Brooklyn Nine-Nine superfan Lin-Manuel Miranda to appear on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Aux Features Lin-Manuel Miranda

The writing was pretty much on the wall from the moment Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted his anguish at the unexpected cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine back in May. When NBC saved the comedy, fans wondered when we could expect to see one of its most vocal celebrity champions on our humble screens. The answer, EW recently learned, is March 7.

The Mary Poppins Returns star and Hamilton architect will be stopping by the 9-9 in an episode titled “The Golden Child,” where he will play David Santiago, Amy’s brother and rival. There are no available plot points yet, but we’re perfectly fine with waiting to see just how their offscreen friendship will fuel their onscreen petty fest.

Amid news of the show’s cancellation, Miranda was one of a core group of celebrities who took to Twitter to passionately voice their support of the series alongside Mark Hamill, Guillermo del Toro, and the Backstreet Boys. He was also there to celebrate with the cast when they found a new home.

When EW asked if anyone from the star-studded pool of superfans would ever make it on the show, co-creator Dan Goor answered hopefully, “We’re huge fans of all of those actors. And we’d love to try to figure out ways to put them on our world.” Again, writing, meet wall.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Thursday nights, 9 p.m. EST.

Cautiously excited for this, in a dignified Amy Santiago-like way

“Cautiously Excited For This” title of Santiago’s sex tape

Have you heard part one of the special Brooklyn Nine-Nine podcast? Melissa Fumero is one of the guests, and speculates that some of Amy’s super-awkwardness comes from her own nervousness on set.

As Santiago’s brother? That’s friggin’ brilliant casting.

    …awesome

So, Jake & Amy went from dating, to engagement to marriage – at which point audiences met both sets of parents, and some of Jake’s half-siblings……but at no point was there a mention of Amy’s brother?   Hm.  I see a shark, with Jake on a BMV jumping over it.

    • LadyCommentariat-av says:

Eh, if he’s her rival, he could have been away doing something über-important like brokering peace in the Middle East and then returns to much fanfare.

Personally, I see that the pulling away from that part of her backstory has more to do with the fact that Amy has become a bit less hyper-competitive as the series has gone and being the only girl out of eight children helped to explain that part of her character.
Her brothers were mentioned really early on in the “Sal’s Pizza” episode from season 1, so her brothers are established. It is strange that that it’s taken them this long to introduce any of them or even just bring them up again. But, there is absolutely precedence for Amy’s brother to show up.

Amy’s 7 brothers are mentioned many, many times though? She’s literally introduced in the pilot as the only girl in a family full of brothers. She even had a niece who is mentioned. We know one of them is named Tony cause Jake thinks he’s the most attractive.

    • msp1986-av says:

In the pilot they mentioned that she has multiple (three?) brothers and said that’s why she’s so competitive. It just hasn’t come up a ton in the seasons between.

To be fair, they’ve mentioned Amy’s brothers (collectively) in several episodes. Off the top of my head: the pilot, the episode where Amy was jealous that Rosa was offered a job, and the episode with Jake’s half-sister.But I do agree it’s strange that none have shown up on screen before.

      • seraphxiii-av says:

Eh, could be from out of town. My sister is only 100 miles away, and though I see her fairly often, most of the people I know at work and even outside of work have only met her maybe once, at most, because usually when we meet up, it’s to meet up outside of a friend group style social setting.

      • snowconan-av says:

excellent points! It’s the “backpocket” of lazy writing: mention family members, but don’t show them until a celebrity’s available for stunt casting.“Sorry I wasn’t around for your engagement or wedding or whatever, Amy. I was busy at work in the Biodome, trying to save the planet.  So….how’s the rigged dog show, or whatever case you’re working on?”

Finally got to see Hamilton! Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius! I hope I don’t get in trouble but I filmed some of it.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I want Jake to be really into him, which will make Amy jealous, but not as jealous as it makes Charles.

  • swonderful13-av says:

But where’s Guillermo del Toro?! He’s the one I’m most excited to see. Maybe another brother? Or an uncle?

  • haodraws-av says:

Mark Hamill as a Boyle uncle next? Or as Hitchcock’s brother?

  • beeexcellent-av says:

No snark could be conjured up for this, weak

  • Blaine-av says:

That is awesome, but it won’t be as awesome as Gizmoduck!

  • Blaine-av says:

Tangentially related: I was really disappointed that they saw fit to bring in Mario Lopez. I’ve been wondering why anyone still works with him since even before the #MeToo movement took off. But now, geez. And considering Terry Crews’ involvement as the first prominent male victim to speak out (I think, unless it was Brendan Fraser), it just felt so incredibly tone deaf.
