You know, with all the recent drama between Taylor Swift and the American Music Awards, we nearly forgot that there is another major night for music that is quickly approaching. The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards promises to be a solid reminder of the year’s most inescapable hits with nominees that were both widely beloved and memed to the heavens. Lizzo leads the nominations this year with eight, while Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X follow closely behind with six each. The three mega stars were the chief sources of this year’s biggest entries into the current pop culture zeitgeist, and each have the potential to take home some major awards, including Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, and Album Of The Year.

The Pop category was notably dominated by the women, recognizing Eilish, Lizzo, Swift, Beyonce, and Ariana Grande. Conversely, women were mostly absent from all the rap categories, with the exception of one nomination for the song “Clout,” which features Cardi B. If anyone needs a little help locating some particularly skilled female lyricists who happened to kill it in 2019, we have more than a few suggestions. On the bright side, other nominees throughout the categories include some solid AVC favorites, including Tank And The Bangas, Brittany Howard, H.E.R, and Vampire Weekend.

The Grammy nominees were announced on CBS This Morning with the help of the ceremony’s returning host Alicia Keyes and two-time nominee Bebe Rexha. The ceremony itself will air on January 26, 2020 on CBS.

See a partial list of the nominees below. A full list can be found on the Grammys website.

lizzo’s been around a minute, i never understand how the grammy’s choose who is and who isnt a new artist

    • paulkinsey-av says:

The poll white people over 40. If the majority of white people over 40 just heard of the artist for the first time this year, they’re new.

      • presidentzod-av says:

Well then color this one unknown artist, because this 40+ year old white guy has no idea who Lizzo or any of these people are.

        • mifrochi-av says:

Lizzo has a killer voice, both singing and rapping, and the production on some of her songs is excellent (some of them, it sounds like the producer was trying to make her sound less distinctive, which is a crime).Billie Eilish has an interesting voice, her lyrics can be funny, and the production on her album is impeccable. Listening to the album is like hearing an astute teenager’s brain. Mileage varies depending on how appealing/excruciating that last bit sounds.Lil Nas X owns the shit out of being a gay rapper in a campy cowboy outfit. I don’t think I’ve actually heard the song, I’m just glad he exists.

    • brontosaurian-av says:

It’d be fun to make them define “new” like how the Oscars get all technical about why or why not something falls into a category. There is so much music though and with streaming we all listen to whatever we want unlike prior when it was CD’s, radio, MTV or local scenes. I have no idea how anything gets a nomination. At least movies are sorta finite per year.

    • thecapn3000-av says:

Not to mention that truth hurts was actually released in 2017.  Fucking grammys

    • dankelleher-av says:

Definitely the white people over 40 thing, but I’m also guessing first full album? Lizzo and Maggie Rogers both had LPs before 2019 but their first full album was 2019. Too lazy to look up the rest.

  • objectivelybiased-av says:

That’s definitely a list of musics.

  • americatheguy-av says:

While I’m not a fan of the Grammys, they at least know how various music genres work. So happy Rival Sons got a nomination, and even happier that Billie Eilish is in the generic pop categories where she belongs. Because sadly, living in Los Angeles, #2 media market in the country, there is no radio station for new rock, and Eilish (along with Lana Del Rey and EDM DJs) are being shoehorned into “alternative rock” stations despite their work having no resemblance to the style. We listen to alt and rock stations to AVOID pop, and yet, thanks to corporate radio, Ryan Seacrest, et al, it’s still being shoved down our throats, whether we want to hear it or not. Meanwhile, Gary Clark, Jr. can’t get airplay to save his life.

Billie Ellish is a tweaking no talent meth head that makes terrible
whisper autotuned music. I think she is so depressed because her daddy
and brother touched her in her no-no place. She should do music a favor
      and kill herself.

  • conan-in-ireland-av says:

Taking the category name at face value (which I know is probably a mistake), 7empest was almost certainly the best metal performance since Bleed.

    • avataravatar-av says:

I have no clue what Sevenempest is, but anyone who approved that spelling should be chained to a boulder and thrown into the Mariana Trench.

Lizzo getting noms in the R&B category and Ari Lennox not getting anything?

  • 95feces-av says:

I’ve long since given up on the other categories, but I’ve barely even heard of any of the Rock nominees. Shit, I’m old.

  • dog-in-a-bowl-av says:

    Ah, yes. Andre 300.

  • mikepencenonethericher-av says:

Lil Nas X for Record of the Year? sure. The song is blah but it broke chart recordsBut Album of the Year?

    • avataravatar-av says:

You’re gonna wanna get that Lil Nas X record in vinyl. Just put it on, sit back, and listen from start to finish. There’s the song about the horse, the one about riding the horse, that other song about the road that he rode the horse on — all cultural touchstones.
I heard if you start the Album right when you hit play on a YouTube video about horseback riding (any one), it syncs up perfectly, provided you start the album on Old Town Road and put it on repeat.

  • psychoninjacat-av says:

    That’s a lot of music I’m completely unfamiliar with… and no K-Pop groups…

  • bhlam-22-av says:

Bon Iver’s showing is absolutely wild. I mean, I’m here for it, but damn.

behold the power of adult contempo

      • hagbard-shaftoe-av says:

Adult Contemporary? Maybe? I don’t know. Stop making me feel old. Regardless, it’s easily the best album of the year, and deserves whatever accolades it gets (in whatever category it gets them).

        • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

I know it’s probably good and I will get to it, I am just being mean, his self-titled was much more egregious in that and he has risen out of it better than Iron + Wine (who is still stuck in backing sax tracks) who can’t seem to get out of that quicksand.

  • rafterman0000-av says:

I can’t wait for Album of the Year and they have to announce on air that “Norman Fucking Rockwell” by Lana Del Rey is one of the nominations.

  • thefabuloushumanstain-av says:

I feel great about this! I never thought I would get to this point in my life and still not listen to nearly anybody nominated for a Grammy(tm)! Good job, me!Questions: 1) If 21 Pilots fight 21 Savages who wins?
    2) Should we take dead people off ballots?
    3) I know not much about Country but legit surprised Miranda Lambert only got one nomination
    4) Very glad the Chance album hardly got any noms, it was the second biggest disappointment of the year behind the Sleater Kinney album.

    • iconsidermidsloud-av says:

If 21 Pilots fights anyone, they lose

    • mifrochi-av says:

      1) Depends if they’re fighting on land or in the air.2) Never. 87% of all Grammys are awarded posthumously.3) Country has its own awards ceremony, so Dale Grammy (the guy who picks Grammy nominees) just throw darts at album covers in his rec room.4) There’s a good chance that Sleater-Kinney album will age well, depending how they follow it up. They’ve done two “transitional” albums since ending hiatus, and hopefully they’ll arrive someplace for the next one.

  • megmegmcgee-av says:

Nice to see Tyler Childers getting some recognition; Sturgill Simpson produced so maybe they’ll let him in (though I guess it was the CMAs where he busked outside and not the Grammys). & I love the Pistol Annies.

  • disqusdrew-av says:

No Misbehavin? The grammy committee must have been running around the house with a pickle in their mouth

  • courtneymj-av says:

    Happy to see Nao here.

  • jeddank-av says:

So glad that Imagine Dragons isn’t being recognized. I don’t even know if they did anything new this year. I’m just glad to not hear a song of theirs. Watch though, they’ll probably perform.

  • richardcranium21-av says:

Phallus shaped wrenches crossed for wins from Tool!

  • mjpick11-av says:

Glad to see Norman F***ing Rockwell and Igor get recognized. Just wish Titanic Rising (my AOTY so far) got nominated for something.

  • jhhmumbles-av says:

Traditional Pop Vocal?  Oh good lord, even Elvis Costello deserves better than that.

  • soveryboreddd-av says:

Shit it takes a lot of people to write a pop song these days. I haven’t heard any of these.

  • muddybud-av says:

And then Lizzo gets sued for wearing orange…

  • johnnysegment-av says:

Giving trophies for music is like dancing along to sports. In saying that, I hope Lizzo and Billy Eilish win absolutely everything just so I can watch all the incel fucks implode.
