When Seth Rogen is not at home honing his ceramic skills, he’s working on the film reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The actor and producer shared a scribbled note from Leonardo the turtle. On the page, he makes references to his fellow sewer-dwelling mutant brothers–Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello–and their journalist friend April O’Neil (Leo needs to apologize to her for something, tsk tsk). At the top of the page is the date August 11, 2023, which Rogen confirmed in a later tweet as the official release date for the reboot film.

Other details in the science class notes include Leonardo’s signature sword, surrounded by the words “loyalty” and “honor, indicative of Leo’s nature as the leader and eldest brother. Rogen also shared that the margin-filled notes resemble the notes he used to take.

The CG-animated film TMNT reboot is in production with Rogen and Nickelodeon, with Paramount handling the global distribution.

Rogen also says that the film will focus on the “teenage” part of the title, not giving into the current pressures to make a gritty, adult version of the crime-fighting, pizza-eating turtle teens.

“As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the ‘Teenage’ part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most,” Rogen told Collider last year. “And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping off point for the film.”

The heroes in a half-shell will make their next appearance in 2023, building upon the original release of the comic in 1984, and the animated series in the ‘90s. The upcoming film adds to the many TMNT reproductions such as the Michael Bay-produced 2012 reboot series and the 2014 film adaptation starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett.

I’d like to take a moment to note that, as TMNT movies go, the 2007 animated CG movie is actually pretty good, because a). the villain wasn’t Shredder for once, and b). Leonardo & Rafael finally threw down, and it was awesome.

The original TMNT movie was one of my favorite movies growing up and I think it largely still holds up.

It’s just so visually dark and grimey, in that uniquely late 80s/early 90s way. And, for a movie about teenage, mutant, ninja, turtles, way too grim and bleak.
I thought the second one did a far better job at being fun while keeping the same aesthetic. Plus it has David Warner, and the scene with him holding a Bart Simpson glass has been tattooed in my brain for some reason:

I honestly thought David Warner was passed. His role in Time Bandits is still incredible. He’s such an overlooked actor. Terry Gilliam needs to go back to the good stuff and put him in.

      Yeah, that movie rules.

turtle dick doodles all over Donatello’s journal.

Now I’m picturing a TMNT movie voiced by the cast of Freaks & Geeks.

      Okay but who plays who?

        • south-of-heaven-av says:

Seth has the right vibe for Michelangelo but his voice is too deep. I picture him as more of a Dave Franco type.Linda as April is perfect, however.

They could pitch it up a bit if necessary. Then again, you never know until you hear it. I thought the voice of Scrooge was too high and all the triplets’ voices were too low on the new DuckTales, but those ended up working out quite well over time.

Could be good, but without Jay Baruchel as Donatello, what would be the point?

  • labbla-av says:

    Sure why not.

It’d be kinda fun to see that version represented.Rogen, as always, is an idiot.

I’ve long since given up hope of any TMNT movie topping the 1990 original, but here’s hoping it’s as good as the Imagi movie or Turtles Forever.

  • lattethunder-av says:

You know, there’s a lot of people don’t realize that that was a comic book first.

  • cinecraf-av says:

I feel like each one of these reboots is calculated to personally troll me in light of my frequent calls for a Gargoyles revival.

  • coatituesday-av says:

All I want from a TMNT movie is a quick cameo from Skylar Gaernter.

      you’re easy to please

      • 555-2323-av says:

Well, yeah, ‘cause I’m not really a TMNT fan.  I don’t mind them at all; I think they’re fun.  I just want the Daredevil tie-in, as God intended.

I would imagine you would need to be high as a kite to write this so I would imagine you would need to be equally as high to watch this.Putting this on my calendar right now.

Can’t we just let these poor, ill-used reptiles fade away?

Just wanted to point out for those that haven’t seen it, the 2012 series that Nickelodeon did is actually really good. I think its 4 or 5 seasons. Worth checking out if you’re a TMNT fan that has the time. Perfect blend of enough stuff for the kiddos and enough easter eggs, callbacks, etc for older audiences. Although some stories actually get pretty dark, so maybe not appropriate for young kids.

    • lexaprofessional-av says:

Haven’t seen that yet, but sounds interesting! My fav recentish TMNT related thing was this short Jhonen Vasquez made for SDCC a few years ago… Wish they’d made more!

  • thekinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Their hands are disturbing. As are their thighs. Ok, pretty much the whole thing.

  • mikedubbzz-av says:

Holy balls, how many reboots does this series need?

  • pizzapartymadness-av says:

Who here listened to “We Need to Stop Talking about TMNT on CBB”?
