Beyoncé, Chance, and nostalgia clean up at the 2017 BET Awards

Aux Features Music

Last night was a great night for ‘90s R&B, Chance The Rapper, and Beyoncé, as they all had big wins at the 2017 BET Awards. Hosted by Leslie Jones, the awards show was a mix of old and new standard bearers, with reunited groups New Edition and XScape taking turns taking the stage with Migos, Chance, and Chris Brown, as well as more reflective outings from crooners like Mary J. Blige and Maxwell. Future and Kendrick Lamar provided one of the night’s highlights, surprising viewers with a joint performance of “Mask Off.”

Though she wasn’t present, Beyoncé was the night’s big standout, taking home five awards by proxy; she sent twin singers Chloe x Halle to accept the Vide Of The Year Award for “Sorry.” And Remy Ma broke Nicki Minaj’s winning streak, claiming the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist title for the first time since 2005 for “ShETHER.” Elsewhere, New Edition picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Chance The Rapper took the prize for Best New Artist. But for his “Humble” work on Damn., Kendrick Lamar was dubbed Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Film and TV stars Mahershala Ali, Taraji P. Henson, and Black-ishs Yara Shahidi were also among the night’s winners. You can get a complete rundown below.
