Society’s ongoing, and pernicious, efforts to make us take the concept of a Madame Web movie seriously have taken a sharp new turn this week, as Variety reports that star Dakota Johnson has been tapped to host an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live. Johnson will head up the January 27th installment of the long-running sketch series, just two weeks before the Valentine’s Day release of Web, the movie that dares to ask: What if there was a psychic superhero who could meet Spider-Man, someday (but probably won’t)?

This’ll be Johnson’s second crack at hosting the NBC comedy show, having previously taken the gig amidst Fifty Shades Of Grey fever back in 2015. (We gave her—if not the episode as a whole—a pretty good review, with reviewer Dennis Perkins praising her “winning gameness” for tackling the material tossed at her.) Johnson will be joined this time by musical guest Justin Timberlake, whose long history with the show includes music, hosting, and the odd cameo; Timberlake is reportedly gearing up for the release of his sixth studio album, as well as participating in the years-long project of determining if we even can, anymore, with Justin Timberlake at this point. (Also: His new Trolls movie, which is still hanging on in a few budget theaters around the country, while also preparing to destroy the minds of parents everywhere on home video/VOD.)

The Johnson/Timberlake collab will be the series’ second episode of 2024, following in the footsteps of Saltburn star Jacob Elordi (who, thanks to Euphoria, has a commonality with Johnson in the form of Madame Web’s Sydney Sweeney), with Mean Girls star Reneé Rapp handling musical duties on the January 20th installment. Saturday Night Live is currently working its way through its 49th season, the start of which was delayed by last summer’s strikes.

Jessica will be waiting in Justin’s dressing room, in case she needs to take her earrings off.

    Her?  Is she funny?

She’s done comedies before. I thought she was funny in How to be Single, and Bad Time at the El Royale wasn’t a comedy but it had comedic moments. She’s a pretty good actor. You can’t hold Fifty Shades against her.

      Let’s hope so…

“…as well as participating in the years-long project of determining if we even can, anymore, with Justin Timberlake at this point.”Well if it makes you feel any less pressure about the Timberlake conundrum, here’s a reminder that your influence over the zeitgeist is completely non-existent. In fact, there’s a very high probability that this site will end up going the way of Sports Illustrated and Pitchfork!

Don’t let him tackle your top, Johnson!

Only a program as crusty as SNL could get away with a Timberlake appearance this soon after Spears’ memoir.
