What started with a pair of broken glasses has now blossomed into the kind of baroque, impossibly cute art project one might expect from a Zooey Deschanel character, if not Zooey herself. Artist Sandra Suárez is in the midst of an undertaking the 365 Masks Project, which involves making almost oppressively whimsical cardboard masks for each day of the year. “I had a pair of broken glasses at home,” the artist explains, “and I decided to give them a second life by transforming them into a piece of art.” This being the 2010s and the Internet, many of said masks are rooted in popular culture. She’s made masks inspired by The Simpsons, Futurama, The Smurfs, Toy Story, Looney Tunes, and more. Classic cartoon characters like Popeye, Betty Boop, and Woody Woodpecker have also been appropriated along the way. All can be seen on Instagram. There is no complicated rationale behind the 365 Masks Project. “I just want [to] make others smile,” the artist declares. Among the less obvious entries in the series are a quartet of masks based on the The Big Bang Theory. No New Girl masks as of yet, though.
