Andrew Garfield did his best to keep his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home a secret. He lied to nearly everyone who asked, denying everything. But there there were three people (besides that delivery guy who spilled his findings on Twitter and, of course, Garfield’s agent) who were privy to Garfield returning to the big screen as Spider-Man.

The Tick, Tick…Boom! actor went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where, in addition to being asked about his recent Golden Globes win and working with Lin-Manuel Miranda, he also discussed the arduous process of keeping the big MCU secret.

“I lied to people for a good two years and a half and I lied to the internet for two years, and it felt great,” Garfield admitted. DeGeneres asked him who actually knew about his secret, and Garfield said, “My dad, my brother, and my mother at the time, just kind of us.”

He added, “It was fun to keep it secret. Because, you know when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone? And they’re like ‘I hate surprises. Tell me, is the party happening?’ No seriously, don’t mess around, because you know I actually hate surprises.’ […] So it felt like I was organizing a surprise birthday party for a bunch of people who I knew would appreciate it.”

One person was certainly surprised by Garfield was his Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone. In a recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused, Garfield said Stone kept texting him asking if the rumors were true.

He responded to her text, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” But Stone wouldn’t budge—she knew something was up. “She was like, ‘Shut up. Just tell me,’” recalled Garfield. “ I’m like ‘I honestly don’t know.’ I kept it going with her. And then she saw [the movie]. She was like, ‘You’re a jerk.’”

this man really surfed the PR wave and came out on top. good for him, he had a crusher of a year and if i’m reading the internet correctly he got the most applause and laughs out of nwh (rang true at my screening).tick tick boom really blew me away. i’m not a musical fan and i’m especially not a lin manuel miranda fan, but garfield truly gives one of the best performances of last year.

Give him another spidey movie with competent writers and a director. He’s earned it.

personally i’m good on seeing him as spider-man ever again, i think nwh counted enough as his do-over.

Honestly, I think the whole ‘No Way Home for Best Picture’ push is a bit much (and I really liked it) but if they gave Garfield a surprise Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role I wouldn’t be against it. He was clearly having so much fun with it and the reaction to it has been great.

i do think it’s very funny that they spent the entire year telling us eternals was supposed to be the one we wanted to go for the oscar but when noone cared they just tucked and rolled that sentiment into spider-man.also i agree, i had fun watching it but it’s a pretty messy movie. i would say it falls right in the middle of the spider-men flicks. if garfield gets a best actor nod for tick tick boom i’ll happily let him get away with a cheeky spider-man best supporting one too. he WAS the best supporting spider-man, at least.

Eyes of Tammy Faye was a just-okay movie but he was so great as Jim Bakker.

He had the best moment in the movie. I have a heart of stone encased in iron, but still got a bit choked up. They really did right by him and his incarnation.

Everyone knows Spider-People can’t keep a secret from their BFF Mephisto…

He only told three people, and yet everyone knew he’d be in it…

I enjoyed his performance on No Way home, but I feel the discourse about that needs be shifted to his performance on Tick, Tick… Boom.

I’m not one who normally enjoys modern musicals, but I was absolutely blown away by his acting on that film. More people need to talk about that film. Pop culture discourse has been all about him deserving another shot with Spider-Man. I say he’s above that now and I’d rather see him acting roles in prestige films that will showcase his skills.
