Bittersweet news for Cobra Kai fans. The beloved Karate Kid spin-off has finally secured a renewal from Netflix—for its final season. Creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg announced the news in an open letter to fans, accompanied by a dramatic teaser that spans the history of the Karate Kid franchise and promises that the “final showdown” will be the “biggest,” “baddest” season yet.

“Reacquainting the world with The Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor. Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted,” the letter reads in part.

“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our own terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined,” it continues. “So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.”

While this may mark the end of a chapter, the creators promise that “the Miyagiverse has never been stronger” and that they “hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line.” Many of those involved with the franchise have teased exploring the world further—whether that be sequels or prequels. And given that Cobra Kai was apparently a ratings smash to put House Of The Dragon and Rings Of Power to shame, perhaps this isn’t quite goodbye to Daniel (Ralph Macchio), Johnny (William Zabka), and the rest of the gang.

In the meantime, there’s the sixth season teaser to enjoy. “We’ve been fighting so long. Against each other, with each other. It’s hard to keep track,” Zabka narrates over a montage of his rivalry with Daniel. “It hasn’t always been smooth. But after all this time, we’ve built something together to be proud of,” Macchio adds.

The sixth season of Cobra Kai doesn’t have a release date yet, but the teaser promises it’s “coming soon to Netflix.” Until then, “Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.”

Undoubtedly so Hillary Swank can make a cameo, and close the loop.

Well to truly close the loop you can bring in Jaden Smith and/or Jackie Chan.  I don’t know how in the world you’d do it in a way that makes sense, but I feel like this show has been playing pretty fast and loose with “making sense” ever since the school-wide karate battle royale.

This really does feel like the natural stopping point. It’ll already be pushing things for Kreese to continue his war against Daniel while being a high-profile fugitive, and the story just can’t be taken any further.

This show had no business being as absolutely fun as it has been.  Watching Johnny and Chozen go back and forth on their Daniel fights and man-praise was hilarious.

I think this is the first time I can say Netflix ending a show that I personally like seems fitting this time. It lasted six seasons. The first couple of seasons were on Youtube. It seems to have mosty concluded overall it’s main story points. Many fans of the show were starting to feel it should come to an end soon anyway, or were asking where does it go from here without it going into too cartoonish territory like Fast and the Furious?Season six I can see the whole international tournament thing. But after that, then what? Fighting cartels? On the run from a secret faction of government assassins? Interdimensional tournament to decide the fate of the Earth? Ok those can be the spin offs. Miguel, Robby, and Tori take on the cartels. Samantha and Kyler are being hunted by a secret government faction of assassins. And Chozen, Eli, Demetri, Piper, and Moon get wrapped up in the interdimensional tournament.  Yeah, this show can’t pull off a Supernatural run. Cobra Kai is one of today’s few shows that actually seems to have told the story they wanted and as the creators said, end on their terms.

It’s ridiculous and enjoyable but with respect, it’s already been in cartoonish terms. Kreese faking his death for a prison escape, guys in their sixties declaring they’re not afraid to die before a katana battle over a teenaged martial arts tournament- all of this is escapist fantasy, none of it is realistic!

      • BlueSeraph-av says:

Oh yeah. Agreed. It got cartoonish by season 2 school gang karate fight. But it was fun and for the most part accepted for what it was. By season 5 though, that’s when I felt my suspension of disbelief had reached its limit.

        The jello… man oh man

      • tvcr-av says:

But there’s a difference between guys faking their deaths and an interdimensional tournament. They’ve avoided the Superman paradox for the most part (a fictional universe has its own set of rules that that may be unrealistic, but that doesn’t mean any unrealistic thing can happen i.e. Superman is strong and can fly, but that doesn’t mean flying backwards around the Earth will reverse time).

“Season six I can see the whole international tournament thing.”Maybe if they hadn’t built it up as some super secret tournament that sounds like it takes place on Mister Han’s Island. But unfortunately they did build it up.On top of which we’re supposed to believe Terry Silver was going to bring Cobra Kai to compete at this tournament with Kenny as his champion.Kenny. That’s straight out of a comic book.

      • BlueSeraph-av says:

I can’t blame you for feeling that way. I enjoyed season 5 and still like the show. But, it was pushing myself as well as others suspension of disbelief.

      • robgrizzly-av says:

Agreed. I never understood why they didn’t elevate that other bully (Kyler?) He really embodied what I picture a classic Cobra Kai student to be. Outside of him and Tory, that dojo is populated with tough-acting nerds.

      • carlos-the-dwarf-av says:

It’s absolutely right out of a comic book…and it’s goddamn amazing, haha!

I knew this was coming. What’s left to do? They’ve linked the series to every Karate Kid movie (almost) and got almost every actor to return and reprise their roles. The only thing left is Karate Kid 4 with the female Karate Kid, Hillary Swank. Her character could meet Daniel and they both bond over knowing and trained under Mr. Miyagi. Then team up to fight the enemy, but that’s a long shot. I doubt they would do that, but you never know.

I can see a time-jump into the future where Sam, Miguel, and Robby are running Miyagi-Do facing Kyler who resurrects Cobra Kai. “Cobra Kai The next generation.”

  • ghboyette-av says:

A few years ago I never would have thought this little joke of a series would have been good, let alone get six seasons. I’m very happy they’re going out on their terms. I’ve loved every single minute of this show.

  • g-off-av says:

Probably a good move considering the show ran out of plot two seasons ago.

  • desh333-av says:

Love this show just like the movie series back in the 80’s ! It took me back in time.

  • akabrownbear-av says:

I’ve always enjoyed this show – not perfect by any means but reliable fun. And it is getting to end on its own terms at what seems to be a great stopping point.

Can somebody put together an edit that excises every scene with Demetri in it?

  • robgrizzly-av says:

Stingray is a Golden Globe winner now, so I hope they work that in
