Schitt’s Creek breakout star and Emmy winner Annie Murphy is stepping out of the comedy’s heartwarming setting straight into the world of dark humor. She leads AMC’s upcoming Kevin Can F**k Himself, from the point-of-view of a classic sitcom wife, the kind who has notoriously been taken for granted.

Murphy plays Allison McRoberts, who is married to man-child Kevin McRoberts (Eric Petersen), who proclaims “I’m the gift that keeps on giving, baby,” at the start of a new trailer that The A.V. Club is exclusively premiering below. Allison is fed up of her life, her ingrate husband, and daydreams that she’s stabbing him in the neck, which is when the trailer takes a visibly deadly turn.

Created by Valerie Armstrong and produced by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, Kevin Can F**k Himself will oscillate between its sitcom-style jokes and more darker tones as Allison grapples with the toxic masculinity she deals with on a daily basis and decides to take control of her narrative, a plan that clearly involves her friend Patty (Mary Hollis Inboden), reconnecting with an ex, Sam (Richard Lee), and possibly killing Kevin. No big deal.

Kevin Can F**k Himself is a nice little nod to Kevin Can Wait, the CBS sitcom that ran from 2016 to 2018 and starred Kevin James. It came under fire when, after its first season, series’ star Erinn Hayes was abruptly fired and replaced by James’ The King Of Queens co-star Leah Remini. Hayes played the sitcom wife, who was clearly considered as disposable after just one season for a possible ratings ploy.

The AMC comedy will also star Kevin Chapman, Meghan Leathers, Alex Bonifer, Justin Grace, and Candice Coke.

The eight-episode first season will premiere on AMC+ Sunday, June 13 with two episodes, both of which will then air back-to-back on AMC on Sunday, June 20 beginning at 9 p.m. ET. The remaining episodes will continue to debut on AMC+ one week prior to their cable airings on AMC.

How do you claim exclusivity on a youtube video you’re linking to?

I am looking forward to this show because I hear it’s a little bit Alexis

I am looking forward to her critically reviewed, limited reality series

    • kencerveny-av says:

From her limited reality series. La-la-lala-la-la-la-la!

    • dirtside-av says:

I watched the first three or four episodes of Schitt’s Creek. I can see it has promise but so far I haven’t found myself particularly excited to catch another episode. Should I bother?

      • coatituesday-av says:

        You should.

      • dj1973-av says:

Yes.  It takes a few episodes for it to pick up but it is so so worth it.  It’s wonderful.

      • anthonystrand-av says:

It clicked for me towards the end of season 10. Maybe episode 9 or 10. I ended up really loving it.“It’s Okay, She’s His Sister” is the low point of that series by far.

        • dinoironbodya-av says:

Funny you should say that about “It’s Okay, She’s His Sister”, since the title drop is probably one of my favorite funny moments in the whole series.

        • tampabeeatch-av says:

It doesn’t click until the end of season TEN??? I didn’t know there were that many seasons.

      • Ad_absurdum_per_aspera-av says:

Many people have asked this question. You’re still in the show’s rather superficial origins as broad farce. Hard to pinpoint just where it starts getting better (and ultimately much, much better), but I’d imagine that if you stay with it through the first half-dozen episodes you’ll be in for the whole thing. (Sort of a presumably inadvertent metaphor for the characters in their new home.)

        • coatituesday-av says:

Hard to pinpoint just where it starts getting better That’s a good observation. I’m not sure where/when it clicked for me. I kept watching because the Levy/O’Hara combo is always good. Gradually I started to notice how effortlessly Annie Murphy and Dan Levy turned their roles into characters I really cared about and liked. I imagine that was the plan all along, it’s a low-key, low-stakes Canadian show. It works really well as a whole, so.. yeah, stick with it. (Almost all of the secondary roles are well cast and well acted too.)

          • Ad_absurdum_per_aspera-av says:

(Almost all of the secondary roles are well cast and well acted too.) Emily Hampshire wordlessly reacting in the background as a spectator on somebody else’s personal dramas can be funnier than some entire shows.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I also love her ongoing references to her bizarre family.“‘Get out of here, you stupid broad!’ That’s another thing my stepdad would say.”

          • snagglepluss-av says:

I think it’s the conversation about “wine”between David and Stevie. It’s a really smart  conversation that starts adding dimensions to some of the characters.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

The guy who plays Bob is fantastic. I love his weird arm-swinging semi-run as he enters scenes.

          • dog-in-a-bowl-av says:

The Bob Jog is hilarious every single time.

          • almightyajax-av says:

The second season finale, “Happy Anniversary,” has one of my all-time favorite stand-up-and-speak-the-truth-to-shitty-people scenes, but I was hooked much earlier. The hardest part of those really early episodes for me is how awful Moira is. I think it’s episode 3 or 4 where she finally does something unselfish for someone she loves. But one of the things I really love about the show is that Johnny never lets their dynamic become too Lucy-and-Ricky — he is always supportive of her, and isn’t just humoring her more fanciful ideas while privately rolling his eyes or cutting her down to others. He honestly believes she’s an incredible talent and he’s lucky to have her in his life, even when she’s behaving like a spoiled child, a drama queen, or a conceited jerk. That eventually forms the template for David’s first successful relationship as well — he finds someone who loves him exactly as he is (difficult, demanding, and with a very high opinion of himself, yet fragile underneath it all) and it pays off beautifully at the end of the series.

          • 555-2323-av says:

            queen, or a conceited jerk.
I almost wrote “good observation, I didn’t notice this”, but more properly … the Levy/O’Hara pairing is so perfectly acted and written (bolstered by, of course, them knowing each other/working together since they were in their 20s) that his love of her is just natural and never falls into, as you say, Lucy-and-Ricky territory.Oh – and it was a good observation, and you tying it into David’s relationship is spot on. And it makes me want to binge the whole show again. (And – I know nothing of the Levy father and son [and daughter] relationship in real life, but it looks like the show was an absolute joy for them to work on.One more thing – Stevie’s Cabaret triumph, that last bit, whe she sings “Maybe This Time”… was some of the most perfect television writing, acting and music I’ve ever seen. The sheer joy on her face, combined with… I don’t know, relief with a touch of chutzpah? was amazing.

          • almightyajax-av says:

Emily Hampshire portrayed two of my favorite characters in TV in the last half-decade: Stevie Budd on Schitt’s Creek, and Jennifer Goines on 12 Monkeys. The two roles couldn’t be more different, but she is fantastic in both, bringing very complex and challenging characters to life in very different contexts. She’s such a fantastic performer!

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

If you watch ‘Best Wishes, Warm Regards’ (a behind the scenes special put out after the final episode), you can see some of the Levy family dynamic, and it’s just as sweet and supportive as you’d hope.

      • amoralpanic-av says:

It’s pleasant enough but inessential through most of the first season, and then it becomes something more as the characters deepen and the show figures out that it needs to dial back Chris Elliott like 60%.

        • skibo91-av says:

Roland going from primary antagonist to friendly village idiot was maybe the best decision in a show that got a lot of decisions right.

      • snagglepluss-av says:

It’s one of those sitcoms that fall into the category of good comfort food. It’s a pleasant watch, funny and smart but not too smart, The four lead characters are all Hall of Fame sitcom characters. Alexis (Annie Murphy) is sneakily the best.

      • chuk1-av says:

Yeah, it takes a while to get going but maybe season 3 or 4 onward are great.

        • gojirashei2-av says:

I was enjoying the show just fine, but the ending of Season 2 (starting with Johnny’s speech about the town to his old friends) was where I really fell in love with it.

      • snagglepluss-av says:

Another way of putting it is that if you stick with it, the whole joke involving “a little bit Alexis” will be one of the funniest couple of minutes you’ll see

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Please do. From what I’ve gleaned of you from the comments section, I think you’ll appreciate the blend of wickedly sharp humour and genuine heart that the show creates after a shaky first season. Plus Catherine O’Hara is just sensational all the way through.

      • mrwaldojeffers-av says:

Yes- it took a few episodes for the show to find its footing, but once it hadsthe characters figured out, you’ll see why it won so many awards.

      • blindlemonchitlin-av says:

        noIt sucked

      • gumbercules1-av says:

It takes about 8 or 9 episodes for them to find their footing. A lot of the early episodes have more confrontational humor (everything with Chris Elliott), but it shifts focus to everyone being legitimately good people while still being a comedy, and it’s just a fully uplifting series.

      • moonrivers-av says:

No. I kept watching – for Seasons! – hoping it would be funny at any point, or the knock-off Curb Your Enthusiasm music stings would be less annoying, etc etc – but nope. Despite everyone’s protestations to otherwise, it never gets better, more engaging, or funny (which is bad for a comedy!)Of course, your mileage may vary

      • real-taosbritdan-av says:

Season one can be a struggle st times but once you get through it the rest of thge show has some truly golden moments.

      • aplus1234-av says:

You won’t regret it – now get back in there! (slaps shoulder)

      • listen2themotto-av says:

The first season is a little shaky but push through it. It really hits its stride in season 2.

      • sonicoooahh-av says:

Once they become characters, Schitt’s Creek becomes great.

      • tampabeeatch-av says:

Same here. All my friends are completely mad about it, and I love the cast except….. I’ve always had an awful visceral reaction to Chris Elliot and I just am struggling to get past him.

        • dirtside-av says:

I like Chris Elliot but I really don’t like his character (grotesque, obstructionist hayseed). Apparently he becomes less annoying later on though.

          • tampabeeatch-av says:

Thanks. One of my best friends is obsessed and it makes him so sad that I haven’t watched it so we can talk about it. Knowing that character maybe isn’t as prominent or repulsive might make me get through it.

      • akabrownbear-av says:

Yes – I also had a hard time trying to get through the first season but once you get familiar with the characters and their mannerisms, it becomes really fun to watch.

      • lmh325-av says:

Yes, it takes a little bit of time for it to truly hit its stride, but it gets there and then it’s great!

    • dremiliortlizardo-av says:

BooHoo. Woke SJWs. Men are so mean that the world revolves around them abd you are just cum receptacles. Everything is rape when all you offer the world is you cunt. Be better. • facebones-av says:

The only way I could be more excited for this series would be if they had cast Kevin James or Jim Belushi.

    • djmc-av says:

Mark Addy, who managed to play this archetype in both a comedy (Still Standing) AND a drama (Game of Thrones).

    • anthonystrand-av says:

This guy, Eric Peterson, was Kirstie Alley’s son on her terrible TV Land sitcom Kirstie, a show that also featured Rhea Perlman and Michael Richards in its main cast.

      • coatituesday-av says:

        • sadieadie-av says:

I love that the best pull quote they could find was from the New York Daily News

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

That also sounds like a quote that might have been snipped from a longer sentence. Something like, “Despite great comedic chemistry…”

          • anthonystrand-av says:

“Alley and Perlman show no sign of their great comedic chemistry from Cheers”

          • 95feces-av says:

Yeah, if you don’t have the balls to drop “Fuck” in your title don’t pretended like you dropped “Fuck” in your title.

I’ll watch Annie Murphy in any show that has a modified swear word in the title.

      • tobias-lehigh-nagy-av says:

Maybe on her next show she can portray a character called Philomena Phuck and the show’s title can be For Phuck’s Sake.

        • dremiliortlizardo-av says:

I am talking about every SJW Mary Sue story that tries to frame a woman failing as somehow a man’s fault and not the fact the were not good enough or had nothing else to offer. That is why Mare of Easttown is somewhat successful. They call out Mare for being a whirlwind of destruction and blaming everyone else for her shitty life. Though again, all those girls whoring on sidedoor was always someone elses fault and never their own. And everyone loves me, except my mom.

          • tobias-lehigh-nagy-av says:

Except that this is a thread on an article about the Annie Murphy show Kevin Can F**k Himself. So, again, what in the fuck are you talking about?

          • dremiliortlizardo-av says:

Did you not read the premise of the fucking show, retard. This SJW cunt “Allison is fed up of her life, her ingrate husband, and daydreams that she’s stabbing him in the neck” She literally feels she has the right to murder someone she perceives as not attractive enough for her and as somehow holding her back, instead of leaving and taking personal responsibility and finding her own way in life.

        • dead-elvis-av says:

And aren’t you that person that everybody hates? That’s it, the smooth-brained racist fuckstick.Best to flag & dismiss; you’ll never have any sort of good-faith engagement with it.

Annie Murphy is incredible, Alexis on Schitt’s Creek had perhaps the greatest character arc in TV history. So I can’t very well not watch this

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I love how the place she ends up is almost a complete 180 from where she started, and yet the change feels absolutely earned and true.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

  • socratessaovicente-av says:

Glad to see her getting work. She had the hardest job to land of the ‘Schitt’s Creek’ core cast – everyone else was essentially irreplaceable – and absolutely nailed it from Season 1 to the finale. Looking forward to seeing what she does in the coming decade.
