Palm Springs made history at this year’s Sundance Film Festival when Hulu and Neon shelled out $17.5 million (and 69 cents) for the comedy. That might seem a hefty price for a Groundhog Day-aping flick starring Andy Samberg and helmed by a relatively unknown filmmaker, but our own A.A. Dowd said it “might be worth the price.”

“It’s that rare pure crowd-pleaser that requires little in the way of apologies, and could really connect with audiences,” he wrote in his review of the film, which finds Samberg’s slacker and Cristin Milioti’s maid of honor swept up in a tricky situation at a Palm Springs wedding. If creators are going to continue reusing Groundhog Day’s premise, our review goes on to say, “they’d be wise to recycle it as wonderfully as Palm Springs does.”

Today, Hulu has announced that the film will hit the streamer and play “select drive-ins” on July 10. A trailer, we imagine, is imminent. In the meantime, check out review here.

I have Hulu too though its interface is so infuriating to me that I might not  care to pay for it much longer

I was lucky enough to go a preview screening not long before the lockdowns began.I signed an NDA, so I can’t say how much I enjoyed it.

Cristin Milioti has carved out a good career for herself post-HIMYM and 30 Rock. I’m always happy to see her on my screen. Excited to watch this.

Spoiler: Palm Springs is a “flash sideways” in which the Mother never met the Father, and instead lived a long, happy life.

I was just thinking, “Does she die in this one too?”

Well-deserved justice for Tracey McConnell. Just as Cobie Smulders getting to hook up with Jake Johnson and Michael Ealy in Stumptown is justice for Robin Scherbatsky.

Cool, I’ve been excited to see this since Dowd’s review.  I mean, I was probably going to watch it anyway, because I’m a sucker for anything with time loops and I like Samberg and Milioti.  But Dowd’s review just amped that excitement right up.

Stoked to see this, and I’ve been wondering if drive-ins might have a resurgence in This Age of COVID.

One of the drive ins in my area tried to reopen last weekend but got shut down because the county they’re in isn’t open yet.I don’t think the other two have even tried to open yet.But I’m still hoping to see the new Bill & Ted movie in August at the same drive in where I saw Bogus Journey all those years ago:)

From what I’ve personally seen, our local drive-in is packed every weekend, and they’re not even playing new releases (because there are none to play…) I sure as hell will get out to my local drive-in to watch this though, I’ve been looking for a good reason to stop by. So many fond memories…

Get ready for a new innovation from the people behind Quibi, the drive-by, a forty second movie that plays on a roadside billboard that you try to take in as you speed past in your car.

      • goddammitbarry-av says:

Desperation and Quibi are practically synonymous now. What a thing to design a streaming service tailor made for commutes only for commuting to disappear.

I used to really dislike Samberg. I’ve come to enjoy his work on ‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ but I’m not sure if that’d translate to his other work. I saw him a while back in a film called ‘Celeste and Jessie Forever’ and didn’t like him, but then I hated everything about that film.
