their first reunion. I still want to see it!

So, who is to blame for the fact that there IS a second Romy & Michelle movie?

“If it was two men in that, you know, two men successful film, we would’ve had six by now.”If this leads to the ungreenlighting of Super Bad 6 I’m going to be PISSED.

Romy and Michele made $29 million on a $20 million budget, so it probably came in at a loss after marketing. So, it’s not that surprising it didn’t get a sequel.

    1. I would watch the shit out of a Romy and Michele sequel.2. Maybe I’m wrong, but isn’t Hollywood misogyny very definitely the reason there hasn’t been a sequel to this point? Harvey Weinstein blacklisted Mira Sorvino after she didn’t have sex with him, right?

i love romy and michele, and even if i didn’t…i mean, worse thing have gotten multiple sequels, so why not?i’m actually kinda surprised a sequel hasn’t been made, considering the number of super-cool women running their own production companies these days.

Not allowing fun characters to be ruined by multiple disappointing sequels seems like an act of grace more so than misogyny. It’s okay for good things to stand on their own.

  • bdylan-av says:

i for one welcome any misogyny that prevents pointless sequels from existing.

The Culture really is using the terms “sexism” and “misogyny” completely interchangeably, isn’t it?

    • jgp1972-av says:

      yes.

    • mrfallon-av says:

There really is this increasing conflation of terminology that makes me nervous because at some point I’m going to find myself calling for a more nuanced debate, specifically around more concise and specific terminology.

And I’ll be calling for that while also acutely aware that “calling for a more nuanced debate” is typically a strategy to split hairs and argue in bad faith, and someone will accuse me of doing it the same way and to the same end.

  • jgp1972-av says:

Hes out of his mind. Theres no reason that movie needed a sequel.

I hate alan cumming, his whole stupid act is “look at how annoyingly gay i am.”

  • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

To be fair, there’s only been three Hangover films to date.

This is the problem with white feminism right now: totally focused on doing whatever men are doing without ever asking, “Is that a good thing to do?”

Two sequels to the highest box office for a r rated comedy for years? Yes, let’s compare that to Romy and Michelle.

I guess it’s a total Mandela effect but I could have sworn there was some sort of shitty direct to video sequel with a different cast.
