As the leaves turn and we all brace ourselves for the deafening roar of noise that will constitute daily life in the final month before America’s presidential election, it’s nice to know that we can pop on some headphones and find respite in the upcoming swell of great new music arriving in October. From big names like the return of the Boss (E Street Band by his side) to the gentle holiday twang of Dolly Parton; from all-caps attacks in the form of frenetic K-pop thumpers BLACKPINK to the furious noise assault of METZ; and from the stirring hip-hop of Westside Gunn to the understated beats of Open Mike Eagle, here are the albums we’re most excited to hear in the coming days.

Best known for his R&B-pop single and his Avicii collaboration Aloe Blacc is back with his first album in seven years. On the three tracks available before All Is Love’s release, it’s clear Blacc’s sound has softened a bit in that time. The driving beats of his earlier work have given way to more mellow vibes akin to John Legend (as on the piano ballad ) and Andy Grammar (on the “you can do it”-messaged ) or Sam Smith (on the falsetto-laded ). Blacc may have lost a little of his edge with age, but who hasn’t? Now, instead of vibing to his tracks before a night out, we can vibe to them on a lazy morning. [Patrick Gomez]

Also in October:  The new Black Thought record (at least unless there are more delays), a new Budos Band album, the re-release of Wildflowers by Tom Petty, a posthumous covers album by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and a new Fratellis album.

I’m always down for a new Gorillaz album, but, man, I really wish Albarn would just make a follow-up to Everyday Robots (even if everything non-Blur he does is technically just a solo-project anyway).

Remember when Lana Del Rey was supposed to release in September? I wonder if we’ll see it in October.

  • fireupabove-av says:

Glad to see Helena Deland get a shoutout. She got me through some long miserable subway commutes last spring/summer.

That Lera Lynn video won’t play, because it’s two days away from premiering. Here’s the official audio-only version:

I’ve only heard of 13 of these acts. Weh. Also is anyone under 60 excited about a new Bruce Springsteen album?

    • kevinkap-av says:

I was excited pre Covid when it was understood that Springsteen would go back out with the E Street Band on tour this past summer, alas never happened. I guess I might enjoy a new album recorded with the E Street Band together. Probably won’t though.

    • alurin-av says:

      Yes.(but I’m not that far under 60, so…)

    • praxinoscope-av says:

Is anyone over 60 even interested? A whole lot of people never cared from day one.

His last was my favourite since Nebraska, and the film was a joy. So… yeah.

    • fever-dog-av says:

He still drops classics now and again although more and more needs to turn to gimmicks or genres that appeal to his core market. See Seeger Sessions and Devils and Dust. Nothing has really resonated with me in the past 20 years other than those two anyway. Maybe it’s just Americana-fan me.

Its funny how many people embrace hating Springsteen as a part of their personality.-not even 40 yet

  • hamologist-av says:

The Mountain Goats are going full Mount Eerie by way of Neil Young in their own special Mountain Goaty way, and I fucking love it.

a black-metal blitzkrieg with a touch of Kurt Cobain’s quiet-loud-quiet strategyI think even Kurt Cobain would stop and correct you on this take. He fully admitted that the entire strategy was lifted part and parcel from The Pixies. Hell, the film about the Pixies re-uniting was titled “loudQUIETloud”.

    • andysynn-av says:

Heck, I’d add a disclaimer that Z&A’s “Black Metal” aspects are (and have always been) their weakest part, and it’s the lyrics and hymnal rhythms/melodies which are their strong point.

That’s not what “trap” means, you guys. Can we get someone remotely plugged into hip hop culture to do the hip hop write-ups?This site hasn’t had a clue in that respect since Rabin left.

  • tigersblood-av says:

PUP needs to send Mclusky a check.

    • erakfishfishfish-av says:

I was going to point out how PUP and Mclusky are nothing alike, but then I listened to that track and yeah, I see your point. (Not that it’s a bad thing.)

  • wackd32-av says:

No love for Neil Cicierega, or did he just announce Mouth Dreams after this article was finished?

  • praxinoscope-av says:

God, this is a thoroughly depressing list. I could go to Entertainment Weekly if I wanted to read about this shit.

  • kleptrep-av says:

ㅋㅋㅋ Who gives a shit about Blackpink? Their new song’s the second worst song of the year after Not Shy by ITZY. If you like Blackpink you not only have zero taste in music but you also have no morals, take a look at what their parent company does.

  • martinm70-av says:

Oh yeah consistently producing good quality music year after year…. Touring the world over and over. Who else can say that other than the rolling stones who can’t be arsed to produce new music anymore. 50 years and still going strong! Brrrrrrrruuuuuccee!!!!!

Are you really waiting to hear a Plackpink album? If you are, never do a music review again.

You forgot Róisín Murphy. Come on guys!!!!!

  • panthercougar-av says:

How is there no love for the long-awaited deluxe version of Tom Petty’s Wildflowers. Mine is coming today and I cannot wait to listen to it. I’ve been waiting for this for years!
