Comedy Central is giving David Spade a whole late-night TV show

Aux Features David Spade

The comedy world is still very committed to finding a winning televised vehicle for David Spade. And this year, Spade will be getting his own half-hour late night show to follow The Daily Show With Trevor Noah on Comedy Central. There is neither a title nor a solidified premiere date, but thanks to a recent press release from the cable network, we do know that the premise will not be driven by politics. With that bit of reprieve, let’s exhale as a group.

The idea is to mirror some of the success that Spade has cultivated with his popular Instagram account, which recently earned a shout-out on Netflix’s Grace And Frankie. As of now, the format will include a rotating round table of celebrity friends as they provide commentary on the latest pop-culture news, which can surely only yield good things.

In terms of newly developing projects, Spade’s is the only of its kind among a slate of scripted efforts set to premiere on the network. With Broad City coming to an end, the work of some of its alumni can be seen in How To Be A Couple from former writer Naomi Ekperigin and a series based on Samantha Irby’s book of essays Meaty, which will be executive produced by Abbi Jacobson.

Comedy Central also released a first look at the promising new Chicago-bred series South Side, about two friends who find themselves stalled at a local rental retail company after graduating community college. It drops this summer and will feature appearances from Lil Rel Howery, LisaRaye McCoy, and Kel Mitchell.

Bring back Showbiz Show with David Spade! I loved that show!

    • maebellelien-av says:

I remember liking it, but now the only thing I remember from it is that it introduced me to Tila Tequila a good year or so before I would have known of her otherwise. Fuck that show, is what I’m trying to say here.

  • talkdirtyharrytome-av says:

Oh, Spade, why did you put Farley in charge of the bees?

  • bmglmc-av says:

His career has been buoyed since last relevance through “his popular Instagram account”?? All respect to Mr Spade, but i was going to say that his last viable presidential impression was six full terms ago plus change, but that’s Dana Carvey. And i should call a Spade a spade.

So good luck little funny man

  • cail31-av says:

Didn’t Spade already have a show with CC a while back?

    • the-real-debassist-av says:

Yeah back in 2006 or so. I remember watching it when I was 13, and for what it’s worth, I remember liking it. But I was 13, so who knows.

      • jccalhoun-av says:

I was an adult and I remember liking The Showbiz Show with David Spade. I haven’t seen any clips from it since it went off the air but I am cautiously interested in this new show.

        • bcfred-av says:

As long as he can put his acerbic commentary to use without coming off as desperate, this has the potential to be good. I don’t think writers on other late night shows realize that with the daily political stuff they are all telling the same jokes, with minor fluctuations night to night based on the previous day’s news. I can barely watch any of them anymore, so this could be a pleasant change of pace.  There IS still a world to talk about outside politics.

    • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

      I’m sure I’d remember that

    NO DON’T PLEASE STOP

a snarky take on pop culture? where do they come up with these ideas?

  • canwithnoname-av says:

Calling it here: it will gradually morph into a Just Shoot Me! reboot, better than ever.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Has David Spade ever been accused of sexual impropriety? Because if not … well I’m at least a little nonplussed.

  • cyrusclops-av says:

    Yuck.

  • nit-sheriff-av says:

    Ugh…and I LIKE David Spade!

    • ellenwalrath-av says:

Same! I want him to be happy and successful and I want him to be professionally fulfilled but I don’t think this is the way for that to happen. No one wins here.

  • elvis316-av says:

I’m picturing Talk Soup meets Weekend Update meets Entertainment Tonight.

  • erikwrightisdead-av says:

    Mediocre white man fails up

    • tldmalingo-av says:

      When was that ever news?

    • VABlitz-av says:

For Spade it’s always been, “Road coattails of hilarious comedian to become a mediocre white man.” He’d be Rob Schneider if it weren’t for him. RIP Chris Farley

    • chickenroost-av says:

Nonsense. Comedy is more meritocratic than many industries; either enough people find you funny to consistently secure gigs/roles or not. You might not find Spade funny, but enough people disagree that he’s been successful in the industry since the 1980s. What’s more likely: a conspiracy to keep David Spade employed despite his mediocrity, or he gets sufficient ratings to merit another TV show? Get a grip.

  • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Can somebody just shoot me already?!

  • jonathanmichaels--disqus-av says:

He had two sitcoms make it into syndication, and people underestimate how much actors make off of those syndication bucks. The cast of Friends makes $20 million a year each off of the reruns. Now obviously Just Shoot Me and Rules of Engagement are light years away from Friends in terms of success, but he is still likely very financially secure. Also, his autobiography did very well, especially in audiobook form, it’s a really fun listen.Basically, the point is, let’s not act like Spade is desperately clinging to relevance, in terms of formal SNL cast members post show success, he’s done better than most.Besides, every job he gets is one Rob Schneider doesn’t.

    • waaaaaaaaaah-av says:

Three shows. Remember, they brought him onto the last season of that one sitcom with John Ritter and Katey Sagal after Ritter’s death.

      • tldmalingo-av says:

8 Simple Rules. It was pretty great.
        Or I was pretty drunk.
Yeah, now I think about it, I was definitely pretty drunk.
        Very drunk.
        Where am I again?

    • theprederick-av says:

Christ, I’d forgotten about RoE. That was a rare example of a show I thought was garbage, but have liked every single major actor on it in other roles. I remain amazed it was on for as long as it was (seven seasons, just hitting the 100-episode mark).

    • cuzned-av says:

I was with you until you pivoted to “he’s not desperately clinging to relevance” because (a) financial success is not the same as relevance, and (b) it’s been a really long time since Spadey stopped having any relevance to cling to.

    • erikwrightisdead-av says:

It’s also one that a better woman or comedian of color doesn’t get or a younger, better white male comic doesn’t get.

    • kag25-av says:

You made me IMDB his show, he has done a ton of shows. Rules of Engagement was my favorite, because he was a ass version of himself. I think they copied Barney from HIMYM from him.

  • kingkongbundythewrestler-av says:

I never thought 90s David Spade would end up looking like modern David Spade. Or who would have thought Johnny Depp would end up looking the way he does?

  • kaingerc-av says:

So Jordan Klepper is not good enough for a show but David Spade is?!I would make a “Stop trying to make David Spade happen…” image but it’s David Spade, so I don’t think it’s worth the effort.

    • ghostiet-av says:

Jordan Klepper already has another show premiering this year on Comedy Central, though. It’s called “Klepper” and it’s going to feature his bread and butter – vox populi ridiculous interviews. Which I am completely fine with, because The Opposition was basically a pleasant knock-off of the Colbert Report without too much edge. Maybe it needed a more caricatural character at its center.

  • cuzned-av says:

Yeah, we’ve seen that show – it was called Chelsea Lately. And even though it was hosted by a pretty lady, all of America eventually lost interest.David Spade is, to put it gently, not a pretty lady.

  • broark64-av says:

the strongest thing on his resume will probably be Emperor’s New Groove.

    • colflanders-av says:

say what you will about Spade, but that movie’s hilarious

      • broark64-av says:

oh no doubt. it’s easily the funniest thing Disney’s ever put out and it’s remarkable it came out as strong a movie as it did considering its production history. i’d even say it’s been one of the best uses of Spade’s talent

  • tokyodriftwood-av says:

Two Houses, both alike in Relevance…

  • disgracedformerlifeguard-av says:

Surprisingly, the David Spade episode of Norm MacDonald Has a Show made me begrudgingly realize David Spade might actually be a funny person. Actor David Spade = bad. Interview gues David Spade = Good?

  • kjordan3742-av says:

As long as he has a Farley on at some point.

  • Blaine-av says:

David Spade covering pop culture news? It sounds like CC is going for the deep cut and bringing back Hollywood Minute as a full series.https://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/weekend-update-segment—-hollywood-minute/n10543

  • the1969dodgechargerguy-av says:

I’d rather kill myself than watch anything with Spade in it.

  • kag25-av says:

He will be good, I really liked him on Rules of Engagement, which I think ended to early.
