Following the perceived contempt for the movies from Golden Globes’ host Jo Koy, who notably complained about the length of Oppenheimer in his widely derided monologue, audiences probably felt a welcome relief at the opening of the Primetime Emmy Awards. Host Anthony Anderson reassured the crowd at the top of the show that he loves television, celebrating some of TV’s most iconic series (Good Times, Facts Of Life, and Miami Vice) in his monologue. But it was another television veteran who stole the Emmys opening: Christina Applegate, making her first major appearance since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021.

Applegate’s appearance as the night’s first presenter was well in keeping with the historic 75th Emmys broadcast. As Anderson noted, Applegate grew up on television. Literally: her first ever TV role was as an infant alongside her mother on Days Of Our Lives before playing the teen daughter on Married… With Children. Emmy viewers got a glimpse of baby Applegate on the big screen, but adult Applegate, herself a nominee for the final season of Dead To Me, commanded the stage.

Emotional at the warm welcome she received from the Hollywood crowd, her comedic stylings were sharp enough to make you wish she was the night’s host. “Oh my God, you’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up,” she cracked after getting a standing ovation, joking that her body is “not by Ozempic” and telling the crowd that they don’t have to applaud for every single thing she said. From the strong opening to announcing the winner of the category (Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series) by declaring, “Ayo, get your ass up here,” Applegate had the theater eating out of the palm of her hand.

It’s a good idea, at an awards show, to actually celebrate the thing that the ceremony is meant to celebrate. And what better time to celebrate television than the Emmys’ historic 75th broadcast? From Ayo Edeberi’s win, Applegate passed the stage over to TV legend Carol Burnett, who presented Lead Actress in a Comedy Series to Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson—an incredible set of television stars new and old, and a great way to kick off the Emmys.

She was really good on Married with Children. I remember this one episode where Bud made fun of her for being slutty, but then she got him right back with a crack about him being a virgin loser. It was really funny.

Kelly was always a character known for prompting the hootin’ and hollerin’ from the “your dad and uncles embarrassing themselves at Hooters” studio audience, but even back then, she had some absolutely sublime comic timing and delivery that would continue throughout her career.

The show was often cartoonish, especially in the later years, but seasons, say, 2-5 really had some fantastic comedy acting, and Applegate was often at the forefront of that.

She got stuck in the role and had a really hard time breaking out of it. It wasn’t until Anchorman that I think she got a chance to move beyond it.

I was a dumb teenage boy when MwC was at its peak and yea, my stupid ass thought Applegate basically was Kelly. Meaning I thought of her as eye-candy at best, if not actually a dumb blonde. It was indeed when Anchorman came around (further solidified by Dead to Me) that the obvious-to-anyone-who-knew-jack-shit became apparent to me: Christina Applegate is an acting and comedy powerhouse.

Bullshit. She had a successful two-season sitcom DIRECTLY after M…wC ended.

You have to be pretty smart to play that dumb.

“Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” remains one of my favorite movies from my childhood.

I know you’re trying to sound way too cool for school, but you’re accidentally 100% correct.

      • tvcr-av says:

The only person too cool for school is someone who’s already graduated. Don’t be a Debbie Dropout. Stay in school.

The episode where Kelly was tasked as a contestant on a Jeopardy! like game show. Bud tutored her, but said her mind could only hold so many facts, Three guesses to what she forgot in the final round to lose it all?Back then, MWC was so much better than The Cosby Show as it was so much more relatable. The worldly, but otherwise ditsy blonde was a big reason. It’s true, there’s only so many facts our minds can hold – but even I remember Al Bundy scored 4 TDs in the 1966 all city HS championship game between Polk and Andrew Johnson. Go Team Bundy! lol

Applegate has had a really tough road in recent years between the MS diagnosis and the double mastectomy and oophorectomy.I hate the ‘she’s a very strong person’ trope so I won’t do it. What I will say is that I’m glad her peers acknowledged her in the way they did, because we all saw what that meant to her.

Good thing you didn’t do it…

Great actress & so funny. She deserved more leading roles. Being so ‘hot’ may have held her back. Love you Christina.

I almost forgot just how blisteringly funny and quick-witted Applegate is. She was without question the highlight of the night.

I hate that the second thing out of her mouth was feeling self-conscious about her weight. Give yourself a break!

I was diagnosed with MS in 2011 – it’s brutal and hers is extremely aggressive. I burst into tears when she got her well-deserved standing ovation.I know the sheer effort and physical toll it took on her to do that last night. And she still has that sparkle and intelligence and that brilliant comedic timing and quick mind. I’ve always loved her and always will and my admiration for her is through the roof.
