Despite the almost 33-year gap between between films, Amazon Prime’s first shots of the long-awaited sequel Coming 2 America shows that little has changed for Akeem (Eddie Murphy) or the resplendent land of Zamunda. The streaming platform released a few images from the forthcoming film, each one radiating with familiarity for those who are fans of the first, similarly-named film. With most of the original cast returning to the kingdom, the new chapter appears to bring many of the beloved elements of the original comedy back for a new audience, including the Queens barbershop that allowed Murphy to flex his handle on multiple in-scene characters for the first time.

While there still aren’t very many details regarding the central plot of the sequel, which was penned by Kenya Barris and original screenwriters Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, Amazon shares that “newly-crowned King Akeem and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.” As the photos below indicate, the new film welcomes back Murphy, Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, and Garcelle Beauvais. Joining the veterans are Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, and Wesley Snipes. Coming 2 America debuts on Amazon Prime on March 5, 2021. In the meantime, check out the pics below.

I’m very disappointed to not see Cuba Gooding Jr. in that barber chair.

That Mets jacket and colors reminds me of just how fucking ugly the NY Islanders jerseys are….

Firstly, Murphy has barely aged. Secondly, why no Eriq La Salle??

    YES! YES! FUCK YOU 2!!

If Akeem is king, what’s Jones’ role in this? I’m assuming King Joffe didn’t abdicate, so is Jones appearing in the sky like Mufasa?

None of those barbershop characters are dead yet? Saul has to be 120 years old by now. Also, why does an older, presumably wiser Akeem still think all that Mets gear is the way to blend in in New York?

I’m gonna be honest; my hopes for a thirty-year-old Eddie Murphy sequel are not high. Especially a sequel to what is possibly his best non-Beverly Hills Cop movie (and honestly, I think I’d put Coming to America on top; certainly I’ve watched it more times). Not gonna hate, but I think I’m fine sticking with the original, thanks all the same.

His best non-Beverly Hills Cop Movie is also his best movie: Trading Places. That being said, after the Dolemite movie and his SNL appearance I’m willing to give the man a chance. He was incredible in both of them.

His best non-Beverly Hills Cop Movie is also his best movie: Trading Places.(In all honesty, not a huge fan of that one.)I’ll concede that Murphy’s been on a bit of an upturn recently, but it’s not just him TBH; comedy sequels are hard to get right at the best of times, and I can’t think of a single sequel to a thirty-year old comedy that’s really been worth it. Still, wouldn’t mind being proved wrong.

You’re history’s greatest monster. You’re also kind of right as in general comedy sequels are not worth waiting for by and large. Still though, I honestly think Trading Places is his best and funniest film albeit he has to share the film with Aykroyd.
