Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat, much like Dave Chappelle’s “I’m Rick James, bitch!” was undone slightly by a populace perhaps too taken with its lead character’s funny voice. Baron Cohen’s sweeping satire of American culture—the original film touched on everything from post-9/11 xenophobia to frat culture to celebrity worship—was, in the years following its release, reduced to grating cries of “My wife!” and “Very nice!” As Simpsons writer George Meyer said upon watching it for the first time, “I feel like someone just played me Sgt. Pepper’s for the first time.”

It was something of a shock, then, when leaked photos suggested Baron Cohen was resurrecting the character, shooting footage in the same under-the-radar manner with which he shot 2018’s Who Is America? All of this was confirmed recently when Deadline reported that Baron Cohen was indeed making a Borat sequel and that Amazon Prime had already scooped up the rights. Today the streamer dropped the first trailer for the sequel, which is officially called Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery Of Prodigious Bribe To American Regime For Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan.

And that title sums up the story for Baron Cohen’s follow-up, which finds the beleaguered TV host returning to “Yankee land” to “carry out a secret mission.” That mission? Marry off his daughter to someone close to Donald Trump and the White House. That person, as the trailer teases, is none other than Vice President Mike Pence. Of course, he’ll need to overcome a pandemic to deliver her to him. He’ll also have to contend with the fact that he’s a national celebrity now, what with the success of his previous “documentary.”

Watch the trailer below.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery Of Prodigious Bribe To American Regime For Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan lands on Amazon Prime on October 23. Very nice. (Sorry.)

very grateful for something that might make the next month of growing anxiety and nausea slightly more tolerable.

“Interesting, let me just scroll down to check the commen-”“At least he’s wearing a mask, I guess.”

You know what? Fine. In the raging never ending hellscape that is this year, I could see a Borat sequel being okay. If little else, it might be fun to laugh a tiny bit or even just appreciate the effort Sacha Baron Cohen puts in.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

not a good trailer, hopefully a good movie. cohen always gets the benefit of the doubt from me, but his film output as a whole has been pretty weak.

And also, hear me out, in the same manner with which he shot BORAT.

  • nilus-av says:

So the question of how he gets around the fact that everyone knows Borat is by using an accomplice. It may work. I’ll probably give it a watch because I think we all kind wish to be back in 2006 at this point. Not sure if the humor will hold up but I bet if I watch it in one of my drunk and stoned days(aka any day ending with Y in 2020) it won’t matter.

    • roboj-av says:

That Mike Pence scene already looks golden. I genuinely LOL’d at it. Yeah, I agree that if anything watching this will be a nice distraction and a way to lower my blood pressure and anxiety during the election.

      • mattballs-av says:

I was just telling my wife that I thought seeing him run into a Mike Pence speech dressed as Trump, with a girl over his shoulder, and calling him Mike Penis would be worth the price of admission alone.

      • triohead-av says:

        “Penice”

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

I’m going to do the same thing.

    • dudebra-av says:

There is a surplus of willfully ignorant people in my poor nation and Cohen has a genius for exploiting that. This will be very funny and very uncomfortable.

      • dwarfandpliers-av says:

they are not only willfully ignorant but proudly so, because openly displaying your stupidity is a sign of sincerity or “realness” in today’s America for some reason.  I look forward to seeing him expose that stupidity in jaw-dropping ways (if I remember correctly my jaw literally hit my chest at least 4 times during This is America).

    • pdoa-av says:

I’d say 2009, or before 2000. People seem to forget how terrible Bush was just because he seems normal compared to Trump.

      • multimultipass-av says:

Well, that’s mostly because people realize now it was the Cheney that ran more of the show than people expected. After Trump is gone people will look back the same way. Like, only then realizing they gave idiot parrot Trump far too much credit and it was, really, the entire Republican party that betrayed this country. Not the might fat orange parrot that only did what he was told to and talked just to get applause.

      • nilus-av says:

Well 2006 was when we saw hope again as Obama was starting to become the Dem’s rising star

I think we both need and deserve this.

Man, I’m tired. Or that trailer is tired. Something’s tired.

  • barfo69-av says:

You know what?  This looks absolutely terrible and stupid and I am all in for it. Don’t care.  America needs Borat right now.

  • paulkinsey-av says:

I plan to watch this one with my spowse. Did I do that right?

  • ghboyette-av says:

Sometimes I still call my best friend Shane and say “My wife!” and just hang up.

Lol he is being so silly lol look at those bad people who react at him being so silly lol and those bad people who don’t react at him being so silly lol ?Or is there something I miss ?

  • donchalant-av says:

I’m all in. I love Cohen’s attention to the little details, like the censor board card at the very end.

    • negativeed-av says:

His daughter eats the cupcake with the little baby on top, chokes on the baby, they visit a women’s health center because she ‘has a little baby inside me’ and gets talked to by the local pastor because they interpret her need as needing an abortion made me laugh. Then Borat say’s it’s his fault for putting it in her (because he purchased the cupcake)… that scene should make it worth while alone.

  • okoko-av says:

This reminds me of washed up has beens going to Vegas for a quick buck. Let it rest. There was some funny things in “Borat”, but there were also some disgusting things, (like the “sex scenes” with his Armenian friend) to some lots of uncomfortable moments..I just feel SBC should stop these “Candid Camera” type of comedy..

  • yesidrivea240-av says:

Eh, I’ll get way too stoned and watch this… probably.

  • kathrynzilla-av says:

Best October Surprise in an election yet.

  • uyarndog-av says:

I’m always baffled that there are enough people who A. don’t recognize Cohen, or at least sense that something is a bit off about whatever character he assumes, and B. eagerly and enthusiastically show their entire ass for him & the world. But then again this past four years has shown me ample examples that America is stuffed full of people too dumb to recognize a conman even when he robs you, calls you a sucker/loser for serving in the military and paying taxes, and asks you to die for the sake of the “economy”, so what do I know, I guess?

    • choptop13-av says:

Did you actually watch the trailer? The whole premise is that people do recognize him now so he has disguises and an accomplice.

    • berty2001-av says:

In the UK, we’ve got endless B-grade celebrities heading over to the US looking to find out, basically, why everyone voting for Trump. Most recent one was Grayson Perry – so if he can get away with it, sure Borat can as well.

    • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

I don’t accurate this is but I hear some of it is because C. some people realise something is up but are trying to be polite and D) they just keep shooting footage until they get enough for the narrative and dump the parts that clearly didn’t work and especially when he was sprung. On a tangential note, there’s whole entertainment cultures (possibly for many Indian Bollywood, Korean cinema etc etc, I mean I found this fascinating for example: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/annehelenpetersen/jennifer-garner-minivan-majority) which many of us don’t really know much about, conversely there’s undoubtedly a lot who don’t know much if anything about the stuff we know about either.

      • uyarndog-av says:

I think your C and D points have some merit to them. I’m sure creative editing goes a long way to making an awkward encounter seem like a total snow-job.I don’t really understand what your second topic was about, and Jennifer Garner has never interested me much (either her acting or her private life) so I didn’t get far through that article before I had to bail.

    • groundcontroltouncletom-av says:

Falling for fake news bs of course.

  • bigal72b-av says:

A lot of comedies can be tough unless you can watch them along with a crowded theater of other people laughing (an airline bottle of Jack or Bacardi poured into your movie theater cola also helps).I’ll probably watch it, but wish it could be screened in a theater at some point.

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

If I you want, I can come over to your house, throw popcorn all over the floor and spend the whole movie slightly blocking your view while I scroll through Instagram.

      • bigal72b-av says:

haha, well I think for a comedy movie, those things are a little less bothersome. The few times a year I want to see a movie in theaters, I try to go to the AMC/Dolby near me where views are usually not blocked. Miss those sticky floors, though….

  • exolstice-av says:

I watched the trailer fully expecting to hate it and I still laughed despite myself. I will be streaming it when it drops.

  • suffersfoolsgladly-av says:

Few people make me squirm more..but I just love this guy. He’s is a painful pleasure.

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

Aha, so Borat is too well recognized and has to resort to wearing disguises… that actually makes sense as a plot device.

  • brickstarter-av says:

I don’t remember hearing about Cohen getting arrested at CPAC.

  • emorymorningstar-av says:

I know it’s hip now to hate on SBC since Borat became such as over-quoted cultural institution in the mid-2000’s but I appreciate him and that trailer put a smile on my face.

  • isaacasihole-av says:

Is it just me or is his Borat voice slightly off?

  • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I give SBC props for spending any amount of time flicking the noses of radicalized, angry Cult 45ers who are made even more unstable by the growing realization that their boy isn’t getting re-elected. In fact as I watched the preview I wanted to Google whether he had been shot or injured by anyone this year. The comments by his team about “ruining someone’s career” and shedding more light on the Trump-Epstein connection 11 days before the election have me extremely intrigued. Was I also intrigued and then disappointed when he didn’t deliver the Sarah Palin interview from This is America as implied? Yes I was, and I’ll probably also be disappointed here, but I’m still watching on Oct 23.
