We don’t know much of what’s coming up in Wakanda, but we do know one thing: We’re thankfully getting more of Danai Gurira in the MCU. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed she’ll be returning to her role as Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther Disney+ spin-off series. She’ll also star in the movie’s sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, that’s set to come out on July 8, 2022.

This news came in a profile on Hollywood’s most powerful lawyers, where THR reported that her attorney Jamie Mandelbaum brokered a deal for her to appear in both projects. As for the Black Panther spin-off series, Disney+ hasn’t revealed any plot details yet.

Update: A previous version of this article stated that Gurira appeared as Okoye in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. We regret the error.

Uh, she for sure was not in Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

    • TheFilthyGoat-av says:

Yup, big bummer confusing her for Ayo, played by Florence Kasumba. She was more prominent in Captain America: Civil War.

“Gurira recently appeared as her Black Panther character in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that we’ll see more of Okoye.”Oh, that’s unfortunate.

“Gurira recently appeared as her Black Panther character in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier”Yikes. That was Florence Kasumba (playing her character Ayo from Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War), not Danai Gurira.

No, guys, she played Nick Fury. And she also used to host a show called The Oprah Winfrey Show.

    • jvbftw-av says:

Yeah.  Yikes is the correct response.

I was like Wut, wait how did I miss Danai Gurira in FatWS?

I’m glad I’m not the only one that noticed. I was confused for a second while trying to remember when she appeared in the show lol.

      • ethelred-av says:

Yep, did the same. I was like “I know Ayo was in the show… Did Okoye have a brief appearance at some point that I’m completely blanking on?”

        • yesidrivea240-av says:

They silently edited that out of the article too lol.

Good thing that whenever something is deleted from the internet, it’s gone forever.

The sad thing is that it really does seem a case of someone watching the show and assuming two Black women with similar character looks were just the same person.

          • ethelred-av says:

But the thing is… they really don’t look that similar, other than being black women with shaved heads. Their faces are totally different. It’s… something.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

Gurira recently appeared as her Black Panther character in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier(nervously tugs collar)

We go now live to AV Club’s interview with Sam Jackson:

  • nothem-av says:

    Isn’t the character named Tommy?

  • The_Tagger-av says:

Oooooooof. Not the correct black actress, Tatiana.

  • destron-combatman-av says:

She was also great in “GET OUT”, “US” and who could forget her breakout role in “TOO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! -JULIE NEWMAR”.

  • wisbyron-av says:

That was Ayo, a different character- and actress- from Danai Gurira. She appears in Civil War prominently in the scene where she tells Black Widow to “move or be moved”.

  • psychopirate-av says:

“Gurira recently appeared as her Black Panther character in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier” yo, um…that wasn’t her. (Obviously) different actress, (very obviously) different character.

Well rather than say the same (deserved) oof as everyone else, I’ll just good for Gurira, and that I’m hopeful that the Wakanda show has anything to do, since it sounds like it’s gonna be vignettes about the non-T’Challa people in Wakanda, which is sadly what the movie is going to be now too.

  • frenchtoast24-av says:

Straight up deleting ““Gurira recently appeared as her Black Panther character in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier” and not even posting a correction notice.  Classy stuff as always
