Chris Gauthier, an actor known for his work on Eureka and Once Upon A Time, has died, according to Variety. The cause of death was reportedly an “unspecified short illness.” He was 48 years old.

“We can confirm that our dear friend and client, Chris Gauthier, passed away on Friday morning, February 23, at the age of 48,” said a statement from TriStar Appearances/Event Horizon Talent (via Variety). “His loss is felt not just by his fans but by those of us who were lucky enough to know him more personally. On behalf of his family, we do ask for privacy during this time so that they are able to grieve properly.”

Gauthier first appeared on screen in 2000 and had roles in films like 40 Days And 40 Nights, Agent Cody Banks, Watchmen, and Freddy Vs. Jason. He had a prolific television career with guest spots on shows like Dead Like Me, Kyle XY, Psych, iZombie, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow, and more. He also frequently worked with the Hallmark Channel, most recently in films including Ms. Christmas Comes To Town and Three Wise Men And A Baby.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Gauthier’s representative Chad Colvin wrote, “Chris was the literal textbook definition of a character actor. You may not have known his name but you knew his face, you knew his voice, and you knew that if he was onscreen, you were in for a helluva ride. Whether he was standing toe-to-toe against Clark Kent on Smallville as the Toyman, tormenting Dean on Supernatural, on deck with Hook as Smee in Once Upon A Time or in guest roles in the numerous productions he was in, he ALWAYS gave it his all when the camera was rolling.”

“Rest in Peace Chris! Heartbroken!” Gauthier’s Once Upon A Time co-star Colin O’Donoghue, who played Hook to Gauthier’s Smee, posted on Instagram. “My love and thoughts go out to [wife] Erin and the boys! You will be missed brother! You were the real captain!!” Once Upon A Time’s co-showrunner Adam Horowitz also posted to X/Twitter, “So sad to hear of the passing of Chris Gauthier. Such a kind, sweet, and talented person. You will be missed.”

The Hallmark Channel posted a tribute to the actor on Instagram, writing, “We are sorry to hear about the passing of Chris Gauthier. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans.”
