A new expansion pack for The Sims 4 was released this week, and in addition to the usual fun of telling virtual people that they’re not allowed to use the bathroom and removing the ladders from their swimming pools, it also brings along something for people who love hit pop jams. As reported by Vox, The Sims 4: Get Together features a new version of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away With Me” recorded entirely in The Sims’ made-up gibberish language and sung by Jepsen herself. The end result is a surprisingly solid tune, even if the lyrics are nonsense—that just means the specific lyrics aren’t as important as the overall tone of the song. Of course, the gibberish lyrics also get pretty annoying, so it’s probably for the best that this remains a fun gimmick instead of becoming the new way that people listen to music.
The idea of taking existing songs and “translating” them into The Sims’ language has actually been around for a while, going back to a spinoff called The Urbz in 2004, which featured some re-recorded Black Eyed Peas songs. The Sims 2 had The Flaming Lips, The Format, Hot Chip, and Barenaked Ladies, among others. Sims 3 had Matt & Kim, Manchester Orchestra, OK Go, the Old 97’s, and a bunch of other stuff. It’s incredibly weird hearing a song you know with meaningless lyrics, but it’s even weirder to think that there are probably people out there who prefer the Sims versions.
