Sometimes we find ourselves clinging to the smallest sliver of good news, in order to rationalize the ongoing drudge of daily life. This newfound hope burns like a candle in a windowsill, adding warmth and blocking out the surrounding darkness. This newest slice of news comes as Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang and Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein join the forthcoming animated Garfield feature, per The Hollywood Reporter, which is such a wonderful dispatch it almost makes you forget that Chris Pratt is voicing the lasagna-loving, Monday-hating feline.

Goldstein joins his Ted Lasso co-star Hannah Waddingham in Garfield, alongside Yang, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, and Ving Rhames. Exactly who Goldstein and Yang are playing has not been revealed, but Yang took to Instagram to share that he’s “unfortunately not playing Arlene or Nermal” in the film.

Despite Pratt’s efforts to extinguish any promise for the film, the newest extension of the Garfield universe boasts some impressive Disney-rooted talent. David Reynolds (known for his work on Finding Nemo) penned the screenplay with Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove. Mark Dindal, who helmed animated features such as The Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little is set to direct the film.

Yang is primarily known for his work on Saturday Night Live but has had recent turns in films such as Fire Island, Bros, and The Lost City. He’ll soon appear in the untitled Please Don’t Destroy project with Conan O’Brien and Megan Thee Stallion. He wouldn’t join something terrible, right?

There are times when it is necessary to focus on the positive, to feed the illusions we tell ourselves sometimes. This writer is choosing to cling to the newest casting announcements, telling herself that maybe— just maybe—the movie will not be an abomination.

Garfield is set to make its debut on February 16, 2024.

You know what I’d watch?A Garfield Minus Garfield movie, that’d be hilarious.

I said it before and I’ll say it again: Nick Offerman was right there for the voice of Garfield.

They cast Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lesso but didn’t cast Jason Sudeikis as Jon? Who’s running Hollywood these days, apes?

Yes, I do agree that Brett Goldstein is an excellent choice to play Garfield. I think he possesses the gravitas, and, perhaps more importantly, capability to sport large quantities of facial hair that really make a good portrayal of our 20th president. I must applaud the oft underexplored choice of subject matter, and I just hope the filmmakers don’t make the entire movie revolve around Guiteau’s own delusional path to the assassination, and instead reserve sufficient screen time to cover how Garfield navigated the treacherous politics of the Reconstruction era as well as his support for universal education and civil rights for African Americans.

“You’re a cunt, Jon. You’re a cunt and the sooner you recognize this the sooner we can get to the lasagna. Fuck!”

      • dr-boots-list-av says:

Yes, that is exactly how one should treat Mr. Tyler, the traitorous slave-owning man-whore! Go ahead and be so kind as to suck all of our hairy lasagna cunts, Mr. President! Or, rather, something to that effect.

Thanks for the warning. I bet this will have up to the minute jokes about social media, with a soundtrack and musical scene set to “who let the dogs out”

“He wouldn’t join something terrible, right?”Many, not necessarily me, but many would consider his involvement with SNL to belie this claim.

Also: “This writer is choosing to cling to the newest casting announcements, telling herself that maybe— just maybe—the movie will not be an abomination”Relax?  It’s just Garfield.  Why all the histrionics?

Nice to see Cecily Strong’s name coming up, I have a total crush on her and she’s hilarious so that’s great that she’s getting post-SNL work, haven’t heard much from her in a minute.

Meh, the only thing that gives me hope for this movie is that it’s being directed by Mark Dindal. His directoral debut, Cats Don’t Dance, is an underrated musical both celebrating and lamenting ‘30s Hollywood, and he followed that up with the best Looney Tunes feature (despite not having any of the Looney Tunes characters), The Emperor’s New Groove. If you want to excite me with a casting announcement for this film, confirm that Odie will be played by Gregg Berger.
