We’ll be honest: Of all the TV properties that Marvel and Disney have been prepping for their long-planned takeover of Disney+, few have gotten our fan-person hearts pumping harder than What If? Adapting the long-running line of Marvel Comics hypotheticals, the animated series sees Jeffrey Wright’s Uatu The Watcher walk viewers through the titular question in all sorts of fascinating ways—as today’s trailer for the series quickly makes abundantly clear.
What if Peggy Carter had gotten the super-soldier treatment? What if Captain America was a zombie? What if T’Challa had been picked up by Michael Rooker’s alien pirates instead of Chris Pratt? These are big, cool concepts, and the show seems determined to explore them all, showing us, well…What If?
What If? is slated to come to Disney+ in Summer of 2021.

Sounds like the rumors were true and Chadwick Boseman was able to record his lines for this. I was wondering if Marvel would use this occasion to recast the character, but I assume this means they’ll deal with that later.

I agree with you, what I meant was that if Boseman *had not* recorded his lines, it would have been a pivot option for Marvel. But at this point, whatever outcry there would be over recasting would be totally dwarfed by the outcry from shelving a completed voiceover by Boseman.
A version of Peggy Carter who became Captain America did end up joining The Exiles, which is sort of the superhero version of Sliders.
Weird mini hamburgers.
Exiles was the bomb!
I wonder if Exiles is the endgame (no pun intended) for this endeavour. Could probably tie into Spider-verse too.Hell, once Disney inevitably gets the spiders back, I can see them using this to flesh out Noir, SP/DR etc.
I’d hope if they do Exiles, they just make it a straight follow-up to the 2018 comic run.
I gotta say, Peggy wears the hell out of that outfit.
Peggy Carter, automatically becoming the hottest and most badass Captain Britain ever
And instantly becoming the best known one, once this show debuts. Which is fine. (Sorry, existing Captain Britain fans.)
Damnit, I was hoping they’d make Paul F Tompkins Uatu.
I certainly never imagined Uatu’s voice to be deep and ominous and booming. In my head, it was always kinda high-pitched and whiny, seemingly in a constant state of annoyance.
I read the original “What If?” back in the day and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was often dismissed as frivolous, but I always loved the alternative realities it explored, even when it basked in the silliness of an idea. Definitely looking forward to this, though it looks like it’ll entirely be focused on the current MCU as opposed to pulling directly from the original comic book run. I hope they eventually get to at least some of those stories.
Maybe they won’t feel they have to stick to the original’s “show things happened the way they were supposed to by having all alternate versions end badly for all involved” formula.
The way I see it, What If is just as frivolous as the regular Marvel canon. Neither is more real than the other and they’re both fun, so why not enjoy them both?
Agreed, but what about the religious zealot adherence to the “canon”? 😉
Hey, it’s not like the writers care about canon. Why should I?
I wonder if licensing will still hamper them from adopting one of my favorite What If?s of What if the Punisher merged with the Venom Symbiote? The answer: it would be really cool. And I get that these stories didn’t have the same depth to them all the time, but sometimes I just want to see that someone else had the same thought spiral I did, and then illustrated it, even if it didn’t end the same way I thought it might.
I frequently hear that Sony’s Spider-Man license doesn’t extend to TV. If that’s true, Venom should be fair game.
I mean they can always do Franken-Castle and Cosmic Ghost Rider instead…
I own every piece of ownable Cosmic Ghost Rider merch. Big love.
Remember when he fixed the Clone Saga?
The animation on this gives me the fun tickles. If they made every new Marvel superhero movie in this style, I would not object.
yeah if this is a ‘house style’ for MCU-related animation i’m all for it.
I used to get so frustrated with Marvel’s shitty Lionsgate animation. Comics are about great art. This is more like it.
Marvel, hurry up and do the Clone Saga in the Spider-Man films, so we can get a What If episode based on the issue from the 1980s where Spidey and his clone decide to share their life by alternating being Peter and Spidey. I want to see an animated version of Peter Parker starring in Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers.
What a timeline to be alive in!
