Chris Evans is teaming up with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for a holiday action-comedy from Amazon Studios. Deadline first reported news about his casting in the movie, currently titled Red One and set to be released at the end of 2023.

Deadline said of the movie, “[Red One] is a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre,” but also added that more specific plot details are being kept under wraps. The movie will be directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji), and the screenplay was written by Chris Morgan, who has worked extensively on the Fast & Furious films.

What all that actually adds up to is anyone’s guess. Will The Rock play an ultra-buff Santa Claus, pushing his sleigh and reindeer to their absolute limit? Will Evans play some sort of elven superhero who has to save his best elf friend from a chunk of frozen ice? Will the starring duo get caught under some mistletoe? Only time will tell.

Evans most recently appeared briefly in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up. Earlier this month, it was announced that he might play Gene Kelly in a movie currently in development. He’ll also voice Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s confusing Toy Story spin-0ff Lightyear. Evans will star in the upcoming Apple feature Ghosted with Ana de Armas, and he’ll appear in the Russo Brothers’ new film The Gray Man for Netflix.

Evans also started a civic media organization A Starting Point, supposedly aimed at healing political divides and finding common ground. Last summer, they released a series of videos on the Middle East that some loudly decried as CIA propaganda.

Meanwhile, The Rock is coming off his own Netflix film, Red Notice, which apparently has two sequels in the works. This year he’ll voice Krypto the Superdog in DC League of Super-Pets, and star as Black Adam in the DC film of the same name.

…didn’t this movie already come out? But it was Ryan Reynolds with the Rock?

    … sequel to Red Notice?

I mean obviously it’s a prequel where we find out about how the macguffin from the first movie got to where it was at the start of that movie, featuring a bunch of characters who all die at the end of the movie, and then a five-second CGI cameo of a younger Rock as he’s heading toward the place we first saw him in the movie.

It brings in Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, and connects into the R.E.Dverse as well.

Well I hope the globe trotting scenes in this are better than the green screen rubbish we got from Red Notice. Granted there’s a pandemic on, but aside from being a so-so action comedy the location shots were pretty ropey.

i think you can almost guarantee this will entirely be shot on a soundstage in atlanta.

I didn’t mind with the obvious fake Bali beach and fake Brimob (Indonesian version of SWAT). But the Malaysian plate number on the cop vehicle made me laugh out loud.

The second paragraph is literally describing Red Notice again, only in a Christmas setting.

Because, like most big-tentpole streaming movies (including Red Notice), this was written by algorithm. I mean, humans write the actual dialogue, but their data model spits out the profit-optimized parameters based on the highest-grossing recent movies: – ACTION-COMEDY
      – CHRISTMAS THEME
      – DWAYNE JOHNSON
      – CHRIS EVANSThen a script is built around that.

Yeah, that makes sense. It’s kinda sad though, and I didn’t even hate Red Notice, just found it harmless and forgettable.I’m a huge fan of Johnson, but he could do with stretching a bit… maybe do an hard R action movie like Commando where he wipes out entire armies while cracking dumb one-liners.

I’d love to see him play one of the Coen brothers’ hapless cocky thinks-he’s-smarter-than-he-is comedy protagonists, like Clooney in O Brother, Tom Hanks in the Ladykillers, or Malkovich in Burn After Reading.

          • peon21-av says:

He could have been good in Brad Pitt’s role in Burn After Reading, and not just because Pitt plays a gym-bunny.

            Oh definitely!

          • arquetteclone-av says:

That could work! He sort of did something similar in Pain & Gain, where he played a bodybuilder who’s a cokehead and a religious nut, a moron playing at criminal mastermind. “You can see the bone!” It’s probably his best performance IMHO.

“Sorry, Computer, we couldn’t get Chris Evans.”“YOU WILL GET CHRIS EVANS. NON-COMPLIANCE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. YOU WILL OBEY.”“Uh, Computer, I think-”“RAISING ROOM TEMPERATURE TO 150 DEGREES. SEALING ALL EXITS. OBTAIN EVANS OR BE TERMINATED. OFFER EVANS POINTS ON BACK END.”

    Red Five, standing by…

Both these actors I like despite the fact that most of their movies don’t appeal to me. Evans I think can actually act and Dwayne Johnson just seems nice but if I watch this, it will be because I can think of nothing better, and I’m cleaning or something and want something on it the background. P.S Snowpiercer was cool.

I actually did like that one-crazy-night movie where he’s the trumpet player.[round-trip to imdb] Turns out he directed it? Huh. Good for him.

Evans is really good in Gifted but gets largely upstaged by a ten-year-old Mackenna Grace. Also, Puncture.

what exactly are these ‘4 quadrants’ everyone keeps talking about? is it literally as stupid as like ‘action, comedy, romance & something for the kids’?

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

“A globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre and oh my God, I can’t keep doing this, I can’t keep spouting these meaningless words. Where did it all go wrong? I was going to be a human rights advocate. I was going to help people. I just feel so hollow and used up. Is there any point to this? I can’t stop crying at night.”
