After two-and-a-half years of jokes on podcasts and Twitter about actor Jay Johnston’s participation in the January 6 insurrection, the FBI has arrested Johnston, charging him with felony obstruction of officers and several misdemeanors, according to NBC News.

Johnston’s alleged participation in the riots has become a hot topic of conversation within the comedy world. In addition to being a whispered in-joke on the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast, Johnston was banned from appearing on Bob’s Burgers in December 2021. Johnston previously voiced Jimmy Pesto, Sr., on the animated series.

In March 2021, the FBI tweeted photos of a man, inspiring comedy fans around the world to post, “Holy shit, is that Jay Johnston?” Later that year, speaking to the director of one of Johnston’s latest projects, The Daily Beast reported the actor’s presence in the riots that killed seven, injured and traumatized hundreds, and threatened to overthrow the U.S. government. “I asked him about it,” said Lucas Astrom, the director of the indie comedy Wing Dad, “and he said like, yeah, he was there, and he believed there was fraud and just wanted to show his support.”

The Daily Beast reported what could easily be assumed about pretty much anyone wrapped up in the riots, with Johnston’s friends and colleagues telling the website that he had fallen down the right-wing rabbit hole in recent years. As is typically the case, those close to Johnston told The Daily Beast that his interest in extremist politics coincided with serious personal issues, leading him to the ugliest locations online, including an appearance on Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes’ show in 2015.

Before ruining his life by waging war against woke mind virus, Johnston had an envious filmography of roles in some of the most influential comedies ever, including Mr. Show, Arrested Development, The Sarah Silverman Program, and Bob’s Burgers.

They just need to lean into it and hire Huey Lewis to voice Pesto.

Is Trev gonna take over Pesto’s Pizzeria?

    • beadgirl-av says:

That would be hard to explain with Jimmy Jr. and the twins still around, unless they introduce their mother.

      • nostalgic4thecta-av says:

Just say Pesto abandoned his family to explore his Neapolitan heritage. Bob could really use a win.

I’m a few seasons behind on Bob’s Burgers, do they just not have Jimmy Pesto around in the new episodes or did they recast him?

        • rsqcom-av says:

He didn’t show up this season. They certainly haven’t had anyone else cast in the role yet.

        • kittysneezes-av says:

He doesn’t show up at all. The twins/Jimmy Jr. are still around, but presumably their dad is busy doing stuff that doesn’t involve storming the capitol.

          • lit-porgs-av says:

I think they only spoke one once this whole past season. I noticed a lot less focus on the other kids at school, which I’m fine with. Never liked them anyway.

        • thelionelhutz-av says:

In the movie, he was just in the background once, no speaking lines. Not in the show since 2021. I would think that they would recast if they need him, but the character had become tired as it is (nothing against Johnston’s acting, the writers had run out of ideas a while ago for him and Bob’s conflict).

          • badkuchikopi-av says:

They recast someone for the movie, Hader’s character? It was really jarring.

          • captainbubb-av says:

Yeah, I think that’s a character they could just cut. The interactions with him are among my least favorite parts of the show. Mostly they were funny for other people’s reactions, like seeing how desperate Bob would be to show him up or how desperate Trev would be to get his approval.

Honestly, I wish that were true, but it’s not. Behind the Bastards did an excellent podcast on how YouTube’s algorithm does this: it literally almost seduces people with gentle content, then more extreme content, then to crazy…it’s a step-by-step process, and you really can start out kinda ok and end up nuts in QAnon. If you’re not the brightest bulb to begin with, I would guess it’s easier still, but pretty much every content engine on the web is designed to slowly pull even smart people to extremes, because extreme people spend way more time clicking and add up to way more ad revenue. It’s fucking grim, and the only way to guard against it is to be aware of it. I don’t think most people really understand that the internet is not their friend.

an excellent podcast on how YouTube’s algorithm does this: it literally almost seduces people with gentle content, then more extreme content, then to crazyHorseshit. The algorithm suggests the videos, but you have to click on them yourself. I’ve seen some of those same videos come up on my YouTube feed. I just didn’t click on them.

I’ve never really used YouTube except to watch SNL, so I honestly don’t know: I thought unless you choose otherwise, it autoplays the next thing? If that’s incorrect, please let me know, but otherwise I can see a lot of people leaving it on like shitty hopeless TV back in the day.

          • i-miss-splinter-av says:

I thought unless you choose otherwise, it autoplays the next thing?

You can turn that off, and even if you don’t, there’s still about 10-15 seconds before another video starts to autoplay when you can cancel it. The next video that autoplays will be related to the video you just watched, which means you have to start the “chain” yourself by clicking on one of these videos. So you don’t go down that rabbit hole without taking the first steps yourself.Think of it this way: I can’t just sneak up behind you and tie you up with a rope, because you’ll resist being tied up. The only way I can tie you up is if you allow me to tie you up.

          • gargsy-av says:

Video 1: “You agree with A [some entirely reasonable thing], right?”
          You: “Well yeah.”
Video 2: “If you agree with A, you’ll certainly agree with B [some other generally reasonable thing].”
          You: “Sounds about right.”
Video 3: “The thing that sucks about B – it’s great, but some people don’t like it and want to get rid of it, and that makes me sad.”
You: “Huh that kind of sucks.”
Video 4: “I am getting increasingly mad about B being attacked and also you agree with C, right?”
You: “Guess I kind of do.”

Video 17: “Jews are pushing the conspiracy that the Earth is round and they’re going to force your kids to be trans, so time to start killin’.”

          • ignatiusreillysvalve-av says:

This is pretty much exactly how BTB painted the progression. Each video is a gentle nudge further along, and for people who aren’t great critical thinkers, I think it’s got to be seductive to gradually believe that you’re learning “secrets” no one else knows. Used to be these kinds of people would just read Dan Brown’s books and never shut up about them, but this is much more dangerous.

        • timebobby-av says:

Wow. You didn’t click on videos? Someone award this man the medal of honor.

        • MWarnerM-av says:

Not only that, but you also have to choose to believe the crazy things you see online. YouTube isn’t some magic memory wiping / brainwashing machine that overrides your critical thinking skills and forces you to accept anything you see on the screen as fact against your will. If you’re an adult who got radicalized by a bunch of alt-right YouTube videos, it’s because you wanted to believe what they were telling you and you didn’t want to check the veracity of it.

      • ginnyweasley-av says:

I watch only queer, feminist, fashion, and make-up videos on youtube. I have been offered the worst most bigoted things imaginable in the suggestions area. Same with Facebook. This is 100% purposeful to radicalize people into voting GOP to benefit the wealthy who own these companies and to also keep them on the “outrage pipeline” for ad impressions. With GOP leadership these companies and wealthy get less taxes, less regulations, less democratic action against them, more entitlements, etc. In capitalism, profit and power are the only goals, and this method gets them both. In capitalism, if genocide becomes profitable then capitalists will attempt genocide. Its a philosophy with zero ethics. So yes, people absolutely do get forced down this rabbit-hole. These companies understand the psychology of outrage and manipulation. After a while if all you see is how evil liberals, racial minorities, queers, and Muslims are then eventually you’ll internalize it. From a profit making perspective it must pay off well. Imagine not only getting ad impressions from all this outrage but also benefiting at the polls as well. This is why all social media pushes right-wing narratives and platforms right-wing bigots, as long as they don’t cross some red-lines. Note how much Twitter does this and what the main motivations of Elon buying it must have been.

      • laurenceq-av says:

I watched one, ONE Joe Rogan video because he was interviewing Leah Remini about Scientology and my Youtube recommendations the following days were appalling. I had to block, block, block to purge all taht shit from my feed. It’s definitely designed to turn people evil.

        • dudull-av says:

You’re lucky. I’ve block any video containing Joe Rogan or Andrew Tate shit, even reported them as missinformation, and YT still recommend those video every day. And sports… wtf I just watch a video when Charles Barkley got ping pong ball drop on his head and suddenly every sports from soccer, baseball and cricket recomended on my video.

          • laurenceq-av says:

Ugh, sorry to hear.  But, yeah, it’s no mystery how people get radicalized in no time thanks to the sinister, shitty algorithm.

          • gargsy-av says:

Fuck you, you don’t get to blame the algorithm for SHITTY PEOPLE being SHITTY PEOPLE.

        • i-miss-splinter-av says:

You just proved my point: You chose not to click on those videos. The algorithm suggested them, but you chose not to click.

          • killa-k-av says:

That’s not how a rabbit hole works. The whole point is that social media algorithms subtly and incrementally push you toward certain material by recommending similar videos. It doesn’t start with clicking on an Andrew Tate video. It usually starts with something innocuous in a certain genre or videos about a certain broad topic, and ends with a YouTuber telling you the deep state is real and that there’s no way Joe Biden won the election. But unless you know to stay away from that type of content, it’s hard to realize you’re being radicalized. That’s why it works.

        • gargsy-av says:

“It’s definitely designed to turn people evil.”

No, it fucking isn’t. YOU clicked on a Joe Rogan podcast ABOUT Scientology. YouTube made recommendations based on what YOU clicked on.

      • dr-darke-av says:

Gee, my YouTube Autoplay bounces from Linus’s Tech Tips to Red Letter Media to LegalEagle to Todd in the Shadows to Defunctland to Wha Happun? to….Every time there’s something political on YouTube I tend to avoid it even when it’s from Devin J. Stone, mostly because he doesn’t think Hillary deserves to be sued for sounding like Joe Fucking McCarthy!

      • nurser-av says:

But there is a choice—you don’t get a shock from the keyboard if you fail to click on a video. The algorithm works with thousands of video content examples, right? You, as a viewer have to keep feeding certain choices for the output to get less diverse. I’ve watched film essayists for a time, then switched to comedy clips, then to film shorts—it only takes a few clicks with similar subject matter to get it adjusted to your new interest.

        • killa-k-av says:

But that assumes that you know how to stay away from extremist material. Not everyone knows how the algorithm works or how extreme the consequences can be. Like, take your example. It’s not terribly likely that watching film shorts will result in being fed videos about election denial or the deep state. But film essays? It’s easy to keep clicking on videos about film essays with eyegrabbing titles and amusing thumbnails, until you end up on one that spends a liiiittle more time than usual talking about the identity politics on the film. And then the algorithm subtly starts suggesting more and more extreme right wing videos. So yeah, there’s a choice. Of course there’s a choice. But to claim that it’s not an uninformed choice seems intellectually dishonest to me.

        • pearlnyx-av says:

It works the same with Pornhub.

…it’s a step-by-step process, and you really can start out kinda ok and end up nuts in QAnon.Sure, maybe if you’re a kid this works. If you mean Behind the Bastards; I do strongly recommend it. I learn a lot of history that I’m never otherwise going to sit down and read about, and the caster cites all of his sources (which are legit…history books and periodicals you’ve actually heard of). About the YouTube podcast…now I have no idea if they’re right or not. I’m still not convinced that everyone CHOOSES to go down the rabbit hole. If you’re a moron using the internet, YouTube is pretty much custom-designed to take you there.

    • MWarnerM-av says:

This. Nobody “falls” down the alt-right rabbit hole. You crawl down there of your own free will. It’s a choice, not gravity. Saying that somebody “fell” into it sounds like an attempt to absolve them of responsibility.

      • i-miss-splinter-av says:

Saying that somebody “fell” into it sounds like an attempt to absolve them of responsibility.

That’s exactly what it is. “I was taken in!” Oh shut up. You wanted to be taken in.

      • popculturesurvivor-av says:

You choose to click, but nobody starts out saying, “I wanna end up some weirdo who alienates his family by going on about a batshit crazy satanic conspiracy involving the British Royal Family and some random furniture merchant.” But people cannot always foresee the outcome of every one of their actions. Losing your mind is sometimes a process of slow accretion. You can’t blame the algorithm for everything, but I think that it does contribute.  Not every addict starts out this way, but it’s an okay parallel: nobody says “I wanna end up turning tricks or shoplifting for dope money” when they steal their first Percocet out of their grandpa’s medicine cabinet, but that’s where a lot of people end up. And that’s a choice, too. But only sort of.

        • i-miss-splinter-av says:

Not every addict starts out this way

Yes, every addict starts out this way. You have to choose to start using in the first place.

          • mungosantamaria-av says:

That’s a shockingly naive misunderstanding of how addiction actually works but okay.

          • popculturesurvivor-av says:

Considering the amount of things that one can get addicted to (shopping, video games, alcohol, sex, food, sleep, the list goes on) that “you never should have drunk your first beer or taken that first pill” seems extremely unrealistic. Some people experiment and decide it’s not for them, some people can handle their shit, and others become addicts. You wanna go ahead and live your life like some straight-edge hard-on? Go for it. But it’s simply not realistic to expect the whole of humanity to live that way. That’s not the way that humans are built. Save for the Inuit/Eskimos, there is not a single culture on earth that doesn’t get fucked up on something. It is the way that humans are built.

          • dresstokilt-av says:

Tell that to the millions of Americans who became opioid addicts because their doctors prescribed it to them with zero warnings.

“I guess I made the choice to be a junkie when my leg was crushed in that industrial accident.”

          • dr-darke-av says:

Not that I want to give doctors a free ride on that one? But Purdue Pharmaceuticals kept claiming that Oxycotin was non-addictive long after evidence to the contrary starting popping up everywhere. Same as Bayer claimed at the end of the 19th Century/start of the 20th Century that Heroin was perfectly safe, and would help cure people of morphine and cocaine addictions….

          • i-miss-splinter-av says:

When the pain eventually stops, and you continue taking the pills, that’s a choice. I get why people make that choice, but it is a choice.

          • dresstokilt-av says:

Ahh yes, I forgot that opioids are not at all addicting and have no side effects when you stop using them.

Seriously, educate yourself before you start saying that millions of people just chose to be junkies.

    • sirslud-av says:

The phrase exists for a reason. Wrong thinking does not pop out of a magical portal. The most successful way of changing somebody’s mind is to start small on grounds of consensus and slowly move away. Some people may be more predisposed to have their views changed, but nobody except for the crazy dude shrieking on the corner begins his sales pitch with “9/11 was aliens!” Your framing is just what intellectually lazy people do because they need a simple world where Bad people are Bad, Good people are Good, and they were Always This Way, and The End *dusts off hands*.

One thing I don’t get was that like a million people confirmed it was him and he is only arrested now? With Bob’s meat. At the end Fischoeder reveals that Bob was on a high but rent controlled lease and that while he’s spent far more propping up Pesto’s shitty restaurant than he’ll ever get back in higher rents driving Bob to financial and personal ruin was almost funny enough to make it worth it. “But”, he says “as it is this building will become intensely flammable just after sundown so everyone needs to vacate the premises immediately. Thank God for insurance.”

*past regular having a single tear while reading this comment* you have no idea what this place once was.

        • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I’m sick in bed all week I figured I’d come check it out.

        • lucilletwostep-av says:

Didn’t it used to be so good, so fun!?!!! I miss the old AV Club.

        • ghostbuggy-av says:

(Clears throat, everyone turns to see the old man with gray hair in the back of the room)I was there. I saw it. Horsefellow. Dawes. Tarkovsky’s Former AD. I saw it all.

    • captainbubb-av says:

Wait… what? Agree with the first part, but don’t understand the second for comment about Fischoeders being arrested (and Bob’s Burgers hate?!?). Did I miss that Kevin Kline, Zach Galifianakis, and David Wain were also at the insurrection?

      • dudebra-av says:

I said the writers could have the characters arrested. Bob’s Burgers is thankfully a work of fiction.

      • mortbrewster-av says:

Kevin Kline should be shunned and arrested for keeping us from having more Phoebe Cates movies, like Drop Dead Fred II: Deadder Fredder.

      • mifrochi-av says:

What can you say, dude just considers an arrest a good punchline. Maybe the only good punchline.

        • captainbubb-av says:

Right? Still don’t understand what the Fischoeders have to do with anything, but wasn’t sure further explanation would make this clearly hilarious joke funny.

    • teddyray-av says:

I think Bob’s Burgers is funny, but I agree with everything else you said.

    • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

If the writers of the consistently unfunny Bob’s Burgers Dude, don’t throw Bob’s Burgers under that bus. They fired the dude, and the show has a ton of heart.

    • TRT-X-av says:

Yeah, Jan 6th is perhaps one of the best demonstrations of white privilege you’ll ever see in the modern era.No way that big a crowd of anything other than white people would have been allowed to get that close to the capitol, let alone walk out alive once they stormed it.

  • disqusdrew-av says:

Can they please recast Jimmy Pesto already? I need an episode where Bob gets a glorious win over him.

  • mykinjaa-av says:

    That mustache confirms it.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

This is a sad, sad day.

Another small victory for true freedom and democracy and against Republican fascism and criminality. Peace.

  • mexican-prostate-av says:

I mean, this isn’t surprising considering he played a cop in like, the vast majority of appearances he had on tv.

  • monsterenergyqueef-av says:

They are still racking up arrests. And what kills me is most of these people had GREAT successful lives yet were convinced that their lives were in jeopardy by things that do not effect them in any way possible. It happened to a friend of mine, too.   He said these words “immigrants are going to destroy our way of life”.   And I asked how, which upset him.

    • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

Yeah, questions tend to upset fascists

    • gargsy-av says:

“And what kills me is most of these people had GREAT successful lives”

THAT’s your takeaway from watching those mobs of mouth-breathing incels, all painted up and chanting and wearing animal heads? You thought most of those people had great lives?

How -and this is an honest question, so I *would* like an answer- fucking unbelievably stupid are you?

If Paul F. Thompkins ever turns out to be anything but a great guy I will kill myself.

    • ignatiusreillysvalve-av says:

Was just thinking this exact thing. (I’m not a fan of his shows but I’m a RiffTrax and Behind the Bastards junkie and I love PFT based on his work there). I will not be able to bear it if we get one these about him.

  • pbug56-av says:

Arrested Development is his excuse!  Hey, I’m sure he has lots of fans in whatever prison he ends up in.

  • frasier-crane-av says:

Herky-Jerkying off to join the the prison Choo-Choo!!

  • kevinkap-av says:

I’ve had drinks with Gavin McInnes before and he is an incredibly boring person, I don’t know how these people go and interact with him and think he is profound. I met him before he started the “Proud Boys”. I still do miss Jimmy Pesto Sr. on “Bob’s Burgers” I really want to hear ZOOM! again.

  • sayheykid80-av says:

Even if he’s convicted, he’ll probably just receive a pardon from President Guy “Whitey” Corngood.

  • joeinthebox66-av says:

I should have expected more from Choo-Choo, The Herky Jerky Dancer.

Who else from Mr. Show is a right wing terrorist? I don’t trust Blueberry Head.

  • mattthewsedlar-av says:

As a Mr. Show fan, this bums me out. I thought it was a joke that the guy looked like him. Never realized the joke was that it was actually him.

  • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

Fuck fascists to hell, every last one of them. Yes, that one too. They want to kill and subjugate people I love, so they get nothing but shit. Seriously
But this is a fucking bummer. I hung out with him a few times in like 2014, and he was SO COOL. It was exactly how you’d want it to be hanging out with someone from two of your favorite shows. But he went fash so off he goes.

    • wakemein2024-av says:

The three biggest knee-jerk conservative, build the wall, Fuck Joe Biden guys I know are all more than capable of being extremely friendly, even compassionate. More than liberal me, frankly. Just don’t bring up politics.

      • TRT-X-av says:

Fuck Joe BidenNo no. It’s “FJB” or “Let’s Go Brandon” because the hardspitters of truth who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is are too cowardly to actually drop an F-bomb.

      • badkuchikopi-av says:

If knee-jerk conservative “build the wall” and “fuck Biden” guys are more liberal than you, you’re probably not very liberal.

    • gargsy-av says:

“It was exactly how you’d want it to be hanging out with someone from two of your favorite shows.”

So, he pretended to like you?

  • blazedomingo-av says:

    Actual footage of the interrogation:

  • amessagetorudy-av says:

He already had Hank Dotsons’ Mini-mart and C0untry. What more did he want?

  • nimitdesai-av says:

Johnston had an envious filmography of roles in some of the most influential comedies ever, including Mr. Show, Arrested Development, The Sarah Silverman Program, and Bob’s Burgers.Yeah, but he’s not really important to any of them lol every single one of those shows could have replaced him with Jason Siegel and it would have been exactly the same.

  • cho24-av says:

So the development is his arrest.

  • freedomisnon-negotiable-av says:

the riots did not “Kill seven”, that’s a blatant lie

  • soonandso4th-av says:

I was a huge fan of him mostly from this unaired Mr Show sketch
