The Critics Choice Awards returned as an in-person affair on Sunday, celebrating the best in film and TV across two continents with a show that actually finished on time (stunning, we know). Hosts Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer anchored the star-studded event in Los Angeles, with additional winners accepting awards and delivering speeches out of a location in London.

Succession, Ted Lasso, and White Lotus each earned double wins in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories for drama, comedy, and limited series, respectively. On the film side, Power Of The Dog reset the Oscar race with four wins while Belfast had three to remain in the hunt for Best Picture honors at the Academy Awards later this month.

Despite a roomful of Hollywood A-listers, the ceremony was full of surprisingly relatable moments. Here are the highlights from the big night.

After winning Best Actor In A Film for his performance as Richard Williams, Will Smith thanked the first family of tennis directly: “I am here tonight with Venus and Serena, and their sister Isha. I really just want to say to all of you: Thank you for entrusting me with your story… You all define the American Dream. You represent the best of what we all hope this world and this country can be.” But when Smith got flagged that his speech was running long, he landed the perfect volley: “Oh, ‘please wrap up.’ Sorry. I think Best Actor should get a little more time. I’m just sayin’!”

To be fair, this isn’t exactly the first time someone made a scene while giving birth. HEYooo.;)

we’re really just going to ignore this, huh

Will Smith saying “I think I deserve more time than everyone else” definitely does perfectly embody both these kinds of awards shows, and him personally.

    It’s “Macfadyen”, not “Mcfadyen”.

Interesting that these highlights didn’t include cringiest moment of the night, when in her acceptance speech, Jane Campion said, “Venus and Serena, you’re marvels but you don’t have to compete against the men like I do.”https://twitter.com/Phil_Lewis_/status/1503206213579853826?s=20&t=7sgkeRCm8TaGXdQX9z24EQ

It was a harmless if not particularly funny joke. We don’t have to take everything so damn seriously.
The Williams sisters are amazing and Campion’s didn’t need to target them to make her point, but she’s not wrong about the challenges of competing against men.

It’s just so sad that she’s the only woman director to have to compete against the men :/

Yesterday I learned that Melanie Lynskey is married to Jason Ritter. I had no idea.

So AV Club is just going to ignore Jane Campion’s complete disrespect for Venus and Serena last night or whenever this celebrity gaggle-fest was? So, so gross. Shame on her.The way she just casually disrespected their amazing achievements in the face of total horseshit (and with such grace!) is despicable. And the crowd APPLAUDED her comments. SO gross when even the “woke” don’t get it. She’s already apologized of course, but we now how she feels. https://variety.com/2022/awards/awards/jane-campion-venus-serena-williams-critics-choice-awards-1235203938/#article-comments

Especially considering she had just called Sam Elliott a bitch for his comments about her film. “Sam was a dick to me, and now I’m going to pay it forward”. Maybe we just say thank you to my cast and crew, this project means so much to me and walk off the stage?  Everyone was with you Jane, til you had to stick your foot in your mouth. Or just stop with the awards ceremonies all together. No one watches them, no one cares.

I dunno…this seems like an overreaction to me. The quote on paper certainly looks terrible but in the context of her speech, it’s more of a bad joke that she put in to relate back to her earlier point about all of her competition being men. It also seemed like Serena enjoyed the joke and most of the backlash was from people online. And like you said, she apologized pretty soon after. So what is really the big hullabaloo here? Why are people not named Venus and Serena more vocal about how Venus and Serena have been offended or disrespected than they are? And why does it matter at all if an apology was issued shortly?IMO no one is perfect and making small mistakes or social faux pauxs are fine as long as they own up to their mistake later.

Whoopsie-doopsie, looks like they did address it, because of course they were going to, and may I welcome you to your first day at The AV Club. What shame you theoretically must have at this public faux pas.

I would have been surprised that Ray Romano is super hot with a beard, but we live in a post-reality era so whatever
