Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Daniels might be working on Jude Law’s Star Wars show

The series was reportedly filmed months ago, so this would be pre-Oscars Daniels

Fresh off of winning a bunch of Oscars, and probably with enough clout now to do whatever the heck they want, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—a.k.a. Everything Everywhere All At Once directing duo Daniels—are apparently doing a Star Wars show… though they may have actually done it already over the summer. That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, which corroborated a rumor from One Take News that says Daniels quietly directed at least one episode of the Jude Law-starring Star Wars series Skeleton Crew, which production started on over the summer and wrapped “in recent months” (meaning, if this is true, it would’ve been done long before Daniels received their Oscars crowns).

Skeleton Crew, which we last heard about nearly a year ago, comes from Jon Watts, the director behind the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy. It centers on a group of kids who get lost in the Star Wars galaxy and have to find their way home, and though we still don’t know who Jude Law would be playing, he’s probably not one of the kids (also, despite being about kids, the show is not explicitly for kids). THR also notes that it will take place in the New Republic era, which is post-Original Trilogy, though we don’t know if it will be closer to Mandalorian times or closer to Disney Sequel Trilogy times.

As for Daniels, their previous TV work includes Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::. Assuming this is all real, it will be an interesting win for Star Wars as a brand—not just because Daniels won all of those Oscars, but because they’re directors known for having some aesthetic panache. Star Wars could use a bit of that.

I’m glad this isn’t another “Hey a hot new director, let’s give them a Star War” article, but I’m not so sure about the relevance of “We think they might have already done a Star War.”

I’m confused as to where the bar for “relevance” is, but if “Star Wars” + “the most recent co-directors of the most celebrated movie at the Oscars that took place two weekends ago” doesn’t clear the bar… this is probably no longer the website for you.

Well, I love Daniels’ work and I quite like Star Wars, but I think it’s generally accepted that even distinctive and famous directors rarely show much panache in their work for hire TV episodes. I know Taika Waititi directed an episode of The Mandalorian, but I don’t remember which one, because it didn’t stand out as his. I don’t think a Daniels Star Wars episode will a Hutt twerking and then thrusting its ass straight through the floor into the downstairs apartment, but I could be wrong.
In any case, though, this isn’t really news because it’s not confirmed. The Gizmodo article about the same thing mentions that there’s a Star Wars event happening next month, during which this might be confirmed. Until then, it’s just a rumor, and while rumors sometimes make decent articles, this just feels very thin to me. It’s no worse than standard AV Club fare these days, though.

This feels like a moving goalpost…

Is the goal of a director in a tv series with multiple directors to stand out? Or is it to tell part of a story while advancing the whole?

I don’t think a Daniels Star Wars episode will a Hutt twerking and then thrusting its ass straight through the floor into the downstairs apartment, but I could be wrong.
Is this something you want from Star Wars? I… don’t want this from Star Wars, so I hope you’re right. I also don’t want The Daniels to become quirk-trick ponies. I hope that they’ll do a variety of things that enable them to do more things, and I hope that they’ll be judicious about when that involves twerking. But you took this into fantasy land about what they will/won’t do in an episode of television that they may or may not have already directed. Feels like a tangent.

You questioned the relevance of this. Now you’re questioning the sourcing? Or… whether it’s newsworthy because it’s based on a rumor…? I’m just not clear on where the bar is. We get pieces because someone has been confirmed as cast without knowing what role they’re going to be playing. That’s both confirmed AND typically filled with conjecture. Is it more or less relevant than who might have directed episodes of a show that we know almost nothing about? Where’s the bar?

Why would I bother moving the goalposts? It was a bit of throwaway snark that you for some reason took as an edict I was issuing. I wasn’t staking out some sort of argumentative claim, and I’m frankly bewildered that you have now twice responded vehemently debating a post that was 60% an excuse to use a very common Arrested Development joke. NB: I don’t actually want to see a Hutt twerking either.
I’ll make you a deal. You can just assume from now on that at least half of what I say in my posts in just light hearted banter, and I won’t make the mistake of pulling you out of the greys again, because yikes.

Why did you bother commenting in the first place?

That’s my fault… I didn’t realize that this was part of your SNL Writers Room reel. Carry on…

In case you were wondering with Nora from Queens episode they directed, it was the incredible “Grandma & Chill”, which featured Stephanie Hsu and Harry Shum Jr from EEAAO. Also Simu Liu!

It sounds like cross between Space Camp and Solar Babies.

It centers on a group of kids who get lost in the Star Wars galaxy and have to find their way homeWho in the world thought that a teenage lost in space would be a good idea? No thanks.

  • labbla-av says:

    Well that’s depressing

  • stevennorwood-av says:

“It centers on a group of kids-“ Ugh. For a franchise that churns out so many shows but whose only really creatively different and impressive entry was the more mature ANDOR, this immediately makes me think it will be More Of The Same.

This is the first I’ve heard of Jude Law’s Star Wars show, and I’m disappointed to learn that Jude Law’s Star Wars show is, in actuality, called “Skeleton Crew” and not “Jude Law’s Star Wars Show” as I had momentarily hoped.

  • Mr-John-av says:

Sounds like it’s a SW version of this

  • egerz-av says:

I’m confused about how the premise is going to work, because it’s pretty well established in the Star Wars universe that it takes about 12 hours to get from the galactic center to the Outer Rim. Mando now travels from one system to another in a ship without a bathroom. How are the kids going to be lost in space Star Trek Voyager style for more than an episode or two?

Unkown Regions or it could be like a lord of the flies situation where they arent necessarily too far from “civilization” but dont have much useful technology to get help

Maybe they’re emotionally lost. Perhaps we all are, in our own ways 🙁

it’s always sad when Disney snuffs out talented directors

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of unique artistic voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly homogenized. I fear something terrible has happened.

  • coolgameguy-av says:

Has Star Wars ever dealt with the dangers and complexities of space flight like Star Trek has? It is pretty regular business in Trek – molecular transporter failures, ship implosions, worm holes, zero G space walks, etc. I.E. even in the future, navigating outer space is HARD in the Trek world. I feel like in Star Wars, unless you are being shot at you are generally going to get wherever you need to go without any fuss or muss whatsoever. If you are stranded on or near a planet for whatever reason, it won’t be long until someone comes around and you can hitch a ride back to wherever you’re going.

  • weedlord420-av says:

Thank God, I wouldn’t want there to be a director in Hollywood who doesn’t do a fucking Star Wars at some point
