Here’s an update following this last weekend’s Saturday Night Live: Colin Jost has become the longest serving host for the “Weekend Update.” After the Jason Sudeikis-hosted episode, he beat out the previous titleholder Seth Meyers.

Over the weekend SNL alum Sudeikis took a seat at the “Weekend Update” desk and reprised his devil character, taking the credit for all the climate change and global strife from the last few years. He’s been a busy guy for sure, but still had the time to take a jab at Jost for “baby trap[ping]” his wife, famous actor Scarlett Johansson.

Since taking his spot behind the iconic desk in 2014, Jost has hosted 155 “Weekend Update” segments. He first joined the sketch-comedy show in 2005 as a writer for Season 31 and he became a head writer for the show from 2012-2014. He then briefly stepped down as head writer to take the position of co-anchor for “Weekend Update” with Cecily Strong.

It wasn’t long until Michael Che joined him as his partner in news-related comedy. Che, with 147 episodes under his belt, will surpass Meyers as well by the season’s end. Jost will hold onto the title for a while unless Che continues to host after his eventual (?) departure.

“Weekend Update’s” origins go all the way back to 1975, when Chevy Chase became its first host. While many have come and gone as host of “Weekend Update,” some of those who helmed the desk for extended periods include the late Norm McDonald, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Jane Curtin, and Dennis Miller.

Meyers took on the role as co-host with Poehler in 2006, birthing the recurring bit “Really!?! With Seth And Amy.” Starting in 2008, he hosted the segment solo until his departure from SNL in 2014, racking up 154 episodes. Before Meyers, Fey held the title with 117 hosted “Weekend Updates.”

He also broke Colin Quinn’s Weekend Update sucking record.

Damn, Daniel! Remember “Damn, Daniel!”, everyone?I want to dislike Jost maybe because I’m envious of how that guy gets to, um, hug Johansson regularly, but I’ve grown to think he’s pretty funny and charming. Doesn’t hurt that he’s next to Che, who to me is the one who’s unfunny.

The best thing they do is read each others’ jokes, and Che’s are way better. I think they work really well as a team, but suck in their own. And Jost is only really good when he leans into his lame white guyness. When he tries to be clever it’s just not believable.

I might be one of the few people who enjoyed Quinn’s run behind the WU desk. He clearly understood he was wrong for the role but soldiered on regardless like a good team player, and that’s worth something.

I liked Colin too. He was unpretentious and a good scaling down of Update at a time when it had very much become a difficult beast by the end of Norm’s tenure. The best were his early episodes where they let him stand away from the desk and give his thoughts on an issue (usually the endless Lewinsky and Clinton saga). He was also fun with the correspondents.

I liked his first uodate with the dpeech about being the new waiter that replaced your favourite.

Why did Colin Quinn always sound like he was out of breath? I could never figure out what that was about.

I enjoyed Colin Quinn, even though Norm remains my favorite Update anchor. While I’d rank Quinn below Tina/Jimmy, Jane/Dan, Cecily Strong, and Kevin Nealon, he was still better than Charles Rocket, Dennis Miller, Seth Meyers, and Brad Hall. Jost is the most baffling choice as the Kirkland Signature Jimmy Fallon, bringing nothing while being as generic as possible.

Every time I see Colin Quinn, all I hear is an endless loop of “Eh, well, y’know…”

    • rogue-like-av says:

I’ll never understand Colin Quinn’s career. He went from hosting Remote Control on MTV to SNL…with like a five year break in between. And after SNL (which WU he took over from Norm) he got his own show on CC. Which wasn’t bad, but…eh. And now??

Congratulations to Colin Jost! Now that there are no more mountains left to climb at Weekend Update, Jost can retire in triumph. Soon. Please. For the love of God.

This story has the cadence of a joke but it’s 100% true:One time while crossing the street in New York I saw Colin Jost, but I later realized it might’ve just been a white guy.

I like Jost, even if he has the most punchable face from Staten Island.

  • fuddelmer-av says:

He also got ScarJo which far outweighs any other accomplishment.

I have various mixed-to-negative thoughts about Colin Jost and Michael Che as people, and as headwriters. I used to have a pretty negative view of their Update tenure, especially around 2016, 2017, as I felt that they and the show as a whole profited from Trump after helping to enable him. While that opinion has not changed, with more time, I’ve grown to appreciate them as anchors. They have a great rapport, one that they manage to make genuine, whether it is or not. They have managed to wade through three different Presidential administrations and very turbulent times with some wry observations and mostly funny jokes. Jost also excels at turning the jokes on himself, his career, his personal life, and the perceptions people have of him, in a way no other Update anchor ever has. This manages to deflate the ego trip that Update can and often does become with people like Dennis Miller or Tina Fey. I do think they have reached an endpoint, and probably could have left a few years ago, but overall, a strong tenure, one that manages to make 8 years feel like much less.

    • tvcr-av says:

Agreed. I came around to their work as a team as they became more comfortable riffing with each other. It’s like the teacher made two guys who don’t like each other work together, and they actually got a passing mark for once.

  • lordshetquaef1-av says:

Look, I hate Jost and Che as much as any god-fearing AV Club commenter. But I have this dumb friend who thinks they’re funny and enjoys the interplay between the two hosts. Can someone explain to me what is obviously not good about them, so that I can educate my moron friend?

An impressive feat to accomplish all while not being funny
