Buffy nerds have something to sing about: The "Once More, With Feeling" cast recording will be released on vinyl

Aux Features Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

Even if you’ve never seen an episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer in your life, you’ve likely heard devoted fans sing the praises of the musical episode, “Once More, With Feeling.” 18 years later, it is still one of the most heralded episodes of the classic series with its own very dedicated following. Come March 20, fans can finally have every gorgeously cringeworthy note in their possession.

For the first time ever, the original cast recording will be released on vinyl. Record label Mondo will distribute the record with new artwork by Paul Mann and fresh liner notes from creator Joss Whedon.

Label Manager Mo Shafeek released a statement:“We’ve been huge fans of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer for decades. Our obsession with the musical episode ‘Once More With Feeling’ inadvertently presented a solution to a long standing problem of how to best entry point for us to celebrate the brilliantly singular, yet expansive series. It took a few years to get it perfect, but we couldn’t be prouder with the artwork that Paul Mann put together—including some truly inspired additional design by Chris Bilheimer and Eric Montes, who came up with the idea of the ‘Slaybill’ lyric booklet.”

The cast recording goes on sale March 20th at 12:00 p.m. CST via Mondo’s online store. There’s likely a lot of enthusiasts waiting for the chance to force their friends into a properly uncomfortable duet to “I’ll Never Tell,” so it’s best to prepare for a little competition as soon as the goods are released.

This is unexpected but pleasant news!  I’m not even a huge fan of musicals, but Once More With Feeling is easily my most watched episode of Buffy (followed closely by Tabula Rasa – those two episodes are great to watch back to back).

Due to a slightly odd turn of events, even though I’ve seen every episode of Angel and every other episode of Buffy (including the pilot), this is the one episode of Buffy that I’ve never seen to this day.

I’m a lifelong edm fan who never had enough money back in the day to get into vinyl. Now that I’m older and have extra money I’ve been looking into getting a decent turntable and bookshelf speakers for my smallish office, then finding my favorite electronic albums from the old days on vinyl, but not much more than that. THIS will definitely be added to my list.

I’m not a music snob by any means, but one of the things I enjoy about vinyl is you can find a lot of classics for dirt cheap.

‘lifelong EDM fan’ does not track. unless you are very young.

Ok, “techno” it used to be called in the 90’s.. or possibly “electronica”? The kids all call it EDM now, so I thought I’d go with that.

Ooh, excellent, now I can play it on the turntable I don’t own.

“She needs backup. Anya, Tara”*they join as backup singersI rewatched this recently, coincidentally. It definitely holds up

I watch it once a year (along with a the “essential episodes” of the show) and yeah it does. It’s one of the better “musical episodes” in TV canon. It segues into the singing organically, the songs serve the plot and a couple of the cast members have really great voices (you expect it from Anthony Stewart Head given his background, as well as brother’s but Amber Benson was a surprise)

I literally showed it to my son just last night. He’s been listening to the album pretty much non-stop all day. It took him a few seconds to get the backup joke. Now we just have to get tothe Small Time episode of Angel and my job will be done.

“Was it a stand-alone hit or more of a book number?”

Vomit. Never has their been a more overrated show and single episode. Gag.

Oh great. Now my personal theme song, Going Through The Motions is running through my head again.

…Under Your Spell can fuck off though.

Unpopular Opinion: While I love this episode, much like most other Buffy fans, it drives me frigging nuts when people (and there are many that will) argue that “if you only see one episode of the show, it has to be ‘Once More With Feeling’” to try and get someone into it. Everything that happens in the episode, every song and plot point, calls back to stuff that’s been building all season long. Unless you’ve been watching the show already, the actual events of OMWF must come across like the first conversation with the aliens from Darmok.

This is already in my go-to sexy time playlist – on vinyl, it’ll be a real boxer dropper.

  • redplasticmac-av says:

I actually applaud this release. Now, if I enter a domicile and this is sitting on a shelf, I’ll know in plenty of time to immediately turn on my heel and leave.

  • lazerlion-av says:

Anyone reading the new Boom Studios Buffy comics? The latest issue was pretty great.

    THEY GOTTHE MUSTARDOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!!!!!!!!

I loved this episode – still can’t figure out how they snuck “you make me come…plete” onto a network show, especially with what was happening in the scene as it was sung. The songs work as a musical’s songs should – they further the plot and without them there would be a need for explication.. but the episode itself works to further the plot of that whole season and the one(s) following it.  So, good job all in all.
