Award season is in full swing, and with that comes the nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards. This year Denis Villeneuve’s Dune leads the nominations with 11, sweeping the technical categories.

Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog follows close behind with 8 nominations, primarily in directing and acting categories. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and have all earned nominations for their acting in the slow-burn Western. Smit-McPhee also received a nomination in the public-voted Rising Star Award.

Other films that received multiple nominations include Kenneth Branagh’s coming-of-age drama Belfast, which has received six noms. Daniel Craig’s final performance as Bond in No Time to Die earned five nods, alongside Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

While Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter snagged a few nominations, with Jessie Buckley earning one for her supporting performance, Olivia Colman did not receive a nomination in the main acting category. Another notable snub is Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, as it appears the Brits were not too impressed with Kristen Stewart’s performance as Lady Di.

This year’s list of first-time nominees includes Will Smith, as he earns a nod for his role as Venus and Serena Williams’ father in King Richard. Renate Reinsve has also received her first nomination for her debut leading performance as Julie in the Swedish feature The Worst Person In The World. Alana Haim has also been nominated for her debut acting appearance in PTA’s Licorice Pizza.

Thought Dunst should have a nomination for Best Actress as well for Power of the Dog. Heartbreaking watching the playful twinkle dwindle from her eyes as the movie progresses.

    • rogar131-av says:

Agreed. That movie was terrific, and all four leads deserve to be nominated, for vastly different approaches to character that amazingly belong in the same movie, which is of course because Jane Campion can do anything.

The Best Actress race this year has been a rollercoaster! For months Kristen Stewart had been seen as an absolute lock for Spencer, but with the shocking snub at the SAGs and the slightly less shocking snub here (Prince William is the organization’s president and nominations for a movie about Princess Diana played by an American was never going to be a given) means she might be out entirely. The nomination process at the BAFTAs is a little quirky, but Olivia Coleman not getting in is also pretty surprising. Nicole Kidman had been surging due to her win at the Globes, but missed here, too.As of now it looks like Lady Gaga might actually be the frontrunner (or at least much more of a contender than I previously thought). She’s the only leading actress to be nominated at all the major shows and she won at the New York Film Critics Circle. I thought she was fabulous in House of Gucci (the movie was otherwise mostly a mess), but I’m also a longtime fan, so take it with a grain of salt./End ramblings of an awards season nerd

WTF are BAFTA thinking going so big on the fun but ridiculous Don’t Look Up? DiCaprio seems to get nominated by default these days. Sorry not to see Lost Daughter getting more love as I really rated that film. Gyllenhaal got a writing nod but no director nom or Colman? Surprised Branagh missed out too.

The Power of the Dog is one of those movies that I remember being good, but that I don’t remember enjoying and that I don’t ever plan to watch again.

Just put a fiver on Power of the Dog to win the Best Picture Oscar.
