We’re not quite at the point of awards season where the scent of freshly smelted Oscars is wafting through the air, but the race for those statuettes—and all the other prizes along that path—is well underway. Since the major film festivals have concluded, Hollywood has been screening and schmoozing up a storm, ramping up to the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globes (apparently?), and the various guild awards. The time to make predictions or make the case for potential Oscar nominees has come. The A.V. Club will be doing a bit of both with the major categories in the coming weeks, starting with Best Supporting Actor.

What makes an ideal supporting film performance? These scene stealers are here with 14 examples, any of which could appear on the list when Academy Award nominations are announced on January 24, 2023. Notably, all but two of these names would be first-time Oscar honorees, making this a particularly exciting race to the awards finish line.

Imagine stepping into the lightly fictionalized shoes of Steven Spielberg’s father—after decades of that filmmaker creating movies grappling with father issues. If anyone is up to the task, it’s Paul Dano, who at this point in his fascinating career (remember the ?) is surely overdue for Academy consideration. This writer is still bitter that Dano missed out on a nomination for There Will Be Blood, so a first-time nod for his touching and passionate work as Spielberg’s father figure in should rectify that.

My vote for what it’s worth would be for Ke Huy Quan because both he and his film (Everything Everywhere All at Once) were exceptional.

It’s Rooney Mara, not Mara Rooney.

For years now I’ve been saying “when is Colin Ferrell going to get an Oscar?”
I said it after I saw The Lobster.
Killing of a Sacred Deer exists.I still haven’t seen After Yang.I was like “wtf” after he turned into Johnny Depp at the end of Fantastic Beasts with a tone of “this isn’t better…?”This is like the most overdue thing ever.

No way is The Batman getting any acting nominations. And comparing it to actors who won for playing the Joker is dumb, because Penguin is a much more minor character (and does less Acting, relying instead on makeup effects to just look different). A number of other selections here also have no chance, but that one seemed the most like an inclusion because it was a big comic book movie are likely to have seen rather than because anyone at AVC actually thinks it will get a nomination.

Having just finished watching The Batman an hour ago… yeah, no fucking way is Colin Farrell getting any award nomination for this other than Most Jowl Makeup.I mean, yeah, he’s fine, he’s good, he’s just got nothing to do.

Your forgetting Academy Awards mandate 227/5.4
“Any actor whos performance is based upon a real person, and wears prosthetic make up that required a length of time to apply that will be commented upon by chat show hosts across the land. Shall automatically receive a nomination.”
    So Hanks is in.

I’m gonna Stan for Ke Huy Quan because his role in EEAaO was such a powerful return and standout performance.

I like Colin Farrell, but I find the Penguin’s inclusion here baffling. I have heard no real acclaim for that performance, outside of the “isn’t it fascinating that it’s actually handsome actor Colin Farrell under there?” buzz. It’s not bad, it’s just not one of the best of the year. I’d vote for Brendan Gleeson if I could, and I think he will win. But Ke Huy Quan would be great too.

I’m rooting for Ke Huy Quan & Brendan Gleeson. I’d be happy for either guy.

Anthony Hopkins, Armageddon Time. He’s having such a welcome late-career renaissance and his performance in Gray’s film is outstanding. I’d nominate Jeremy Strong from the same film, as well.

  • scortius-av says:

Fuck off with Eddie Redmayne already.

  • peterbread-av says:

David Dawson’s been low key excellent in a lot of British TV stuff in recent years, and his spin on Joseph Merrick in the sorely underrated Year of the Rabbit tops the lot. Bonus Taika cameo too…

  • signeduptoyellatyou-av says:

    “Mara Rooney”, really?

  • mwfuller-av says:

Let’s just forget about this latest Spielberg joint.  It’ll be like the whole thing never happened.

Also +1 for Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All at Once. What a performance. He, Stephanie and Michelle were giving some of the best and most moving performances in years.
