I, Tonya examines the early life of former Olympian Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) growing up with an abusive mother (played by Allison Janney). The film leads up to the U.S. Figure Skating Championship in 1994, where her ex-husband (played by Sebastian Stan) hired a man to break the leg of fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan.
