Reassuring fans that CBS All Access’ upcoming show centered on legendary Starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard won’t simply be a set of hour-long, single-take shots of Patrick Stewart monologuing in character, recounting old space adventures and tips for manufacturing wine—although, please take note, CBS: We would absolutely watch that show—Variety reports today that some blood has now been injected into the upcoming Star Trek series’ cast. Specifically, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Isa Briones have all signed on for the series, which is being executive produced by Stewart and author Michael Chabon, among others.

Briones is a relative newcomer to the world of film and TV, having mostly previously worked as a theater actress. Treadaway—not to be confused with his equally twitchy actor brother, Luke—will be best known to American audiences from either Penny Dreadful or Mr. Mercedes. And Pill, to quote Variety, “is best known for playing Maggie Jordan on Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series The Newsroom,” because apparently we’re pretending like Kim Pine in the Scott Pilgrim movie just never existed, huh?

The trio of new stars join a cast that also includes Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, and Evan Evagora. Meanwhile, the show’s producers have given absolutely zero indication of what the series will be about, or what tone it’ll strike—beyond a very vague notion of it being “the next chapter” of Picard’s life—so, hey, maybe it will be that vinification masterclass we’ve all been dreaming of, and these new whippersnappers are just his students, hanging on his every crisply-accented word.

Alison Pill looks like Ellen Page playing Sarah Paulson in a TV movie.

Picard: Cadet Hart, here is a transporter credit. Take it. Visit your mother. Tell her there is serious doubt about your ever becoming a Starfleet Officer.Cadet: [leaving classroom] You… are a SON OF A BITCH, Picard!Picard: Cadet Hart! That is the most intelligent thing you’ve said all day. You may take your seat.

“what tone it’ll strike”Didn’t Chabon say it was going to be optimistic and cerebral?  Or did i just wish that he said that.

I believe he said the show would be a fever, longing still for that which further nurseth the disease.

I feel guilty when I see Alison Pill because I always associate her with that Book of Daniel show I couldn’t stand.

CBS has so far show zero ability to make a decent Star Trek series.  And out of all of the things in the Star Trek universe that they could make a new series out of, an 80-something Patrick Stewart doesn’t even make the list.  This show is going to suck buffalo balls.

I’m still holding out hope for “The Captain Picard Mysteries,” wherein a cantankerous yet still sharp as a tack Captain Picard (ret.) investigates acts of foul play in the final frontier, aided by a few whippersnapper upstarts. Will Picard catch the killer this week? And will he do before tea time so that he might enjoy a hot, soothing cup of Earl Grey?
That, or maybe a Star Trek version of The Mod Squad, wherein a cynical veteran Picard takes a collection of Starfleet Academy rejects and misfits under his wing, and thereby learns that maybe he could learn a think or two from these “kids” as well.

Or…’Once upon a time, three little girls went to Starfleet Academy…now they work for me.  My name’s Jean-Luc.’.

Great. And they could have Barclay instead of Bosley as the goofy, lovable older male sidekick.
