This week, the Emmys crowned another Outstanding Limited Series that might live on past its end and become a regular series, and now one of the most famous examples of that practice might have yet another continuation on the horizon. As reported by Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys has addressed rumors about a third season of Big Little Lies, and while he won’t formally commit just yet, he does say that he thinks having more of the show “could be great”—just the kind of enthusiasm you want out of a TV boss.

Big Little Lies began as an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel about a group of women (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Lara Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley) involved in a murder investigation, with HBO adapting it into a limited series in 2017 and then turning that limited series into a regular series with a second season in 2019 that moved past the events of the book and introduced Meryl Streep to the ensemble.

Bloys told Variety that Witherspoon and Kidman—who are executive producers in addition to stars—have communicated with Moriarty about how the show could continue on with new stories for its characters, and he also apparently mentioned that writer David E. Kelley would likely be involved in a (still hypothetical) third season, but it sounds like he’s barely any more well-informed about this than we are. That suggests that a potential Big Little Lies continuation would still be pretty far off, since Casey Bloys (the head of HBO!) should at least know more about it than the average person on the street.

Still, he seems pretty confident that it will probably happen eventually, so hopefully Witherspoon and Kidman will loop him in on whatever the plans are at some point.

There shouldn’t have even been a second season.

I mean, anything *could* be great, but whether it will be is another question. Also, Shailene Woodley looks like she’s 6’2 in that picture.

The second season could have been great, maybe even should have been great, yet was not great.  I wonder if the third season will also have Young Sheldon.

Nope, no more please. Why not adapt one of Liane Moriarty’s other books?
