Every month, a deluge of new books comes flooding out from big publishers, indie houses, and self-publishing platforms. To help you navigate the wave of titles arriving in October, The A.V. Club has narrowed down the options to 10 books we’re most excited about, including a collection of hundreds of photographs chronicling David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era, a ninth autobiographical outing from Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner; and the tumultuous memoirs of Fresh Off The Boat star Constance Wu.

You may know from t, or , or the Twitterverse’s enraged reaction to her 2019 tweets about FOTB’s unexpected sixth-season renewal. (She’d been planning to start other projects and was upset at the thought of missing out on them.) The drove her to her fifth-floor balcony, where she became frightened of what she might do; a friend found her and got her to a hospital. This is the incident most readers will be aware of, but Wu doesn’t linger on it in her memoir (“I never actually wanted to kill myself”), and instead focuses on growing and moving past it. From her childhood in Virginia to her Hollywood success, Wu shares the stories that made her her, including how she finally stood up to a handsy producer, though she never reported his behavior (which she regrets). She’s open about sex, even when it comes to difficult memories. Wu is a smart and entertaining writer, but gossip hounds may starve; she doesn’t name names, or she changes them, unless the story is positive. (Randall Park sounds like a pretty nice human, by the way.)

Midway through the premiere of his one-man show in 2012, he shat(nered?) his pants […] Not all the material here is freshIt sure wasn’t! Good night, and be sure to tip your waitresses!

I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I like the retro vibe of Constance Wu’s book cover.

I have Moonage Daydream. It is excellent.

Do they talk about all the children that Bowie groomed and raped?    I’m sure there are some fun stories about what a great sexual predator Bowie was.

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Yes, it’s all about that. Every word.

        • charliemeadows69420-av says:

Seems like you Bowie fans really like how Bowie raped those children.   You scumbags really seem eager to defend his indefensible rapes of children.

          • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

And John Lennon slapped his wife. Is your rage boner exploding now?

          • charliemeadows69420-av says:

Great defense of how Bowie rapes children.  You are really smart.

          • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

and you are slow-footed buffalo walking the path of the coyote. Get out of the road, stupid.

          • charliemeadows69420-av says:

David Bowie raped children.    You should get a moral compass and stop defending evil pedophiles because you like their music.   Loser.

      • markagrudzinski-av says:

“All” the children? Your choice of the word “groomed” has a nice ring of Fox News hysteria about it. From my knowledge there’s a single case. Lori Mattix, who may have been 15 at the time, was part of an infamous collection of Sunset Strip groupies. Even she says it was consensual. Your pearl clutching and exaggeration is ridiculous.

        • charliemeadows69420-av says:

How can a child consent to having sex with an adult?   You scumbag idiot.

        • hallofreallygood-av says:

I’m all for calling out the dorks who parrot “grooming” because it’s what the television told them to say, but you do understand how even that one incident is incredibly bad, and that it’s impossible for a 15 year old to give consent to an adult, correct?I like Bowie’s music too, but that’s a real problem

          • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

People are different on how they mature intellectually and emotionally. Laws give particular ages for consent, for voting, for drinking, for driving, for working because it would be impractical to make decisions for every individual. But the fact that different places and times had different ages for all of these kind of shows that they are somewhat arbitrary and trying to make a moral issue from a legal one is absurd. If Ms. Mattix doesn’t think she was taken advantage of, surely that’s the opinion that matters.

          • hallofreallygood-av says:

Jesus Christ, this is definitely not the hill to die on.David Bowie having sex with a 15 year old is bad. I did not think that would be a controversial statement, but here we are.

          • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Whether it is bad or good ultimately depends on the opinion of the supposed victim. Again, if Ms. Mattix, even after decades of reflection, doesn’t feel that she was victimized at the time, what ought to be controversial is that you seem to think your opinion of the event is superior to hers.

          • yllehs-av says:

Ages of consent vary by location. It’s likely that David Bowie committed such acts where a 15 year old could not consent, but it’s not a global law that a 15 year old can’t give consent.

          • charliemeadows69420-av says:

Grooming is exactly what Bowie did. The term is highly accurate. I know you need to ignore the multiple children Bowie raped so you can continue enjoying his music but Bowie pursued them and manipulated them. He preyed on multiple children. He knew it was wrong and kept it secret.

It’s hard to tell which of these books are novels.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

      1) Not really. What book(s) were you confused by? 2) Why is that an issue even if true? I know people who only read fiction and others who only read non-fiction. Why not both?

      • buttsoupbarnes-av says:

I can’t speak to the confusion. But as a reader of both fiction and non-fiction… I still want to know what I’m reading.

    >> Samantha in Bewitched (for his anchor-symbol face-art in the “John, I’m Only Dancing” video)I think it was more likely Serena. Maybe Bowie never realized they were different characters!
