Despite not being on James Gunn’s DC slate, Constantine 2 is still happening

Warner Bros. says the surprise sequel has not been exorcised just yet

When DC Studios co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their initial slate of DC comic book movies at the end of January (while throwing some unfair shade in the direction of the Arrowverse), they made it clear that existing projects like Joker: Folie À Deux and the continuation of Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe would still be happening, but that they would be “labeled clearly”as “Elseworlds” projects to set them apart from the rest of the inter-connected MCU-style thing they would be building. With the specificity in Gunn and Safran’s announcement, though, it was notable that another previously confirmed project—Keanu Reeves’ Constantine sequel—was completely absent.

But apparently that was just some kind of oversight, or a conscious omission due to the character’s tenuous connection to the superhero world, because Entertainment Weekly got confirmation from Warner Bros. that Constantine 2 is still on. So that’s cool. It’s good to know that the people running Warner Bros. these days aren’t a bunch of Matthew Perry-types with inexplicable axes to grind against Reeves (one of show biz’s most lovable figures). The Constantine sequel, which will be directed by Francis Lawrence (returning from the first movie), doesn’t seem to have made much progress, since it’s only been a few months, but Reeves is pretty busy making a bunch of John Wick movies. It’ll be a while before this happens anyway.

That all aside, the lack of information here does raise a curious point: Is Gunn and Safran’s DC Studios label also in charge of comic adaptations that fall under the Vertigo umbrella (like Constantine does, from its Hellblazer origins) or DC’s current Black Label branding? We ask because we’d really like to see an adaptation of The Nice House On The Lake, and we want to know who we should be addressing our letters to.

The Lake House is such an inferior remake of the Korean original (Il Mare). If the original doesn’t have the two leads meet properly until the very end, unless you are very skillful, don’t try to shoehorn an additional meeting in the middle of the film just because you think the two leads should have one because they’re famous.(They were not skillful.)

They are talking here about the recent comic book “The Nice House on the Lake” which is quite good, not the movie “The Lake House ” which is not

Multiverse cross-over with Matt Ryan please.

I saw the movie and I don’t get why its so popular. It’s decent but I don’t get how it got such a following. Reeves was fine nothing special. Peter Stormare was the best thing but he was only in the movie for like 5 minutes.

Gunn, there is still time to get Constantine into your Swamp Thing movie and vice-versa, do not deny the power of live-action Justice League Dark!

  • Mr-John-av says:

Honestly, as much as I love Reeves, I have zero to no interested in any live action Constantine that isn’t played by Matt Ryan.

I don’t get how he can nail a role so hard and then be so wasted. Damn you CW, Constantine wouldn’t have patience to keep dealing with any of the nonsense he had to go through after his show got cancelled.

I have a hard time getting excited for these new DC plans. live-action Damian Wayne Robin sounds awesome but like…. I just can’t really believe any of this until I see like casting or set pictures this just feels made up. How do you announce 5 films at the same time? What if they’re all box office failures? Then what happens? The fact that Constantine 2 is happening stinks of “Hollywood isn’t taking any of these announced plans seriously yet”.

If you don’t announce a slate of films, fans complain that you don’t have a plan. GunnSafran was in a damned-if-he-does, damned-if-he-doesn’t situation IMO.

I would argue that they are in more of a put up or shut up situation. Warner Bro’s DC movies reek of studio involvement and revisions. I think we fans need to see more than a plan. We need to see full creative control and with solid scripts make it all the way to the screen.

I think the skepticism comes from DC prematurly announcing things in the past that were never made or released. Wikipedia lists twelve DCEU films and seventeen cancelled or reworked ones. Compare that to Marvel where as far as I know just one announced movie got turned into a shitty TV show.

On one hand, Swamp Thing — which looks like it’s going to be in the DCU — was a Vertigo title, on the other hand, so was Sandman, which is continuing to do it’s own thing.

Recently re-watched Constantine. It really comes off like someone who looked at the pictures in the comic and never read or paid attention to any of the stories.  The guy writing the screenplay this time has a lot of hit and miss with his adaption stuff. (Titans but also co-created Strange New Worlds).
