Two writers are going from The Belchers With The Beef to the Merc With The Mouth this week, as Variety reports that Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux, who’ve spent most of the last decade penning episodes of Bob’s Burgers and their upcoming animated sitcom The Great North, have been tapped to write Deadpool 3. The news comes as the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero movie makes the transition to the world of Disney and “official” Marvel movies, which hopefully won’t cut down on the number of X-Men who say “fuck,” or the volume of random people getting shot in the head.

The two previous films in the Deadpool series were written (with contributions from Reynolds) by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick; the duo where supposedly developing a script for the third film, but that appears to have fallen by the wayside. The Molyneux Sisters, meanwhile, got their start in TV with Bob’s Burgers, where they’ve served as co-producers, staff writers, story editors, and more; Fox apparently liked their new show, Great North, so much, that it’s already been approved for a second season ahead of its first’s debut. The hiring of two writers so strongly associated with a (routinely superb) animated family sitcom does raise some interesting questions about where the tone of Deadpool 3 is headed, but Disney presumably knows it’ll only shoot itself in the foot if it tries to take the R-rating out of “AaaaaRrrrrgh, it’s me, Deadpool, the fun mercenary who likes to talk about his dick.”

No word yet on when the movie is expected to start filming, but meanwhile, hey: Here’s Bob from Bob’s Burgers with Deadpool’s swords, so that’s kind of fun.

Hopefully these ladies will be able to figure out something to do with Vanessa other than kill her or have her held hostage. I really liked where they started with that character and her relationship with Wade, but killing her at the beginning of DP2 left a bad taste in my mouth that the movie had to work really hard to get rid of. I did appreciate that it was a little different than your standard fridging in that it didn’t motivate a revenge plot and that instead Wade was just suicidal and depressed, and they brought her back to life at the end of the movie, but it would be nice to have her as an actual supporting character in a happy relationship.

I find it interesting that I’ve probably watched the first Deadpool movie at least 10-15 times (helped that I would watch it endlessly when on Amtrak doing trips up and down the east coast) but I have no, absolutely no memory of Deadpool 2. I know I watched it, possibly two times, but nothing. That said, I hope it’s just a trilogy and then he’s incorporated into the wider MCU or even just forgotten about. I honestly thought a one-and-done film would have been fine, as the first movie is perfect brain candy.

I mean, I do agree that they are just brain candy, but I have to admit I really prefer the 2nd film to the first.

I get what you’re saying, and I really do need to watch the second one again, but I really do hope they leave it as a trilogy and call it a day.

      Make her Copycat.

I thought about including that idea, but they would still have to take her in a different direction from the comics because there I mostly remember Copycat being used and abused and generally falling into the unfortunate tropes of lying bitch and/or psycho bitch which would not really be an improvement over hostage/dead.

    • laserface1242-av says:

What’s funny is that in the comics she’s a mutant metamorph with not only the power to shapeshift but replicate another superhuman’s powers.

It’s especially annoying because the basics of the plot work without her dying. Wade’s whole arc was that he wanted to have kids, but can’t now that his wife is dead, and so he focuses all that fatherly energy on helping this kid instead. Just say his powers make it impossible for him to conceive and it’s hard to find an adoption agency that’ll work with an assassin. That still gets you to ‘he wants to have kids but can’t.’

Kind looks like you’ve been stabbed in the back there, Bob.

The news comes as the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero “I think you mean anti-hero.”

Looking forward to Deadpool kicking the ever living shit out of Jimmy Pesto

I’m expecting the same continuity as the first two movies (such as it is) and maybe some fleeting MCU references like the X-Men cameo in Deadpool 2. Be great if/when Deadpool straight up breaks the 4th wall to talk about MCU and continuity though. Odd that they didn’t bring back the writers of the first two (who also wrote the 2 Zombieland flicks), big fan of their work. Any Deadpool appearances in non-Deadpool movies that may happen in the MCU, I would say it would take place in the Deadpool 2 mid-credits stinger when he’s fucking around with Cable’s time travel device.

The write up says it’s expected to be rated R, I don’t see them messing about with that. Don’t know if this means we won’t get a talked about X-Force spin-off but X-Force kinda had their oh so messy moment in Deadpool 2 already.

Now the maybe/maybe not trashed hellicarier in the first Deadpool where the climatic fight with Francis took place could be a thing with the MCU. Also Bob the HYDRA goon could actually be a Bob the HYDRA goon instead of a Francis goon. (even if HYDRA is ka-put). But doubt Deadpool would put that much thought into it. his movies take place in a verse where the X-Men are already clearly established.

This might be a perfect opportunity to recast TJ Miller with H. Jon Benjamin.

Will to my dying day believe that Deadpool should’ve been introduced walking through one of the many portals at the end of Endgame then saying a bleeped “FUCK whoops not yet” and tiptoeing back in.

    • racj82-av says:

That wasn’t the time for Deadpool and his metahumor at all. I actually why they didn’t bring in any surprises. The moment becomes about the surprises and not the avengers as we know them rising back together. Also, we had more than enough fan service.

      • jhelterskelter-av says:

They literally put a meta joke right in the middle of the scene with Benedict Wong, so uh.

        • racj82-av says:

Deadpool and his metahumor I clearly stated. Deadpool’s winky/breaking the fourth wall type of meta is what I’m talking about. Wong was barely being Meta. Strange was asking a genuine question and Wong was being snarky in response so…..

          • jhelterskelter-av says:

Yes, you clearly stated it, just as I clearly stated the type of low-key joke I think would work in this scenario. Both jokes hinge on the idea of “yeah yeah we’re getting a ton of people I get it” and I fail to see how one flies with you and the other doesn’t, but hey you’re a stranger and it’s okay if we disagree about this non-issue.

          • wrighteous-86-av says:

I don’t think there’s anything “low-key” about Deadpool making his first appearance, making a BIG joke in a dramatic scene (which Wong’s wasn’t), and using the one “Fuck” allowed in the film.

Hot take: I don’t think Bob’s Burgers is very funny.I love Loren Bouchard’s work on Home Movies. I love H. Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal, and Eugene Mirman in pretty much everything else they’ve done. I have a really difficult time getting through even one whole episode of Bob’s Burgers. I think I get why people like it. It’s a gentler, lower-stakes counterpart to the Seth MacFarlane brand of randomly violent, mean-spirited “humor.” Its characters and settings invite viewers to just kind of hang out with and in them. It’s “comfortable.” It just doesn’t make me laugh, and as a combination comedy/animation fanatic, I am baffled as to why this show is so widely loved. Possibly relevant: my idea of “comfortable” media is re-listening to Longmont Potion Castle prank calls, so maybe I skew a little dark. That said, even if I don’t personally care for it, BB’s continued success supports the careers of a lot of talented people who I admire, so yay there.
