Get your motors running and raise your glasses, NBC has renewed both Grand Crew and American Auto for second seasons in a slew of programming announcements.

Grand Crew stars Echo Kellum, Justin Cunningham, Grasie Mercedes, Carl Tart, Aaron Jennings, and Nailed It’s Nicole Byer. The series from writer-producer Phil Augusta Jackson (Insecure, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) follows a group of Black friends who meet up at wine bar to talk about the ups and downs of their lives. Jackson executive produces Grand Grew alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor.

The first season of workplace comedy American Auto introduced us to a group of Detroit-based automotive executives who try to keep the company afloat as the industry shifts gears. Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White, and X Mayo star make up the ensemble cast. The series is Justin Spitzer’s Superstore follow-up project.

Two new series were revealed today as well, as the network placed George Lopez’s show Lopez Vs. Lopez and the legal comedy Night Court on the schedule next season. A little surprising both American Auto and Grand Crew got renewed. I wonder if they’re getting a lot of views in foreign markets. Domestically, Grand Crew is NBC’s second-worst performing show right now, just above Transplant. American Auto and Young Rock are doing better, but both only get about half the amount of viewers any of the Law & Orders do, let alone the Chicago trilogy.
Not surprising Kenan and Mr. Mayor got canned. Both were getting low-Fox numbers.
For those curious, the best performers on NBC right now are Chicago Fire, Med, and PD in that order, followed by La Brea, This is Us, and the Law & Orders all doing pretty similarly.

NBC probably wishes it was 2009 again lol.

It’s astonishing how bad some of the Law & Order reboot episodes have been.Still, it’s an established product, and probably doesn’t cost much to make (or at least less than other shows), so why not keep it around. (Assuming it’s coming back, of course. But then again see first sentence.)

        It’s renewed.
I think the Law half has gotten much better (though it still needs to fill out the side cast), but the Order half has been very, very weak thus far.
Apparently the showrunner was previous in charge of some of the more recent seasons of SVU, which were hated by fans.

Grand Crew is good. It deserves more hype.

… and it probably doesn’t cost that much to make – especially when a chunk of each episode has the cast sitting around sipping wine.(Also, it probably has ‘promotional consideration provided by’ … Big Wine!)

I liked Mr Mayor. It wasn’t as good as 30 Rock but it had the pedigree. American Auto is fine but it gets a little too sitcom-y sometimes. Grand Crew has a great cast but the writing is spotty

I had such high hopes for Mr Mayor, but it was painfully bad. I did enjoy American Auto so I’m happy to see that get another season. Curious about the Night Court reboot. I’ll give it a shot for no other reason than to see John Larroquette again since the cancellation of The Librarians.

I’m bummed about Mr. Mayor. That show had good jokes.

Happy that Grand Crew got renewed, just cause I love seeing Carl Tart and Nicole Byer in all the things!

Mr. Mayor reminded me so much of the first couple of seasons of Parks & Rec, still trying to figure itself out but occasionally flashing real sparks of potential. The episodes overall tended to fall flat but there were some great jokes in there. (Not the names though. These shows have to get over the idea that a weird name is somehow a hilarious joke. And seriously, who lost a bet to Ken Kwapis? Because that’s what it felt like, making it Jaden’s last name and shoehorning it into every episode.)

The two series biting the dust at NBC are the Ted Danson-led Mr. Mayor and Kenan Thompson’s Kenan. Both of these shows managed to get two seasons on the network.I misread that as “both of these shows managed to get two seasons out of the network”, which I thought was weird phrasing, and gave me the visual of Ted Danson and Kenan Thompson roughing up some NBC exec and shoving him between themselves until he goes “Fine, FINE! You guys can get two seasons, but that’s the best I can do!”

  • captaintragedy-av says:

Good news on those two shows, but I’m bummed about the cancelations of Kenan and Mr. Mayor. The latter in particular had really hit its stride toward the end of season 1 and become one of the funnier sitcoms on network. Not sure I’ve ever seen Bobby Moynihan be the MVP of anything before.
