Disney released the first trailer for Jon Favreau’s Lion King remake on Thanksgiving, and though it was the perfect crowd-pleasing preview to release on Turkey Day, some bad lions out there have pointed out that nothing about it (beyond the visuals) seems to be particularly different from the original. Basically, some detractors out there who didn’t feel chills when “Circle Of Life” kicked in are wondering what the point of remaking Lion King is if Favreau is just going to do a perfect recreation of the original. Well, it turns out now that he’s definitely not making a perfect recreation of the original, because Disney has decided to fuck up the airtight Lion King canon by introducing a totally new character.
As reported by Variety, the new character is an elephant shrew that will be voiced by famous funny person (and accomplished animal voice actor) Amy Sedaris. We don’t know anything about the character, or how she’ll fit into the Lion King saga, but the original movie was only about 90 minutes long. The new one will probably be at least a couple minutes longer, so maybe Sedaris’ elephant shrew will just be there to pad things out by explaining some of the plot holes in the original movie (like, why doesn’t Mufasa get up after he falls into that herd of wildebeests? Why did he sleep through the whole rest of the movie?).

Timon and I would go over to Pumba’s and Nala would turn us on to a hot load of mescaline crumbled into a tumbler of ether with a float of Percocet jimmies. I’d wake up with blood on my ass, and then we’d get high. Those were some good times!

Mufasa went to a wildlife reserve up-veldt, where he runs around all day chasing antelope and getting lots of tummy rubs.
Just a guess, she’s Nala’s friend and confidante when she searches for Simba. I don’t think she’ll be associated with Timon and Pumba just because Timon’s part in Can You Feel The Love Tonight song has him say “now our trio’s down to two”.
I’m hoping she’ll say something along the lines of, “Simba? Gross, girl! Ain’t that your cousin?”
the circle of life apparently has room for incest.
Incidentally, The Circle of Life is also what they call their family tree.

I’m hoping her character is more like Princess Caroline and nothing like her Mimi character in Kimmy Schmidt.
They’ve also thrown a new character into the Aladdin remake….a palace friend for Jasmine (who isn’t a tiger). I kinda feel if Jasmine had more friends within the walls, she wouldn’t have tried to ESCAPE the walls, resulting in no movie.
Isn’t Billy Magnussen–who I remember best from As the World Turns but now seems to play increasingly sleazy characters–also part of the cast as one of her rival suitors?
There were “rival suitors” in the original, remember? They didn’t stand a chance with her because they were all snooty.
Good point–I guess it could be seen as just expanding that concept, although I gather in this case he’s an actually fully formed character (who I think even sings some of a new song).

Its her brother David Sedaris’s birthday in about a month. Turning 62(!). Time flies, I still think of him a Crumpet the elf.

Why are the making a “live action” remake of a movie about talking animals. It’s still just a cartoon.
